AIBU to go out to neighbour and ask them to stop?

So it’s 9.20am bank holiday Monday and a beautiful morning. DD playing on the patio and I’m just putting our baby down for nap 1.

For the last 30 minutes out neighbour has been cutting flags on and off. It’s the loudest most annoying noise I can imagine at this time on a Monday morning. We do have the windows open as it’s a lovely morning, but even closed we can hear it.

DH is cross too but thinks we shouldn’t say anything… he’s worried we will start an ongoing argument as a few weeks back, he was doing some more flag cutting at 8pm and woke both my kids up! I absolutely went out and told him to stop that time.

Would I be unreasonable to ask neighbour to stop now? I know we are up anyway with the kids, but it’s early right?

for reference, neighbours have been extensively renovating for 12 months and I think they’re desperate to finish their drive and be done with it all!

If everything stopped when someone whinged about a bit of noise we would all still be living in caves now 😉

DD playing with Lego - not making any noise to be fair.

but point taken! I would just never dream of doing something so loud so early on a bank holiday…. But hey that’s me.

No, I wouldn't either, nor would DP. But we'd maybe wait till 10am, and that would wake your baby up too presumably?

Your neighbour did at least wait till 9am, give or take a few minutes, so that shows some thought.

When shit like this happens I always tells myself, the sooner they get on with it the sooner it'll all be over and the sooner we'll get our peace and quiet back. We all need to do DIY and have building work done from time to time. Round here currently it's roofers. (The roofing repair noise isn't the problem - it's the screamy shouty roofers and their mega-loud radios.)

Unexpecteddrivinginstructor · 29/05/2023 09:56

Yes I would see it as a sign from the universe to bundle up the family and head out for the day in the hope that when you come home the grinding has finished.

Equalitea · 29/05/2023 09:56

Yabu. Perhaps they don’t like listening to DD on the piano but after 9 is really fair game for noise and I think a huge amount of people do diy on bank holiday weekends.

It's not early though 🤷‍♀️

9:20 isn’t early. 😂

What time would you find acceptable?

OP probably wouldn't find any time acceptable because there would be another reason such as:

  • Baby having a nap
  • Toddler having a nap
  • Hubby trying to WFH
  • It's a day ending in a 'Y'

OP, you say they're desperate to get their renovations finished? Leave them be then. Ffs.

I'm glad people have clarified that flags is flagstones, I couldn't work out how on earth cutting up flags, presumably with a large pair of scissors could possibly make enough noise to wake children up. That's without wondering why someone would want to cut up lots of flags, if they weren't on something like a protest.

That's exactly what I thought!

Ourshoddyhouse · 29/05/2023 09:59

I want to live in a world where 0900 is considered early 😫

Rewis · 29/05/2023 10:01

I imagine that he had tons of flag poles and he was just happily cutting flags of the world.

Anyway, making noise at 9.20am is very annoying and if it was my neighbour I'd curse them out in my head. I'd prefere nobody left their house before 11am. But can't really complain. One of those things that you have to accept livign in a place with humans.

Arewehumanorarewecupboards · 29/05/2023 10:01

I thought cutting fabric to make flags too.

Fiddlerdragon · 29/05/2023 10:01

Yabu. It’s a perfectly reasonable time to be working. The world doesn’t stop because you find noises annoying. I’m sure he doesn’t want to spend his bank holiday having to do work. Stuff needs to get done though

peacelemon · 29/05/2023 10:01

920 is fine. You're outside with your kid so making noise yourself

Fillyfrog · 29/05/2023 10:01

It's an awful noise but when do you want them to do it? Is there a specified time? They need to do it at some point. Hopefully they can just get it done and over with then it's finished for the rest of the nice weather.

Yeah sorry unreasonable. They probably wont stop even if you ask them, they want to crack on with the work thats fair enough.

But it’s not early!! And what difference does it make that it’s a bank holiday?

HelpMeGetThrough · 29/05/2023 10:04

You could ask them, but they'd probably laugh. They aren't doing anything wrong.

CC4712 · 29/05/2023 10:05

I was hoping for a picture of the reams of bunting flags this guy is making! 😂

We have been renovating 2yrs and part of our planning permissions included this. Noise from demolition, construction works, deliveries and the movement of vehicles and other plant both on and off the site has the potential to cause disturbance to neighbouring residents, therefore cannot take place outside the following hours:

  • Monday to Fridays: 8am to 6pm
  • Saturdays: 8am to 1pm
  • Sundays and Public/Bank Holidays: No works of any kind permitted

I guess it depends whether his noise is part of a planning permission type construction, or a personal DIY type project? Annoying, yes, but 9:20 isn't that early IMO- and I HATE early morning noise.

Giraffe888 · 29/05/2023 10:05

I’m surprised you think 9:20 is early when you’ve got two young children, one of which is playing outside!

violetscarlet · 29/05/2023 10:05

I'd pop round and pleasantly ask how long they plan on the noise. If it's a couple of hours it's copeable. Unfortunately it's their right.
Just be nice and neighbourly when you pop around.

Bbqshowdownusa · 29/05/2023 10:08

Yabu and you were being unreasonable when it was 8pm.

ilovecherries · 29/05/2023 10:08

I don’t think there is anything you can do and you are certainly not unreasonable to FEEL the way you do. A few years back we had new neighbours who basically rebuilt their house from the outside in. They moved into a rental for the 15 months it took as they couldn’t stand the noise and dust after the first few weeks. Meanwhile we had to tolerate hammering, stone grinding, drains collapsing because of heavy vehicles on the drive, and one memorable week when workmen were constantly knocking on our door asking for water and our toilet because they had it switched off. (On that occasion I did lose it and starting shrieking about getting a sodding portaloo). We had brick dust all over our house if we as much as opened a window and our cars were always covered with it and workmen were always knocking asking me to ‘move them out of the way, love’. I worked from home (pre covid) and honestly it nearly broke me. I had to rent hot desk space elsewhere just to take client calls. Had we not had a dog who was used to me being at home I’d have moved out during the day. It completely ruined our quality of life and enjoyment of our own home for over a year. But there is nothing you can do. And after that rant, I’m clearly still traumatised 7 years on 😂.

goingtotown · 29/05/2023 10:08

Flags...paving stones.

ElsieMc · 29/05/2023 10:10

So annoying op when you look forward to a rare sunny bank holiday and this noise starts particularly when you have listened to 12 months of works. Our neighbours let out the house next door and they think nothing of starting renovations between tenants at 6 am or even earlier. This is then followed by her power washing obsessively all day. I want to scream and I guess this is where you are at. My sympathies are with you even though I guess 9.20 is not too early but it is the noise isn't it.

I wouldnt mind if our neighbours were reasonable at other times, but no. I should have pulled on my big girl pants years ago because if you give her an inch, she takes a mile but she has recently had a bit of a shock with us...

Blossomtoes · 29/05/2023 10:11

Sigmama · 29/05/2023 09:51

Massively unreasonable, why can't they do it on a weekday when not so many people are out trying to enjoy their gardens

Perhaps because they’re at work then. 🙄

Ourladycheesusedatum · 29/05/2023 10:13

I feel for you, it's a horrible noise. I've currently got a neighbour a few doors down digging their entire front and side drive With a mini digger. Its terrible noise.

But I've been the one who needed work doing and my poor neighbours had to put up with so much. My work took a year, I think your next doors will take considerably less time than a year.
At least it will end and you say your not far from a lake. Go enjoy a lake day.
