I always try to make beds, bins emptied, Bleach in loo after last person has used it, house spotlessly tidy, washing up to date so machine is free for holiday laundry when we get back, heating timer off, bleach in sink, fridge emptied of anything that will go off while away, Food delivery booked for the next day

Surely this is normal. Spotless, bins emptied, bleach in loo.

Theoldwoman · 21/05/2023 13:44

I’m going away tomorrow actually.
All laundry is done .
Bathroom scrubbed.
Floors vacuumed and mopped.
Dishes done.
Kitchen cleaned.
Bins emptied.
Beds made.
Plants watered.
Everything put away.
Fridge cleaned out.

I need to come home to a spotless home.

InBeautifulKindWays · 21/05/2023 13:45

I leave it fairly tidy, but our cleaner comes in whilst we’re away and makes it lovely to come home to.

Socksforall · 21/05/2023 15:29

I leave our house spotless. We have cats so someone will be coming in to the house while we are away. I‘d hate for it to be a tip.

Last summer my neighbour went on holiday. She couldn’t find something important and asked me to look in all their bedrooms for it (she told me where they hide their spare key!!). I was surprised to see a relatively tidy house but beds unmade. I hated myself for feeling judgmental about it!

reluctantbrit · 21/05/2023 16:56

I would say somewhere in the middle.

We often leave at the crack of dawn, no time to hoover, bleach the loo or change bedding. The cleaner comes normally and is again coming when we are back, so the house is reasonable clean.

Bins are emptyied the night before, a small bin bag for last minute stuff goes out on the day.

Dishwasher runs also the night before, a mug/plate/knife is washed up after use.

All plugs are turned off, windows locked, heating set on holiday mode if it is on.

Fridge is sorted the day before of anything which can go off.

Everything in OP but I don't change the beds - they'll have 2 weeks of dust on them so I wouldn't consider it 'fresh' at all. I usually fall into bed on the first day back exhausted, so I wait until next day, strip all beds and have a shower and then get I to fresh sheets. I always get a sc place with a washing machine when in holiday, so I don't bring a lot of washing back anyway.
Laughing at the thought of burglars peering into windows and equating clean houses with people away on holiday!

Precipice · 21/05/2023 17:15

Not particularly.

If it's just been dusted and cleaned before leaving, it won't be like that when I return, so cleaning right before going away is a waste. If by making the beds, you mean changing the bedding, I don't do that: they won't be nice and fresh upon my return either.

BooksAndHooks · 21/05/2023 17:16

It’s the only time every room is spotless at the same time. I do the biggest deep clean of the year in the week leading up to holiday.

BriarHare · 21/05/2023 17:19

We leave everything spotless. Like others have said, it’s so nice to walk into a perfect house on our return.

We also order an online shop and a flower delivery for the day we get home.

starfishmummy · 21/05/2023 17:41

Never as tidy as I would like. Which is pretty much how it looks all the time!

Time always runs away with us. Dishes will be done, fridge cleared if stuff thst wont keep until we get back, bins emptied etc but that last tidy up and clean rarely happens.

This is what I have found hardest about having adult children no longer coming on holiday with us. I like to leave the house spotless, freshly made beds, loos bleached, fridge cleaned out etc.

Now I return and feel the need to deep clean 😞.

I once came home from hols when my adult DC had stayed home. The kitchen floor was actually sticky. Yuk. So glad they've all got their own homes now

reluctantbrit · 21/05/2023 20:50

Can I ask, who of you who clean thoroughly before a holiday work until the day before???

I normally work until Thursday evening and I am not home unitl 6.30pm and on Friday I just want to pack and do the last minute stuff incl. dropping of pets, that does not include cleaning the house top to bottom.

I would be starting the holiday exhausted.

TropicalMoon · 21/05/2023 20:59

We always make sure it’s clean & tidy.
It’s just nice to come back to. I would feel abit rubbish knowing I was coming back to a messy house, pots in sink, abit smelly etc.

Fairislefandango · 21/05/2023 21:00

I'd clear the fridge, empty the bins and certainly wouldn't leave any washing up, but other than that I wouldn't clean specially just because I was going away. Why would you need your house to be any cleaner when you're not there, or specifically on the day you get back from a trip, than it would be on any other day?!

3 kids, 2 full time jobs and an old house. We leave it tidy but despite all efforts it's never as 100% spotless as ppl on here seem to manage. Impressed by those who manage it!

I clean as close to the trip as I can. Also make sure I put fresh sheets on bed too. I just hate walking in and seeing lots of work.

This year we're going away for two weeks and leaving adult kids home. Dreading it.

ohtowinthelottery · 21/05/2023 11:24

@AnotherDayAnotherUsernameForMe Same here. We've just got back from a week abroad but adult DS was still at home. Although he'd left the kitchen reasonably tidy watered my plants and put the wheely bin out on time as requested, he definitely hadn't wiped down the hob, run the hoover round or cleaned the bathroom.

@ohtowinthelottery thats like our DC too. I am genuinely considering booking a one off clean for the day we are travelling home 🫣.

SmallElephants · 23/05/2023 09:28

Our house looks like it’s been broken into and tbroughly ransacked when we are away. I work full time right up until we leave to get max time away. Always super stressed and a mad scramble to finish packing. Then back and straight back to work. It’s a bit rubbish. But the time away is magical.

GeraltsBathtub · 23/05/2023 09:57

Cleanish and tidy ish but it wouldn’t occur to me to clean specially just because we’re going on holiday, other than running down the contents of the fridge and making sure all the dishes are done. It will get dusty while we’re away anyway! And bleach has no place in my house.

AlltheFs · 23/05/2023 10:00

We definitely don’t clean before we go, but we don’t do much cleaning as a rule anyway!

We empty bins and fridge, we leave the kitchen sides clean and dishwasher empty etc. We have enough bother with mice that we leave nothing to encourage the little
sods. Or flies. But no hoovering or anything like that.

I do try to have all the laundry up
to date too. But that’s it. Low standards here lol.

CMOTDibbler · 23/05/2023 10:01

I couldn't deal with having to leave the house spotless before I went away. Whats the point of all that extra stress? Washing up done I understand obv for hygiene, but anything else just seems martyrish

What I would like & what happens can be two different things💁🏻‍♀️

However, fridge is always emptied of anything that would go off (delivered to neighbour who is always happy to use it)

bins emptied.

loo cleaned (& yes bleach down it).

windows locked.
