Copenhagen with young teens

We are going to Copenhagen with 13 and 12 year old boys in May. We have Tivoli and a boat tour on the list but is there anywhere else we should DEFINITELY visit? We will get the Copenhagen card so anything that is included with that would be great. Does anyone have a recommendation? Also I know it’s expensive to eat out but we’d like to have a meal out once a day. Any top tips? Thank you x

@Havanananana oh ok! They’ve outgrown science centres here (well, the Winchester one which is near us) - is this good for older kids?

Hmm Experimentarium is way bigger and varied than Winchester but I may be biased as I didn’t like Winchester and it was full of miserable people when I went 😄 we went to Copenhagen at Christmas and they had a cool Pixar exhibit (the making of/behind the scenes etc) so that might be good for kids your ages (our are 7 and under)

Bobbybobbins · 30/04/2023 16:30

The museum about World War Two in Denmark was really interesting and we enjoyed the modern art museum too. We also took the train to Sweden and enjoyed a day there.

MyFaceIsAnAONB · 30/04/2023 16:32

Oh yeah train to Sweden looks soooo cool, you pop up from the sea onto an island or something. Lots of people on the plane were going on to Sweden.

GOD I love that area of the world. Jealous op!

Haveallthesongsbeenwritten · 30/04/2023 16:32

Yes do take the train to Malmo in Sweden, its very lovely to visit. Went few years ago in Copenhagen and it was expensive unfortunately but we had a great time.

lifeturnsonadime · 30/04/2023 16:38

Definitely Definitely Tivoli Gardens. Amazing place.

Just seen you have it on your list!

Enjoy!

Havanananana · 30/04/2023 16:40

If you do want a day trip to Sweden, which is easy to do on the train, then consider going a bit further to Lund rather than Malmo. Lund is a bit more laid back and prettier.

Tottybotty · 30/04/2023 16:45

We only have 4 nights so I think we’ll stick to Copenhagen even though I’d love to see Sweden at one point. I’ve looked at the science place and it looks fab, particularly if we don’t have good weather. I love just walking round a new city stopping for snacks and drinks every few hours but we’ll need more entertainment for the boys! Will
look at your recommendations too @Bobbybobbins !

Thanks all!

Copenhagen to malmo is only 40 minutes by train so you could just spend an afternoon wondering around!

timetochangethename · 30/04/2023 16:48

Copenhagen is very small, personally I'd definitely do a day trip elsewhere too.

Havanananana · 30/04/2023 16:55

Another day trip from Copenhagen - only 20 minutes by train - is the Viking Longship museum at Roskilde. Not only are there 1000-year-old ships, but lots of activities and on certain days you can sail on the fjord in a replica boat.

Viking ships in Roskilde (vikingeskibsmuseet.dk)

Roskilde is nice for a quieter day. Copenhagen is nowhere near as busy as a city such as London, but like all capital cities, it can get crowded at certain times and in certain tourist places, so it can be nice to get out of the centre to somewhere a little less hectic.

Visit the museum

Home of five world famous Viking Ships. Follow the construction of a new viking ship at the Boatyard. In the Museum Harbour, you can see the large collection of Viking ships and Nordic boats.

Good comic and Lego shops in Copenhagen

Flowertight · 30/04/2023 16:58

Christiana is different, and easy to cycle to

Tottybotty · 30/04/2023 17:08

Ooh I’m excited! We booked so long ago and only really thinking about it now. I think my boys’ eyes would be on stalks in Christiana! Definitely going to visit the Lego store.

We had the Copenhagen card in February. The Zoo was great, pandas a massive draw for us. We also got the train (included in the card) to the coast to the Louisiana Art Museum, but there are castles and things up there which looked like they’d be fun.

tealgate · 30/04/2023 20:33

The Louisiana Art Museum is excellent. Lots of very cool modern art and a nice train ride out there. The cafe was very chi chi and probably not for kids.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 30/04/2023 20:34

On iplayer, Sara Pasco visits Copenhagen to try out some dying off industries. It totally made us want to visit. I'd recommend a watch with your kids. They may see something they fancy.

Her show is called "last woman on earth" and its series 2 episode 2 if I recall.

Tottybotty · 01/05/2023 12:47

@BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz will definitely watch before we go! We watched the Travel Man episode on Copenhagen last night. :)

I thought the cafe at Louisiana Gallery was your perfectly normal gallery cafe. Suitable for anyone.

AvonCallingBarksdale · 01/05/2023 14:34

We went when the DC were 10 and 12 and we all loved it. Tivoli is fab and we enjoyed wandering around. Nyhavn was fun and we did a boat trip from there. Louisiana Art Gallery was great too. We were going on to Sweden anyway, but would recommend just taking the train over the bridge to Malmo - it’s a pretty cool bridge!

lljkk · 01/05/2023 15:03

I failed to get my 14yo DS to go with me last year, so here's the stuff I wanted to do:

Hire town bikes & explore the entire city & bridges
(rental) Kayak around the canals & to edge of sea
Hire proper gravel bikes, and tear off to the woods north of the city, 50 km minimum
Skating (bring our own, maybe you can hire), they have a big city skate one Friday night each month, summer evenings, weather permitting
Walking around ,too
Cakes, cakes, and more cakes

Mrsjrewing3 · 01/05/2023 15:27

We went for 3 nights over Easter with our 8 year old son. An amazing city! Agree with all the recommendations so far but would also add the Museum of Danish Resistance (included with Copenhagen Card). We did not leave Copenhagen itself as we found there was so much to do.

Seconded! It’s a great day out. If you buy a Copenhagen card for your stay in CPH, it covers the train ride out to Roskilde, entry to the Viking ship museum and also entry to Roskilde cathedral, where most of the Danish royals are interred (worth a visit). You need to pay extra for the row out onto the fjord and book as soon as you get there as the sailings fill up. My kids loved the sailing.

There’s a big slide from 2nd floor to the basement at the Danish Architecture Centre, plus a room with loads of Lego. Even the grown-ups in our party had a go on the slide. 😄
