Will Pompeii be far to hot to visit in June

Anyone been to Pompeii in June? Is it insanely hot to think of visiting it then? Also looking for hotel recommendations in Sorrento if possible. Thanks

Could be because the weather is now unpredictable! 38 degrees in Spain right now. Early June should be ok. I remember roasting in early July! Unfortunately there is little shade. It’s mostly ruins and streets so be prepared. Personally, I would not. It is quite a lot of walking but if you cannot go at another time, do it.

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 30/04/2023 13:31

We went in July - it was vv hot. We had a private guide though who was very helpful in finding us a shady spot every now and again. Water, fans, hats were all required. It was amazing to visit though. Can't help with hotels as we stayed in Naples and Ischia.

FrownedUpon · 30/04/2023 13:36

Depends on your ability to tolerate heat. We went in August. It was hot, but we still enjoyed it.

TodaysFishIsTroutALaCreme · 30/04/2023 13:41

Not as hot as it was in 79AD

LIZS · 30/04/2023 13:45

We did it in June. Go early or later in the day, wear hats and take water.

I went very early October a few years back. We went in the morning and had umbrellas and it was stil in the 30s temp wise by the afternoon.

It’s a huge site and we couldn’t cover as much as we would have liked due to the heat/humidity.

Sorrento was a great base for exploring that area but it’s years since I went. Our hotel was slight up out the way and had a minibus service into town. Great views.

Or dusty!

ScarletWitchM · 30/04/2023 14:14

We went end August and it’s hot but not unbearable

Hohofortherobbers · 30/04/2023 14:15

Thanks for the responses, we're pretty good in the heat and pretty fit for the walking, just worried it'll be wasted trip if we're just skipping from shade to shade. Would anyone suggest Herculaneum over Pompeii as a site to visit, I hear its smaller.

Where in Spain is 38° today?

mrsnjw · 30/04/2023 14:35

We went in the middle of august (teacher) and it was very hot. Take a hat ! I remember there being absolutely no shade.

SummerLove2306 · 30/04/2023 14:43

Both times I have been have been July so too hot for Pompeii.

I recommend grand hotel vesuvio, it's a little bit out but they provide (or certainly did) a courtesy bus in and out of sorrento town.

CordyLines · 30/04/2023 14:45

Yesterday was quite hot in Southern Spain 33d but it's very pleasant today. Don't know where 38d came from!

Anyway each to their own but I personally can't walk to the shop 500 metres in high heat not to mind Trekking around Pompeii. You're all probably younger and fitter than me though.

And yes Herculaneum is to me, far better than Pompeii. Smaller but easier to get the context and not quite as busy as P.

flametrees · 30/04/2023 14:47

Yes I think so. No shade at all.

Roaring at this! 😂

LIZS · 30/04/2023 15:14

Herculaneum is smaller and better preserved. Some of the buildings have shade. However the scale of Pompeii is more impressive with more civic buildings to visit.

Foxymoxy68 · 30/04/2023 15:17

We went a few weeks ago and it's very exposed so a good hat and lots of sunscreen would be needed in June, I'd imagine. We also did Herculaneum
which I preferred. It's smaller and more interesting.
We stayed at the Hotel Bristol in Sorrento which was fabulous. The views were to die for and the service impeccable. A 10 minute walk into town. Highly recommend.

Yellowdays · 30/04/2023 15:21

I found it too hot the last week of may.

I prefer Herculaneum and have been 4 times. I’ve also been to Pompeii. The first time I did the whole day tour and it was grueling but each time I’ve gone back I’ve known exactly which bit I was going to and that was all I did. If you look at the official site you’ll get information on what’s being opened to the public and when so you really can just nip in for an hour so so to see a particular villa for eg. Also, the museum in Naples is excellent and home to much of the artifacts found in Pompeii.

Startuplife · 30/04/2023 15:34

We’re going in July on our way to Sorrento from Naples. I think our flight lands into Naples at 8am so hoping to be there early and leave before it gets super hot. Neither of us are hugely into history so don’t plan to spend all day there.

Stevie77 · 30/04/2023 15:42

It's been a few years since we've been there but it was pretty unbearable in May.

Also, I hate to say it but we were pretty underwhelmed. It's boring. Many of the items are on loan in various museums worldwide. And we like history. I get it's a must, and if you're there... but honestly, you won't miss out on anything if you don't go.

notaswearwolf · 30/04/2023 15:44

We went in August and it was boiling but there is lots of shade and places to buy water there. I'd really recommend getting a guide as we got so much from it. I loved it there.

Can recommend Hotel Capodimonte in Sorrento. Get the early train from Sorrento to Pompeii and get in as it opens before the crowds and the midday heat. Only costs a few euro and definitely cheaper and easier tha organised trips with reps

I second the Hotel Capodimonte. We stayed there on our honeymoon .We did an organised trip to Pompeii and Vesuvius and got a train ourselves to Herculaneum.Capri is also worth a visit .We went in July and it was very hot. Just remember to take a bottle of water and wear a wide brimmed hat.
