Will Pompeii be far to hot to visit in June

Anyone been to Pompeii in June? Is it insanely hot to think of visiting it then? Also looking for hotel recommendations in Sorrento if possible. Thanks

Would people advise staying in Sorrento over Naples?

Mummyof287 · 30/04/2023 16:27

I went in July aged 13 in 2001....I can still remember hating it as it was absolutely stifling hot, I got heat exhaustion and a massive headache.

I drunk all my drink and there was nowhere to buy water inside the place, and like others have said no shade!

I'm not good in the heat though...if you are maybe you might find it easier.

Place marking for trip advice as we are going to Sorrento in June too.

Sixmonthson · 30/04/2023 16:41

We went and stayed overnight in Pompeii as part of a longer holiday in Italy - it meant we were able to see the site without many tourists about late afternoon and early morning when it wasn’t so hot. It was actually a really good call - the locals were very friendly and we found a lovely place to have dinner that wasn’t at all touristy.

Definitely unless you are close to the museum and like hot cities. Sorrento is a busy resort though, spread out along the coast. The centre is very touristy, tacky some might suggest, but a good base from which to explore. Try to book a hotel on a bus route or with shuttle to the Grande marina(boats to Capri et al) and station for Pompeii Scavi and Erculano, as it can be a trek otherwise. Some hotels are on the hill behind or elevated just out of town and have a panoramic view.

Went to Pompeii and Herculaneum (and up Vesuvius) in early July a few years ago. Was v hot, obviously, but we were well prepared and suitability dressed so it was absolutely fine (and a wonderful experience). Have stayed in Naples and Sorrento, and loved both.

DramaAlpaca · 30/04/2023 16:47

We went at the end of May one year and it was freezing!

bigTillyMint · 30/04/2023 16:48

We have just come back from Naples/Sorrento and visited Pompeii. It was fine in April, but I imagine not much shade in the heat. Enormous site, lots to see - you would be there 3hrs at least.
Naples is a busy, working city. Poor and not pretty, but vibrant and football/Maradonna-mad! Sorrento is a beautiful town with gorgeous hotels and thousands of tourists.

RoseThornside · 30/04/2023 16:51

We went in August, before lockdown, and it was very hot. I'd be happy to go in June though. Take sunhats. We stayed at the Hotel Conca Park. Loved it. We were half-board, but sometimes went out into town for coffee after dinner or just for a drink. Easy to walk into town, easy walk to the train station. Would love to go back.

sevenbyseven · 30/04/2023 16:53

I've been twice in August and while hot it didn't bother me. Depends how you are with heat obviously. I thought it was an incredible place and would love to go back.

We visited in July but had arranged a local guide who was also based in Sorrento. She met us at Sorrento station for an early train and we arrived at Pompeii as the gates opened c. 9am. We’d booked her for 2 hours and by 11am when we parted it was pretty damned hot, but the first couple of hours were OK.

We stayed here: https://www.rotasuites.com/en/ It was quite a few years ago but the suite was decent with good air con. The suites don’t have a pool but their sister hotel 5 mins walk round the corner does, as well as a lift down to a bathing platform with protected swimming area and small, stony beach below.

Naples is a shit hole. Antiche mura is fabulous.

OakleyStreetisnotinChelsea · 30/04/2023 17:05

@RomComPhooey how did you arrange your local guide?

We're going to Sorrento on October and planning on both Pompeii and Ercolano.

Dd also wants to climb Vesuvius and look at rocks. Would be amazing to find a suitable geology related info or guide or something.

You must have been same year as us. Walked to the top of Vesuvius where I saw SFA as was pissing down with rain and thick fog.
Pompeii however was pleasant and weather absolutely fine - defo not too hot. Best bit was the Pink Floyd expo.
Just don't stay at the Atlantic Palace - food was dire.
I liked Sorrento town. Naples was bonkers.

We went to both Herculaneum and Pompeii, really enjoyed both, though Herculaneum is smaller. We went in late May and it wasn't too bad. We stayed in Naples (occasionally a bit dodgy but the hotel was nice); the Naples archaeological museum is good - bits there from Pompeii and Herculaneum on about two of the floors (steer kids away from the Secret Room though, hehe).

We found some nice small independent pizza restaurants in Naples, and some good gelato places. Lots of stray dogs about though.

Also worth a visit in the area is Capri, where you can climb up to the ruins of Emperor Tiberius's villa. Pozzuoli, where there is a reasonably well-preserved Roman amphitheatre and some temple ruins. Near Pozzuoli is Solfatara, an active volcanic crater with parts you can walk around (caution and adherence to barriers is essential and the smell is a bit interesting). Cumae is also interesting. Stabiae might also be worth a visit (that was the third Roman town destroyed in the eruption), as is Boscoreale villa (North of Pompeii where some of the treasures are kept - the rather haunting preserved cast of the dog is there).

We also climbed up to the crater of Vesuvius (you can get a bus a lot of the way, though the climb at the end was a bit arduous). Not sure that's the wisest thing I've ever done but it was amazing and I'm glad I did it.

If you do decide to go, I hope you have a really enjoyable time. x

We went to Pompeii in the summer on a muggy overcast day and it was absolutely boiling and exhausting. We went on an organised trip with a brilliant guide who was so knowledgeable. Didn't have time to see everything and I'd love to go back but I'd go at a cooler time of year.

I found her on TripAdvisor. This is her website: http://www.luciapompeiiguide.com/?ui=desktop Our kids were in primary school at the time and she tailored our tour to pick out things that kept their interest. She’s not cheap but definitely worth the money & she can do Herculaneum tours too. If she offers to meet you at Sorrento station to travel to Pompeii, take her up on it - at least half the train ride was Roman history chat which added to our tour.

The other half was telling us where the locals eat in Sorrento - restaurants & gelato places. We saved a bomb in the second half of our stay.

OakleyStreetisnotinChelsea · 30/04/2023 18:17

Thank you that's brilliant. Shall definitely take a look.

I second the Hotel Capodimonte. We stayed there on our honeymoon .We did an organised trip to Pompeii and Vesuvius and got a train ourselves to Herculaneum.Capri is also worth a visit .We went in July and it was very hot. Just remember to take a bottle of water and wear a wide brimmed hat.

I'd third it too, excellent connected swimming pools, and the advice to catch the train to Pompeii early

RomComPhooey · 30/04/2023 18:25

I just searched on my old emails. We visited in 2013. I hope she’s still in business.

Cakey46 · 30/04/2023 18:25

We loved Sorrento as a base for Pompeii, Capri and Vesuvius and can recommend Hotel Capodimonte which is a short walk from the heart of Sorrento. We went in August which was almost unbearable in Pompeii - imagine June will be just about ok.

Any recommendations? I like to eat basic and local in unfussy restaurants , hate being ripped off in tourist traps.

We went in mid August a few years back. It was very hot but was okay in the morning. There are quite a few areas to find shade if you are finding it too hot
