UK beach resort with elderly parents

Has anyone got suggestions for weeks holiday in UK. We will be travelling by car with parents in their mid 80yrs. They are fairly fit and active but not too much walking.
Thinking of Devon or Somerset (Cornwall is too far).
Ideally luxury hotel on coastline in a pretty location with little streets easy to walk around. We will have days out but would like to be based where parents can go out for a walk about if they choose.
Dad likes the sea and mum likes to browse independent shops.
Any suggestions? Thanks.

southwold

If you can hire a beach hut even better

My MiL lives in Sidmouth. East Devon. Pretty town and beach, nice shops.

Figgygal · 23/04/2023 16:36

Was going to say sidmouth too or lyme regis?

PinkLemonadee · 23/04/2023 16:38

It'd be helpful to know where you're travelling from. Scarborough and Whitstable are both nice.

PermanentTemporary · 23/04/2023 16:40

Another vote for Sidmouth.

Woolacombe?

Padstow

Swanage

Thanks for suggestions so far. We're travelling from Hertfordshire. We think around 4 hours is doable in the car, with comfort stops along the way.

Cromer

saddilema · 23/04/2023 16:54

Just to say, we've done Norfolk loads so wanted somewhere different which is why I thought Devon as not been there before.

Lytham St Anne's. Its near Blackpool if the fancy a more adventurous day and also close enough to the lake District for a teip.

DancingWithTheMoonlitKnight · 23/04/2023 17:01

Cromer or Sheringham.

AnnaMagnani · 23/04/2023 17:02

Lots of seaside places in Devon are very hilly.

Maybe Salcombe?

RampantIvy · 23/04/2023 17:03

Padstow gets horribly crowded.

Sundaefraise · 23/04/2023 17:06

I know it’s not got a beach, but i feel like Dartmouth could be good for the other things you mentioned.

Paignton

Deal, nice little town, interesting history. Your mum will probably do the shops in one day but it is within easy reach of lots of other places like Sandwich, Canterbury,Dover, Whitstable, Ashford, Rye which all have shops, plus places to walk in various levels of difficulty.

viques · 23/04/2023 17:10

Sorry, Deal is not in Dorset!

Tiggy321 · 23/04/2023 17:11

I second Dartmouth. I go with my 80yr old mother. The Dart Marina Hotel is lovely - luxurious and fab views. Loads to do, ferry trips and short drive to beaches . Love it !

SMabbutt · 23/04/2023 17:14

How about Whitby? It's very picturesque and for a change of pace you could have trips in to the Yorkshire Moors.

rosie1959 · 23/04/2023 17:15

Dartmouth is lovely pretty little streets that are all on the flat. Does not have a beach but the setting on the river Dart is stunning. Plenty of beaches within a short drive.
Easy ferry crossing with access to Torbay
Loads to do in the immediate area
Has a hotel right on the river front The Dart Marina but be aware it is pricey

Sidmouth

raspberriesblueberries · 23/04/2023 17:23

Royal Victoria Hotel in Sidmouth. Old fashioned grand with most of the clients aged over 70. Indoor & outdoor pool which are rarely actually used, spa, croquet on the lawn, some sort of activity each day like a birds of prey display and something else in the evening (a dance or race night), nice food, tennis court which is also rarely used and minutes from the sea front & only a few more minutes from the shops which are a mix of places like Seasalt and independents. Even a proper old fashioned department store. You can either walk down the relatively steep drive to the sea front or there are shallow steps. The sea front is flat as is much of the town. Coastal footpath goes either way and is much more hilly.
There aren't that many good restaurants in town. Plenty of cafes and bakeries for lunch.
Easy reach of Exeter for a day out and possibly Lyme Regis too.
Massive bay windows in the lounge and lots of tables outside where you can just sit & watch the world go by.
