Last day in France tomorrow - what to buy at supermarket to bring home?!

Exactly that - I remember as a kid always wanting my parents to bring back the sirop stuff they have here in place of squash!

Obviously meat and cheeses are tricky but what stuff is better in France that I should get from the supermarket to bring home?!

Carambars

caffelattetogo · 12/04/2023 11:30

Wine, soap, toiletries generally.

FiveShelties · 12/04/2023 11:31

Red, white, rose and sparkling wine.

lifeturnsonadime · 12/04/2023 11:33

If you are in the car buy a cool bag and ice and bring back some cheeses!

I also go for things like mayonaise, ailioli, cornichons, jars of pate.

Wine if you drink it, especially the dry rose.

Bread to freeze, croissants, pain au chocolate, all freeze well.

I always wanted the notebooks they have that instead of being lined are in tiny squares.

Tinkeytonkoldfruit · 12/04/2023 11:37

Search up this title as there was a wonderful thread to this either last year or previous one and I got so many good ideas from it for our french hols last year.

Rhodia! Gorgeous, particularly if you use a fountain pen.

I always stop at the big Careforre in Calais before heading back. I buy salad dressings/ mayonnaise/ couscous stuff/ cheeses / bakery stuff/ have even brought home ready made meals for tea that night such their tomato farcee. Oh and the green beans as I love how thin they are. Wine and beer.
its one of favourite things to do - I need a trip soon as am out of all my favourite bits.

If you have kids then mine LOVES the DOP body washes. They have some amazing ones that are based on Harribo.

SheldontheWonderSchlong · 12/04/2023 12:07

Carrefour moustache 'MoustachAcid' jelly sweets - delicious!

FreddiesTeeth · 12/04/2023 12:08

Dry sparkling cider in bottles with corks. I can't get anything here that tastes as good.

Rayna37 · 12/04/2023 12:09

The rectangular dark green tins of ratatouille.

halfsiesonapotnoodle · 12/04/2023 12:09

Oh yes, Dop bodywash, amande is my favourite!

froomeonthebroom · 12/04/2023 12:11

Chips a l'ancienne saveur moutarde (mustard crisps). I always ask people to bring these back for me!

lemonsaretheonlyfruit · 12/04/2023 12:11

I used to love (and they still do them) a shower gel that comes in a cube shape but the edges are rounded off! Also yes to squared paper.

My other 2 things that I always bring back is some 'syrop' - essentially their cordials in the metal bottles.loads of great flavours. They do one flavour in my Sainos and a bottle costs a fiver!

I also love the almond scented washing up liquid. Mmmmm

Sh4rkAttack · 12/04/2023 12:11

Cassoulet.

Motheroftweenagers · 12/04/2023 12:12

Yes to Carambars, also Michoko

Changeau · 12/04/2023 12:13

Dop camomile shampoo
Melatonin
Wine
Cheese
Those lovely sugar flavoured but plain yogurts

Chocomel

Aren’t there new restrictions now since Brexit about what you’re allowed to “import”, especially with regards to food? Worth checking.
In the past, I’ve brought back croissants, apricot tartes, chestnut honey, rouille, fish soup in glasses… as well as various interesting wines and cidre.
Non-food items: I second checking out stationery if you like that sort of thing. Also graphic novels - there’s a real culture of bande dessinée and book shops will stock a beautiful, varied selection.

Kta7 · 12/04/2023 12:16

Anything savon de Marseille-scented (if you like the smell of it).

The petit Marseillais hand soaps etc (prob also their shower gels but I use soap bars) are nice.

Lifeinlists · 12/04/2023 12:27

Anything from the Petit Marseillais range as mentioned. Especially their liquid soaps and shower creme.
Russian Earl Grey Tea - can't get it in the UK but v tasty.
Mayonnaise - lots!
Large bags of Ducros herbes provencal, bay leaves etc. Fantastic value and products.
Haribo Orangina
Pans, everyday serving dishes, utensils etc etc
I love a French Hypermarché!

Oh I think I just gave you my wishlist so if you wouldn't mind picking them up for me...😄

newtb · 12/04/2023 12:46

Some of the Marseillais 'flavours' now contain SLS when they didn't used to.
Cheese - poivre d'âne, chaource, the Belin nibbles, smoked garlic in tresses of 1kg
Sauce rouille to have with soupe de poissons.
Cassoulet, confit de canard - dirt cheap in Lidl in tins with 5 legs.

Btw, would've thought that Auchan in St Martin de Boulogne or St Omer would be cheaper than Carrefour. Or an Intermarché.

Don't know about petrol, but for diesel it's worth filling up before the port.

I want to do the same in reverse, but can't bring Cheshire cheese into France.

FinanceLPlates · 12/04/2023 13:41

If - like me - you hate the fact that almost all fizzy drinks in the U.K. are now made with horrible sweeteners - you can get proper sugar original Orangina etc in France

MithrilCostsMore · 12/04/2023 13:43

orangina in glass bottles
