Where could I go with young adult dc for three nights? Somewhere easyish to get to, pretty(not a city), with hiking trails and that won't be boiling hot?

Ireland, Scandinavia?
Been to the Lakes and parts of Scotland a lot but still open to it.

Looking for specific ideas.

In the UK you could try Snowdonia - very pretty (although could throw it down). Betws-y-Coed is a great place to base yourself from - either camping, BnB or somewhere like Plas y Brenin outdoor centre which is fantastic. Further afield I’ve hiked in Spain in the Sierra Nevada around Mulhacen, which was beautiful and shouldn’t be too hot in June. Villages like Trevelez and Capileira are beautiful with amazing food (and the home of Serrano ham!) - you’d fly to Malaga.

Picos de Europa, flying into Santander or Bilbao.

West Coast of Ireland is beautiful but I wouldn't trust the weather in the UK even in June!

Lots of great walking in Northumberland, you could go for coastal or more inland. You could even walk the central section of Hadrian's Wall in 3 days (there are various ways to get back to base).

Fly to Salzburg and head for the lakes and mountains - e.g. Zell am See, Saalbach-Hinterglemm - about an hour away by train or bus. The cable cars will be open by early June and these are free to use in Saalbach if you stay in an approved B&B, apartment or hotel. There are miles and miles of hiking trails with stunning views, and mountain restaurants for when you need refreshment.

Salzburg itself is also beautiful and is far from being a big city - it is no bigger then Oxford or Cambridge and early June is a good time to visit before the summer crowds arrive.

Bavaria or The Black Forest

Trumporange · 07/04/2023 09:12

Some great ideas!

Cooler bits of Spain appeal as we can practice our language. Any specific hotels?

I am not a confident driver abroad so is it possible to get the train to these places from Santander/Malaga (unlikely I guess)?

Saalbach might be better if the other places aren't accessible by train.

I'll also look at Northumberland - beaches look very appealing.

If you do decide on Northumberland, lots of people here would be happy to help with specific advice. June is a great time for a boat trip to the Farne Islands to see the puffins, if you're at all into wildlife!

I think the Farne islands are closed to the public for now

They're closed for landings, but the boats will still be running trips around and between them (which is almost as spectacular!)

Norwegian fjords are magnificent (between Bergen and Alesund) though its seriously expensive for food / drink / accommodation. We had a car so not sure on train other than we went on Flam Railway. But it maybe doable by train, there's a famous Norway in a Nutshell one which includes train.

Or we just did Azores which was a 4 hour flight but like a giant botanical garden. Lots of areas suitable for hiking and hot springs as well plus dolphins etc. You could base yourself in Furnas (would need transfers to and from) and walk around there which has beautiful tropical gardens and hot springs and lakes / small mountains. Says high of 21C in June.

Within UK Isles of Scilly was lovely and can walk around all the islands with coastal walks and the botanical garden with red squirrels on Tresco. You can get there with train to Penzance then helicopter or there's the Skybus plane from Exeter / Lands End / Newquay or if you have an iron stomach there's the boat.

Silkierabbit · 07/04/2023 10:54

For puffins there's Skomer in Pembrokeshire and you can land on island and have 5 hours there but does get booked up.

PollyThePixie · 07/04/2023 10:56

The Bolzano region of Italy.

Missingthegore · 07/04/2023 11:01

The wild Atlantic Way in Ireland, you won't be able to do all of it but it is bloody beautiful.
Donegal is obviously the best bit but Conamara, Aran Islands, Mayo, the Burren are also stunning.
June is usually good (by Irish standards) weather. The rain is warm rather than cold :)

Look at Man at Seat 61 for ideas there’s some wonderful scenic railways. Germany/Austria are easy by train.

Sprig1 · 07/04/2023 11:12

Exmoor, Elan Valley, Northumberland?

flintyminty · 07/04/2023 11:17

The Channel Islands. Guernsey has beautiful coast path walking and lots of lovely beaches along the way. Weather should be ok in June.

PolkaDotMankini · 07/04/2023 11:51

Andorra, flying into Toulouse or Barcelona and renting a car. The mountain hikes are spectacular and very doable. There's more than enough to do: hiking, mountain biking, high ropes, canyoning and white water rafting just over the Spanish border in Sort. Hotel Roc in Soldeu does amazing food and can sort out bikes and day trips too.

Crete would be a brilliant location in spring and Autumn. Not for high summer.

Trumporange · 07/04/2023 13:58

Fabulous suggestions!

I was pondering Ireland already and we don't mind a bit of wild weather. In fact we prefer that to swelteringly hot.

I've been to the Channel Islands ages ago and loved it so will look at that again too.

The Isle of Man. Couple of hours on the boat and feels like a world away. Beautiful coastal paths, glens, mountains. Everything if you love the outdoors.

Second the above poster, great inspiration with every detail re train/public transport.
He always refers to Railbookers at the end of a section if you are not confident making up your own itinerary, obviously it comes at a price.
Someone else above referred to Norway in s Nutshell a4/5day trip by train which is mentioned on seat61.com. prices are heinous so maybe Northumberland is more realistic...love the sound of watching puffin landings (so long as they don't crash into rocks)
Happy travels & hiking

Definitely Bolzano and the Dolomites. Unbelievably beautiful area with hundreds of incredible walks, the refugios are amazing.
