Been to Barbados three times. It’s heaven on earth

Cuckoosheep · 11/03/2023 21:38

The Bahamas is absolutely beautiful. I've been to many of thr Caribbean islands and The Bahamas is easily my favourite. The beaches are gorgeous, the hotels are fantastic, it feels much safer tha many of the other islands. I really didn't like Jamaca or Barbados.

Portillo · 11/03/2023 21:39

Depends on the season?
When do you want to go?

Cuckoosheep · 11/03/2023 21:41

I liked Cuba too, loved Havana.

TizerorFizz · 11/03/2023 21:42

@alderedge
There are quite a lot of mainstream ideas in this thread but there’s much nicer places. Some islands are harder to reach so they retain a less built up feel. They also cost more. They are not full of drunk Brits and have a laid back vibe.

Going via a yacht or ferry makes a difference. So the BVIs are amazing. There are virtually uninhabited islands. Amazing beaches. Great bars and a fantastic choice of islands.

Then there’s the Grenadines. Similar beach vibe and beautiful. BequIa is a firm favourite. So look a bit further for something special. Branch out and get to several islands. More fun!

CanYouSayDicksickle · 11/03/2023 21:43

@CeeceeBloomingdale True. You don't get fun, soca music blasting from the bar and the life and soul personalities of the Bajan locals and staff. And yes the beaches were definitely better in Barbados, although Mauritius as a whole was beautiful.

@TwinsAndTiramisu I didn't get that vibe, although yes it wasn't as "real" and rustic as the Caribbean.

BIWI · 11/03/2023 21:44

It's fair to say that your choice of island will also be massively influenced by the money you have/want to spend!

poppettypop · 11/03/2023 21:45

Cuba is great for the experience and the history. The food and entertainment were mediocre at best. They also use cows and horses a lot to pull machinery which I found heart breaking.

Antigua is divine. Its a very poor island but the resorts do not reflect this which is quite sad as big corporates getting all the money. The beaches are perfect and the night life was great too. Shirley Heights is a good night out.

Barbados was my fave tbh . There is more to do there than Antigua . Exquisite beaches as lots of organised boat trips etc. Oistens was fantastic.

Crikeyalmighty · 11/03/2023 21:46

I didn't like Antigua much- lovely beaches but at the time we went (a week before that horrific murder of that couple) there were 'stop the rapist' banners everywhere. It felt pretty poor and I didn't like the hassle on the beaches either. I genuinely and honestly preferred Greece.

OnTheRunWithMannyMontana · 11/03/2023 21:48

Only been to the Caribbean once and that was our honeymoon in Aruba. I would recommend to anyone. It's so friendly and safe. Incredible beaches and such warm welcoming people.

Plus it outside of the hurricane belt.

Katjolo · 11/03/2023 21:50

Barbados, St Kitts, Dominica (not Dom Rep), St Vincent... all beautiful.

Surely2023IsTheYearForMyRainbowBaby · 11/03/2023 22:54

Grand Cayman closely followed by St Lucia

momager1 · 12/03/2023 01:15

I have been to jamaica x3... cuba x1 st marten and also barbados x1 I have been to dominican republic 55 times.. and I retired this month and LOVE the fact that we are Moving in 2 weeks to our very own home in Punta Cana

momager1 · 12/03/2023 01:24

I just left there today...after a week as i had to go down for a banking issue (they are very careful from money coming from another country.) seriously we love it so much. there is an amazing expat community..lots of canadians and brits. If you are looking at a mid priced resort and want adults only..could I suggest Luxury Bahia Principe Ambar. best bang for buck..unless you are rich and want to be in cap cana

MrsTerryPratchett · 12/03/2023 01:30

Corn islands. Then Guadeloupe, then Cuba.

TonysChoc · 12/03/2023 06:37

I prefer smaller islands so my vote would go for The Grenadines, BVIs or out islands in The Bahamas.
Bequia was mentioned, for me that’s the perfect Caribbean island.

cptartapp · 12/03/2023 06:54

Loved St Lucia but it can be very mountainous and I was terribly travel sick.
Preferred the Indian Ocean.

Finally a positive review on PC everyone dislikes it I wonder if they went a no of years ago.

I stayed at the Royalton in PC it was world class. I thought the same as you lots of Candians (real party upbeat people) they all made my holiday along with the people themselves I loved it in 2019.

nukuwafa · 12/03/2023 10:17

How long is too long for the Caribbean? What's an optimal length of time?

elm26 · 12/03/2023 10:39

Jamaica, I've been to 4 Caribbean islands and Jamaica is hands down my favourite.

We stayed at Couples Swept Away in Negril and it was paradise.

Jamaica is my favourite. So much to do, the music, the food, the culture and the people. Get out and travel, see the island. Truly beautiful and wonderful.

CanYouSayDicksickle · 11/03/2023 21:12

Antigua was probably my favourite. The west/south west beaches were just stunning and very quiet! All the beaches are public too.

Barbados - lovely island, small enough to drive around. Has the caves and the rum tour. West coast is best.

Dominican Republic - the worst island I've been to. Very big, didn't feel safe leaving the resort, those that did to do excursions said they were terrified. Might have changed since I went 10 years ago.

Dominican Republic is not an island. It is part of Hispaniola with Haiti being the other part.

I know what you mean. Compared to Britain where there are no murders, no random rapists, etc. You never hear of women being raped or murdered in Britain and certainly no horrific murders. I prefer Greece too, where there is none of that either.

Horrible poor Antigua. I wonder if they have vulnerable people so poor that they can’t afford to heat their homes and die as a result, homeless people, kids needing free school meals, etc.

AviMav · 12/03/2023 11:11

@Neverknowinglyunderbold I've just had a quick Google Dominican Republic is its own Island and gained its own independence.

I agree with you about your post abouve though there's always a nasty undertone I notice when certain people speak on various carribean Islands. You would think one knows that they are going to a 3rd world place before arriving. So offensive and to compare it to Greece its laughable.
