Disney or educational holiday

WWYD
Let me explain before the Disney naysayers arrive...
I went to Disney world as a dc and love it and have always wanted to return. But it's so expensive now it's unreal.
BUT I still want to go and experience it with my dc. Dh on the other hand thinks I'm being silly and would rather go somewhere 'educational' that dc will learn things and also be less 'tacky'

Dc is 9 and I feel like they'd probably enjoy DW more than an educational holiday but I do understand dh as if we put that money elsewhere we're looking at Galapagos or further afield elsewhere in the world and dh thinks this is so much better. I clearly fall under his version of tacky and still want to go to WDW...

Disney. And leave your DH at home.

rubyslippers · 08/03/2023 12:28

Think a trip to Galapagos is going to be pretty pricey!
what’s wrong with fun and Disney?! Yes it’s very expensive but so are educational / long haul experiences

sailyboat · 08/03/2023 12:28

Thanks @skippy67 this has been discussed too :-)

@rubyslippers we have the same budget for both but dh thinks it's better to put the budget on a more educational holiday as he feels it's 'wasted' on DW

Disney! Went as a child and seriously contemplating starting saving now to eventually take DC... It is crazy expensive

pawz · 08/03/2023 12:29

Oh 100% Disney! I loved it as a kid, and occasionally pop back when we go to Florida to universal.

"Educational" holidays sound a bit wanky from your DH if I'm honest, a holiday is a holiday! Time to spend as a family and enjoy yourselves - surely you can do what your DC will prefer (tacky or not 🙄).

What does he honestly think DC will gain from an educational holiday?

TheBirdintheCave · 08/03/2023 12:31

My parents were obsessed with Florida and Disney and we went religiously every two years from the time I was 11 til about 24 (though sometimes we used our Disney hotel points in another location. Once we did Vegas, Anaheim, San Diego and Hawaii, another time South Carolina and Georgia). I always enjoyed it and there's more to do in Orlando (and Florida in general) than just Disney anyway :)

Iwillhavethefullenglishplease · 08/03/2023 12:32

I'm bias because I lurve a good Disney holiday and even my gremlin of a 14 year old son ( who genuinely finds fault in everything) asks to go back, but why wouldn't you want to take your kids somewhere they can escape reality for a little bit? Have a little fun and relax. Even if it's not Disney, why do you have to have an educational holiday? Give them (and you) a break and unwind.

sailyboat · 08/03/2023 12:33

Oh I'm so pleased I posted this. This is exactly how I hoped the thread would go :-)
Dh thinks somewhere like Galapagos would be a better talking point for dc one day. You know for when they go to UN meetings about the environment or whatever. Or maybe he didn't actually say that but I didn't really listen to him properly when he was saying don't got to DW so I'm not really sure. Clearly I'm one sided about this situation.

Disney.

It’s overpriced and basically a giant, crowded shopping mall. But your DS will adore it and never forget it.

When he’s older he’ll want to go on the less tacky holidays so your DH can have his time to shine then.

princesssparklepants · 08/03/2023 12:34

Go to Disney!

Take them to the hall of presidents at magic kingdom and that's history covered

Epcot - living with the land and all the countries - geography

Sure there are plenty of other educational bits!

Targetbag · 08/03/2023 12:35

Disney is so much fun, go while your child will still appreciate it.

Nooyoiknooyoik · 08/03/2023 12:35

PS universal studios are better for the over 9s imo

sailyboat · 08/03/2023 12:35

@Nooyoiknooyoik shhhh I want to go to Disney!! I will probably pop over there one day as well though if we did go

While the price of Disney holidays shocks me, I think that age 9 is a great age to do it.

Is he just not a theme park kind of person ? The 2 holidays are so different - are there educational day trips that you could do while
out there ?

TheVanguardSix · 08/03/2023 12:36

Hang on…let me grab my Bitch Slap glove for you to borrow, OP. It will leave a slight mark on your DH’s cheek which should be totally gone by the time you reach Orlando.

AndAway · 08/03/2023 12:40

Disney!! 9 is the perfect age. Holidays are supposed to be about fun and spending time together. Not "talking points" for the future.

Besides, do a day at NASA, it's amazing.

Dudum · 08/03/2023 12:41

Combine WDW with a trip to the Deep South

derryrose1980 · 08/03/2023 12:44

Schools go on educational trips to Disney land Paris. The physics, mechanisms, and materials to create those rides is mind blowing. Set design etc. Think of as many educational aspects as possible to win him over. My own kids just rolled their eyes at me taking pictures of scientific concepts when I was there to bring back to my classroom.

NomadicSpirit · 08/03/2023 12:45

Disney. You'll learn more about the Galapagos Islands on Discovery Channel than you will going to a hunk of rock in the Pacific.

If he wants an educational holiday (and this is about him wanting it), then there's probably more history in the UK than you can ever absorb. After that, I'd recommend Rome as it's got an insane amount.

But yeah, your kid is 9, I know which I'd have preferred at that age and it wouldn't have been looking at similar looking lizards.

Oh yeah, Kennedy Space Centre is amazing :D My dad timed one of our holidays to coincide with a shuttle landing so we actually got to see one come down which was amazing.

We also went to St Petersburg on one trip and Miami on another. Reading this thread it bringing all of these cool memories back :D

Nearlyamumoftwo · 08/03/2023 12:48

Hi @sailyboat if you are considering Disney World Florida I expect the budgets are similar, but as your child is 9 I would say Disney. I see what your DH means - somewhere like the Galapagos is much more of a special treat and she’ll appreciate it when she’s older (probably more than Disney!) but she will love Disney more now. You don’t want to risk her being bored In the Galapagos - it will ruin the holiday for everyone.

If I have the budget when my kid is 9 years old, I’d probably go on a family friendly safari in South Africa. A 9 year old would (should!) love it!

elm26 · 08/03/2023 12:49

Disney!

I was fortunate enough to have family in Florida (still do) and have many happy memories of Disney.

They're only young once! X
