Disney or educational holiday

WWYD
Let me explain before the Disney naysayers arrive...
I went to Disney world as a dc and love it and have always wanted to return. But it's so expensive now it's unreal.
BUT I still want to go and experience it with my dc. Dh on the other hand thinks I'm being silly and would rather go somewhere 'educational' that dc will learn things and also be less 'tacky'

Dc is 9 and I feel like they'd probably enjoy DW more than an educational holiday but I do understand dh as if we put that money elsewhere we're looking at Galapagos or further afield elsewhere in the world and dh thinks this is so much better. I clearly fall under his version of tacky and still want to go to WDW...

At that age Disney.

DD is now 16 and we will do a more "educational" trip this year as we think she now has the interest and will appreciate it compared to being a pre-teen when everything was just about having fun.

Disney all day long!!! Make those amazing memories while they're at the perfect age

Hiya

Ultimately it has to be something you all want to do , especially if it’s a special trip. I think everywhere can be educational so I don’t think that’s an issue really.

I went to DW when I was 21 and had a great time but my husband hates theme parks. My d’s who is now 14 isn’t a big fan either. We went to California when he was 7 and had a day at Disneyland and that was enough for him. California is amazing if that’s an option, San Diego is fab, you could have a great road trip including whale watching, giant redwoods, san Francisco and even go to vegas if you wanted to.

We were talking about holidays with our son the other day and the ones he remembers are ones which were really different- Cambodia, visiting the Indiana Jones temple, and eating snake and tarantulas, Sri Lanka surfing, and a safari, Peru, with Machu pichu and the Amazon, a safari in South Africa and Canada skiing have been his favourites. You could fly to Calgary for example and go to dinosaur provincial park where there are massive dinosaur bones just sticking out of the ground, it’s incredible! Then either drive or fly to Vancouver and go to Vancouver island which is awesome.

we are planning a trip to the Galapagos because our son is really interested in becoming a marine biologist and is keen to go but it’s a long way and expensive holiday if everyone isn’t into it!

aorry I appreciate this is v long, but ultimately I think that you all need to be getting something out of a holiday and if Disney or the Galapagos don’t appeal then maybe you need to come up with a third option?

good luck!

My post wasn’t meant to be anything other than saying it depends on the person and family. Ultimately you need to do
what you all want to do and will get the
most out of, I was just trying to say that ‘educational’ trips don’t need to be boring, there are loads of exciting things you can do.

@Holidayqueen1 you reminded me about our RV road trip in the states when DS1 was 7 and really into dinosaurs. All the parks had age suitable schemes for kids. We came across a dinosaur tracks place between Grand Canyon and Monument Valley. At Mesa Verde the site we stayed at did tractor rides out to an area where you could dig for fossils and at Moab there was an amazing fossil shop. At Bryce Canyon DS2 (4) discovered his love of horse riding (do that turned out to be a bloody expensive trip🤣).

@Holidayqueen1 hope you don't think I was criticising, fascinating list of holidays! Just liked how your username linked up!

Galapagos sounds like a lot of time in small, fairly choppy boats and then doing hikes from the anecdotes of relatives that have gone. 9 may be a tad young to really get the most out of it. I’d do Disney if it’s the choice between the two- although would be helpful to know why you hated DLP as would be a shame if you had rose tinted specs about Florida and also then hated similar things.
