Do you know a nice city where there isn't very much to do?

Bit of an odd request I know! I want to go on a mini break next month, and I want to sit on my hotel balcony/in a cafe and read and chill. I would also like to walk down some pretty streets once in a while.
That's it!
The issue is that I wouldn't be able to relax enough to do this if I knew there were nice sites/sights/excursions/museums etc to explore, as I would definitely feel like I needed to see them.
So I need somewhere pleasant/pretty/friendly BUT boring!
Any ideas for destinations that would fit the bill?

Nice is really chilled and lovely .
The promenade and the Old Town are perfect for a wander .

Porto. Good for food and drink and just strolling around.

Also San Sebastián.

Hellocatshome · 06/03/2023 20:33

Gothenberg

Mahon or Ciutadella. I’m not sure how much will be open though.

Tavira (the Algave).
Denia (near Valencia).

Not cities, but nice sized towns for a break.

Riga.

Helsinki.

Lucca, beautiful but sleepy.

PinkPondQueen · 06/03/2023 20:41

Agree with ellaballoo, Nice was my first thought. A balcony right on the promenade would have a stunning view over the beach. Plus the airport could not be closer, so convenient.

Helsinki isn’t boring. But it is peaceful and the Finnish will leave you to get on with it.

Riga is very picturesque.

Porto. Good for food and drink and just strolling around.

Also San Sebastián.

I was also going to suggest these two. Plus Rapallo.

Why a city if you don't want exciting distractions? A coastal town with no museums etc might be easier to recommend.

Clusterfunk · 06/03/2023 20:45

Lucca. Perfect for this.

countdowntonap · 06/03/2023 20:46

Another vote for Mahon.
What about Funchal?

sevenbyseven · 06/03/2023 20:49

Nice fits the bill as long as you can ignore all the day trip possibilities along the coast.

Hobbesmanc · 06/03/2023 20:49

Syracuse or Taormina in Sicily are beautiful and atmospheric . Nerja in Andalusia is a perfect coastal town. Or Santander in Northern Spain. Bologna in Italy does have museums etc but it's not totally touristy like lots of Italian cities.

museumum · 06/03/2023 20:50

Cadiz is lovely but you can do “the sights” in an afternoon.

Twilightstarbright · 06/03/2023 20:59

Trieste.

Brussels. Added benefit of chocolate, Chips and waffles.

CharlotteDoyle · 06/03/2023 21:03

That's pretty much all I do in Florence. Obviously you can consume some culture too if you wish Smile

manictuesday · 06/03/2023 21:04

Bratislava comes to mind. Very compact and not a lot to do beyond wandering through the streets, up to the castle and back.

Crikeyalmighty · 06/03/2023 21:04

I think Palma and Malaga are good for this- and no transfers at the other end (well about 3 miles) both have lovely atmospheric old towns

IWasFunBeforeMum · 06/03/2023 21:04

Granada

Hotmess1 · 06/03/2023 21:05

Another vote for Porto - beautiful city where you can just sit and people watch, look at gorgeous old buildings but wouldn’t feel like you’re missing out on anything else!

ShandaLear · 06/03/2023 21:07

I’d probably just go to Winchester for a bit of a pootle, and save going abroad for when I wanted to do something.

Radiatorvalves · 06/03/2023 21:07

How are you getting there? And what time of year? What’s the preferred temperature?
