Has anyone ever visited this place?
How on earth do you get there from UK (north)
It looks beautiful!

Oh, we went on the ferry from somewhere down south (can’t remember that either) 😂

VivaVivaa · 25/02/2023 21:01

It is lovely and worth a visit but it will be extremely busy in July. We did it as part of a bigger holiday to Normandy, staying in Eurocamp resorts.

Tillytess · 25/02/2023 21:01

Beautiful and magical from a distance. Dirty, crowded and overpriced up close. Visited as part of a longer holiday, husband booked to stay one night in a hotel on the island as a surprise/treat. Big mistake. Hotel massively overpriced, filthy and unfriendly. Island consists of tat shops and mediocre yet eye wateringly expensive bars and restaurants.

Although this was 12 years ago now, so it may well not be as nice as I remember reading the other comments!

Nah bollocks

Just go to St Michaels Mount in Cornwall

Literally exactly the same with lovely pasties and restaurants in Marazion

MUCH quieter (I've been to both and St Michaels Mount is the only one I've been to a dozen times)

Yes I agree with this 100% having been to both

Here's the British version, St. Michael's Mount, off the coast of Marazion, Cornwall.

We stayed at a farm camping overlooking the bay and Mt ST Michel. It was fab. We had a guided tour around the bay when the tide went out.

Twilightstarbright · 25/02/2023 21:42

It’s fab but not in July.

there’s a famous restaurant at the foot of the mount that does soufflé omelettes cooked in a cauldron, well worth it!

Went about 20 years ago.. Awful pushing a pram up there!

Grinsame when we took DGson to Lindisfarne recently - pushing a pram up & around was very good exercise!

Flossflower · 25/02/2023 22:10

It is the most crowded place I have ever been to, including euro Disney on a weekend. It was awful

Wallywobbles · 25/02/2023 22:11

Either go early in the morning or in the evening in peak season. I've been the only non resident there on an icy day in January.

gizmo · 25/02/2023 22:14

We went in July this year. Late in the evening ( I think we went in around 5.30 as a special Son et Lumiere show they've got on this year). It was still busy but not heaving and watching the sun set from the Abbey was magical.

My suggestion would be don't try to eat there or go earlier...there are plenty of good places to eat in within a 30 minute drive (it's France after all!) but if you can avoid peak times it still has an amazing atmosphere.

AlloftheTime · 25/02/2023 23:14

It’s fab but went years ago so guessing it’s busier niw
Rff hie car got stuck in the car park and a French couple helped us push it out!

Forever42 · 26/02/2023 13:36

I've been in August and it was busy but not so much so that you couldn't enjoy it. We did it without kids so walked there and back over the causeway so no waiting for buses.

The area around is great to stay You can either do Normandy and the D-Day beaches if you go East, or St Malo/Dinan/Dinard if you go West. All beautiful and interesting.

ilovesushi · 26/02/2023 14:23

Definitely go out of season and go early in the day. I visited as a kid and it was magical. Went with DH and DC a few years ago in the summer holidays. It was absolutely torrential the whole day and cold but the place was rammed. It felt like you got on a conveyor belt at one end and kept going until you got off again. It is incredible but too many people for me to really enjoy.

Sunriseinwonderland · 26/02/2023 14:26

It's so lovely but it's absolutely crammed with people. I went with my cousin and we drove over.

TheProvincialLady · 26/02/2023 14:36

We went in July last year and it was very busy but I really enjoyed it. I would not wait for the buses but walk (45 mins or so each way). Don’t attempt to buy food in there, it’s awful and very expensive. St Michael’s Mount in Cornwall is also very nice but definitely not the same and not as magical in my opinion. Though walking across the causeway at low tide is great fun.

IDontWantToBeAPie · 26/02/2023 15:19

I mean you could also save money and go to St Michaels Mount in the South of the UK: same same but different.

SweetSakura · 26/02/2023 15:22

Despite the crowds we still really loved it! And if you want to see it when less busy it looks as though there are a few hotels on it so you could stay overnight and see it when quiet.

SweetSakura · 26/02/2023 15:23

(we went on a sunny winter day though, I imagine it might be even busier in the summer)

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 26/02/2023 15:24

I went years ago as a teenager. It was very nice, but as others have said, very touristy.

jollygoose · 26/02/2023 15:27

If you are spending a few days in the area do visit Dinan it is the most beautiful small town with a long windy cobbled street down hill - very like Shaftesbury Gold Hill but much longer with the River Rance at the bottom and the most fabulous honey cake shop.

Radiatorvalves · 26/02/2023 15:29

We went in November once. Beautiful and sunny but Baltic! Definitely worth a visit but I wouldn’t go in peak season. Ferry from Portsmouth to St malo (or another French port - Cherbourg/ Le Havre and a drive.

brittany and Normandy are lovely with lots to do.

NoraLuka · 26/02/2023 15:35

We went in February 2020 and I remember it was our last day out before Covid really got going. The wind was icy and the place was almost empty apart from a few school groups and coaches of tourists from various countries. Some of them wore masks and we wondered why on earth you’d do that 😁

I liked it but I think a day there is enough, I would include it as part of a holiday if you like the look of the area. Also not sure I would have liked it if it had been crowded and/or hot - the streets are narrow with steep stairs.

We brought a picnic so didn’t buy any food but it did look expensive.
