What’s a ‘liquid’?

Hi all, I’m flying from Manchester next month and only taking carry on. I usually book hold luggage, but not this time. I was wondering what is considered a liquid. Obviously things like moisturiser, shampoo etc. but what about things like lipsticks, cream eyeshadow and foundation sticks? They’re actually quite solid, but would they be considered liquids? I usually book hold luggage but can’t this time. Also, will my 7 year old be able to carry a liquids bag through too. Thanks everyone.

Ds is (hopefully) travelling to Canada out of Glasgow soon. He has ASD & is highly anxious. Can he take bar soap, bottle if shampoo & toothpaste for 2 weeks, as he'll struggle to buy them in Canada (poss even at airport). I've not travelled for 20 years (as you can tell)

You can take as many as you like in hold luggage. For hand luggage you can take your pick of what boots have after security and it doesn’t count towards your limits or alternatively do a click and collect order to the airport shop if he needs a certain type of product.

I travel for a living and have never ever needed items to be labelled. Ever.

You'll be fine so long as they're under 100ml. Interestingly if they're frozen they don't count towards your liquids!

The website is just being xtra thorough. I fly at least 12 times a year and have never ever needed bottles to be labelled - from Manchester, Leeds/Brad, Luton, Gatwick etc it's never happened.

If anything is taken you can buy it again at the Boots after security.

I was told years ago by someone in Glasgow airport that if it can melt, it's classed as a liquid. I always stick to this and have never had issues.

I see their point, but technically liquids can't melt, because they're already liquid!

I can buy some travel sizes, but I think they’re expensive for what they are and would prefer to take my usual stuff that I like. It’s also things like decanting moisturiser that’s a bit expensive so can’t just re-buy and foundation so I don’t need to take big bottles. If others travel from Manchester regularly and they’ve never needed labels it should be ok. The website is quite over the top though.

By 2024 in the UK we won't even need to take liquids out. They're getting new machines and a new system. Chill.

How do we think I’d get on with a stick deodorant? Not a roll on, be of those solid stick types? My mum took one through Liverpool airport no bother, but starting to think I wouldn’t get away with it at Manchester. Why are they so awkward compared compared to other airports.

My bag got stopped for a Dove stick deodorant.... At Manchester 😂

LivingOnAPrayerYes · 26/02/2023 21:28

Just looked and it is actually in ml on the deodorant!

Inhalers (despite being powder) are also considered liquids by Manchester. I think I managed to get away with solid shampoo but only by saying it was soap...

It’s the propellant in inhalers that is a liquid.

Prescription medications don’t count towards your allowance, you can put them in a second liquids bag along with a copy of the prescription or a letter from your doctor.

medianewbie · 26/02/2023 22:05

@NoDairyNoProblem Thank you that's very kind of you x

AuditAngel · 26/02/2023 22:25

I was just going to say DD’s inhalers always go in a second bag, she gets 2, a normal one for toiletries and one for the inhalers

Manchester airport sounds like they are on a nasty power trip.

I think the policing of the liquids thing is inherently sexist. We know most womywear makeup. Most makeup is in liquid form. It's just making us check in bags when we don't need to. Irritates the hell out of me.

I've bought teeny bottles and decanted what makeup and face products I need for a 3 day work trip. It would all fit fine into the liquids bag, I thought it had to be 10 bottles or less. Next trip I might try just carry on rather than checking in a bag.

OnTheBoardwalk · 26/02/2023 23:01

there have not been any serious attacks on airport/planes from the airport itself but Manchester has and always will be a serious target, be it historically from the IRA to the arena bombing and others. Makes me feel safer knowing they are on a 'nasty power trip'

any doubt put them in the right sized bag in your hand held and you will get through security. I got caught out by an unknown tin of Vaseline

Augend23 · 27/02/2023 12:52

Re the sizing, I think I find the ones I bought from Primark had it embossed on them, so you couldn't see it had it on it but it was physically pressed into the plastic on the bottom.

Lots of women decant products into contact lens cases, they are tiny and that amount will last longer than you think. Do a trial a few weeks before you travel and you will see how much little you need.

I fly frequently with a personal item only ( no cabin bag or checked bag ).

tass1960 · 28/02/2023 14:25

Last time I travelled with hand luggage only I bought plastic bag type things that I could decant shampoo, conditional, cleanser etc into. They were easy to fit into the clear plastic bags. I had no liquids to bring back (only empty reusable bags) and could bring some perfume home instead

SleekMamma · 28/02/2023 22:49

Well this has been most educational! Thanks all, I think I shall be flying just hand luggage next time!

Thanks, I was going to put my deodorant stick just in my bag but I think I’ll buy one at the airport instead and leave it behind when done. I’ve decanted some shampoo etc, but I’ve just noticed that the bottles don’t have the measurements printed on them. It says on the Manchester airport website that they need to. Has anyone found this? Do they actually check? Thanks.

Buy a stick deo after security, but bring it back with you after instead of leaving it behind! I’ve flown with a stick deo in hand luggage from 10s of different airports and never counted as liquid, so you should be fine on the way back. Never flown from Manchester and not planning to after this thread!
