What’s a ‘liquid’?

Hi all, I’m flying from Manchester next month and only taking carry on. I usually book hold luggage, but not this time. I was wondering what is considered a liquid. Obviously things like moisturiser, shampoo etc. but what about things like lipsticks, cream eyeshadow and foundation sticks? They’re actually quite solid, but would they be considered liquids? I usually book hold luggage but can’t this time. Also, will my 7 year old be able to carry a liquids bag through too. Thanks everyone.

I don't put lipstick, powder eyeshadow, powder blusher (any powder make up really) or eye pencil into the plastic bag. I also don't put my inhaler in it. I have never had my bags pulled for doing this.

BlueberryBuffin · 19/02/2023 12:11

Manchester would consider anything short of solid rock to be a liquid. And they're rude. Presumably because anyone who's flown out of any other airport is understandably surprised by what Manchester classes as a liquid.

If you consider liquids to be creams, pastes and anything cosmetic AT ALL then you will be closer to the Man interpretation of liquid

Liquids are anything not solid. Lip gloss liquid. Lipstick not.

Physics agrees with you. Manchester airport does not!

America12 · 19/02/2023 12:31

I never put lipstick in my plastic bag, or anything cream eg blusher.

journeyofinsanity · 19/02/2023 12:44

Wow some people have really been out through the ringer. I literally only put in liquids that are obviously liquid. Anything else I can't be arsed. Never been pulled up on anything an I travel a lot. Mascara, lipstick, Foundation etc. none of it in the baggie.

countrygirl99 · 19/02/2023 12:53

If you work on treating anything that you can spread as a liquid you'll be fine.

countrygirl99 · 19/02/2023 12:55

Mind you, I found 3 small cartons of orange juice that I'd forgotten in the bottom of my bag that weren't picked up at Heathrow.

PegasusReturns · 19/02/2023 13:00

I fly several times a month and always leave lipsticks and compact foundations in my bag. Have never had an issue in any airport, although I assume if you ask they would say put in plastic bag….

cant wait until more airports bring in the scanners which don’t require anything to be removed.

Brendabigbaps · 19/02/2023 13:03

Flew from Manchester in December, we were pulled up for having little Vaseline tubs in our bags, they class them as liquid.

I didn’t know medication should be in a separate bag, we had various meds in our hand luggage and it wasn’t mentioned at all by security.

greenacrylicpaint · 19/02/2023 11:53

prescription medication is separate from the liquids bag. you need to show the prescription with your name (pharmacy sticker on the box).

What nonsense.
None of my medications are in the box with my name on.
And some of them are bought elsewhere

I take my epipen through and it never gets flagged up

I fly monthly

Thanks everyone. Seems like Manchester are particularly fussy compared to other airports. It’s interesting that Manchester’s website says lipsticks aren’t liquids but then people have been pulled up for them. I’ll try and squeeze as much as I can into the little bag. Hopefully as my dd can have a bag too we’ll be ok.

I fly from there usually. Never had a problem.

But I agree if you are going to get stopped anywhere it's Manchester. It's a bloody awful airport

notimagain · 19/02/2023 14:20

Uk gov info, including a list here:

www.gov.uk/hand-luggage-restrictions

As has been said airports can then set their own more restrictive limits…

Manchester has a reputation…..

Yes, Manchester are really fussy and if they spot anything in your bag that should have been separated (so electronics as well as liquids/gels/pastes) your bag gets selected for a second search which they will do really slowly and then go through everything in a really patronising way so you know you've fucked up. They get extra points if they cause you to miss your flight.

Most unusual thing I've seen while waiting for my bag to be released (I travel with test equipment for work so it always looks weird to them on the X-ray machine) was snow globes. There were a whole group of security staff trying to decide whether they were more or less than 100 ml and whether they should be allowed through or not. Sadly for the man who had probably bought gifts for his DC, I think they said no.

They really are rude aren't they. The most unpleasant security experience I've had anywhere in the world.

OP - anything that you might be questioning, consider it a liquid if it's going through Manchester.

I lost a brand new bottle of REN cleanser at an airport, not Manchester, I had assumed I could put my small suitcase in the hold so packed my lovely cleanser, but was then told I was only entitled to a carry on, luckily my small bag qualified for size but I had to do a bit of hasty repacking, and the REN, being a full-size wasn’t eligible for the plastic bag of doom. I pleaded, but they were adamant. I reckon the woman who confiscated it had her eye on it……..

IaltagDhubh · 19/02/2023 18:33

According to Luxembourg airport, marzipan is a liquid 🤔

I had my inhaler pulled at Manchester and nearly missed my flight.

Tallulasdancingshoes · 19/02/2023 20:56

Thanks everyone. Don’t think I’ll risk anything. @drspouse thats terrible about your inhaler.

Peanut Butter is considered a liquid.

I had mine confiscated on the way to a European marathon. I am still upset about it.

You can't pour peanut butter.

dementedpixie · 19/02/2023 21:03

You can spread peanut butter though as its not a solid. It's liquids, pastes and gels that count.

MargaritaRita · 19/02/2023 21:12

Not worth the risk, so I always assume that stick style lip balms, lipsticks, and cover stick things go in the plastic bag of doom. I don't bring much however and have it down to an art form now. I only use Mineral Magic face powder and powder blush and highlighter, so they can stay outside the doom bag.

I decant my fave moisturiser, toothpaste, etc. into those little round screw top pots. You would be amazed how much they hold and they take up so little space. I don't bother with deodorant roll on or spray they are too big and bulky, I use the deo wipes instead, they are good enough for short trips and don't need to go in the doom bag. I buy anything else I need when I get to where I am going, which is never the Gobi Desert or Outer Mongolia.

Thank goodness I was on my own and not with the DCs. DH says I'm a nightmare in security but it's just due to nearly 20 years of jobsworth Manchester staff.

We lost a jar of marmite at security a few years ago as it was considered a liquid. I err on the side of caution now for anything I don't want to get binned!

I was very upset when they wouldn't let me take my humous bagel through - I ate it in front of them!

Tallulasdancingshoes · 19/02/2023 21:39

@TheBitchOfTheVicar What! The humous was already on the bagel? And they wouldn’t let it through - that’s madness 😂
