Cabin pram

I have both a yoyo2 and bugaboo butterfly. I prefer the latter as it has a bigger canopy hood and built in foot rest. However I can't see anything to 100% guarantee it can be taken as carry on. I know BA accept the yoyo but does anyone know if other prams are definitely accepted as carry on? The butterfly folds down similarly to the yoyo but is slightly bigger folded.

Bugaboo butterfly for sure

Raggeo · 05/03/2023 07:39

I have a GB Pockit buggy. It folds smaller than the Yoyo but isn't as well known by airlines. Noone has ever asked to measure it or see it fold in advance of boarding. Just telling them it's cabin size and I'm taking it in with me is enough. Once on a return flight the gate staff didn't understand me but I said it was like the Yoyo and that was fine.

34and3 · 05/03/2023 07:39

We fly in three weeks and I'm still undecided which to take.

Butterfly pluses - giant canopy, foot rest/ extension

Yoyo plus - guaranteed can go in cabin.

But tiny hood and no foot rest. Would need to take parasol and baby wouldn't sleep as comfortably.

@34and3 bugaboo butterfly also has a big basket! Can get loads in there

34and3 · 05/03/2023 07:45

@moretothegame yes thanks! I already have both prams just can't decide which to take away with us

I would just take the yo-yo. I never use an umbrella either. You can peg a thin muslin just along the top folded so it adds a few extra cm shade ( not hanging down covering air just folded strip)
We use a large mountain buggy at home, but I still find yo-yo fine for travel and Ds naps fine in it

I always take yo-yo on board as hand luggage, pay extra for it. Last time we arrived at standsted no else received any prams once off and had to wait to collect from luggage carasol, it was a 90min wait/ que to get through security which would have been annoying carrying tired toddler and stopping him running off.

We also had a flight board, then everyone had to get off and flight cancelled and hotel overnight, but luggage already loaded and no one got any luggage off until the next morning before reloading onto new flight. Super handy to have pram for nap whilst we hung around for ages in airport with delay and then hotel ( about 5hr wait). Always pack enough basics and nappies for 24hrs also.

@notsureconfused thanks for the reply can I just ask one other thing I've seen the they said the seat material isn't the best as it bobbles and stuff how are you finding yours?

whiteroseredrose · 05/03/2023 08:43

I wouldn't take a risk on anything being put in the hold of you can avoid it.

Twenty years ago now, but DS's pushchair was taken at the plane door and didn't turn up at the other end. Two days without a pushchair before it was delivered to our accommodation.

I'd take the one you know will be accepted into the cabin.

FlounderingFruitcake · 05/03/2023 08:49

Take the YoYo. I always get asked ‘is it a YoYo’ so wouldn’t risk it. Have you tried baby sleeping in it recently? I know it’s not fully lie flat but mine sleep amazingly well in it, in fact it’s the only place my just turned 2YO will even contemplate a nap. The sunshade is also fine, I used it daily, even when I lived in the US where all summer was 30++ degrees. Sunscream their legs, angle it away from the sun when you stop moving. You could also get a snoozeshade if you were really worried.

I think you need to check with the airline.

I have a yo-yo and have taken it on the plane with me. I did a return trip in December and again in February all with easy jet.

It was on the return leg of the last trip I was questioned when checking in luggage about my buggy. I said it's a yoyo it can go in the cabin. She said not unless you have purchased priority boarding! I said when did this come in as I'd not been stopped over the past 2 months she said it's been policy for a while....

Anyway she let me through and I wasn't stopped at the plane either....

I have no idea what I would have done the other side when we landed at Gatwick as the walk from the plane to the luggage belt was huge and I'd 2 young kids by myself!

loverofpants · 05/03/2023 09:37

You can buy a footrest for the yoyo we have one, I think there are dupes on Amazon for a cheaper one it just clicks on to the bottom. I've also heard good things about Leclerc strollers for cabin hold but not sure if available in the UK

34and3 · 05/03/2023 10:16

Yes maybe the yoyo footrest would be a good addition... and the mosquito net!

Caspianberg · 05/03/2023 11:37

@redpinkyellow - yes you need to pay for priority boarding now on easyyet as all other options don’t include cabin luggage for above head, only handbag by feet option.

backinthebox · 05/03/2023 20:01

Buggies as a rule at BA are tagged for ‘return to aircraft door,’ however this is not available at all airports, but you can check beforehand. A passenger with their own paid-for seat (including children 2 and over) can take one piece of hand baggage into the cabin as long as it is within the allowed dimensions. I’ve never seen it done, but I cannot see why you wouldn’t be allowed to take a buggy in a bag into the cabin as your piece of hand luggage. The maximum size of a piece of hand baggage that is guaranteed a place in the cabin is 40 x 30 x 15cm and is intended for the purpose of carrying things such as passport, purse, essential medication, small electronic items. It would have to be a pretty small buggy if you chose that instead! You can have a second piece up to 56 x 45 x 25cm. This is the piece that people are thinking of when they try to shove all their worldly goods into a wheelie bag. You might be able to buy a buggy that folds down this small - I don’t know. I never took a buggy in an aircraft cabin when my kids were small, I used a baby carrier. There is no guarantee that this second piece will fit in the cabin - if too many people bring the full amount of cabin baggage staff will have to remove some to put in the hold. If you have your buggy tagged for return to gate it will be returned to the gate at the other end. If you don’t get your buggy tagged for return to gate and there is no room for it on board, it will be returned to the baggage carousel. In reality most larger pieces of cabin baggage are usually accommodated on board, but it is becoming more and more frequent to have to remove baggage from passengers to put in the hold because more people are trying to max out their allowance at every opportunity.

The people I see on aircraft who struggle most with babies or toddlers are the ones who try to bring the most stuff with them. It can get very stressful when you expect to have full and free access to a large amount of stuff only to find it doesn’t fit and is put in the hold, or it is put in an overhead locker and someone puts their bag on top of it, or you find there is no space near your seat for your bag. Those who travel light seem to find they manage better. But if you want to try and get your buggy on, give it a go. Just don’t expect that you have a right to put it in the cabin, because no one does! This is a common misconception.

Mine hasn't bobbled yet. I've not noticed any problems with the material. I've got the black one if that makes any difference.

34and3 · 06/03/2023 05:43

@notsureconfused nor has mine. We've been using the footmuff for the last few months which has probably helped to protect the seat

I have taken the butterfly on a few flights as hand luggage

mog2022 · 21/06/2023 22:23

Have you flown on TUI or easyJet at all?

trrk · 22/06/2023 10:10

WestOfWestminster · 13/02/2023 09:05

Why would you need it to go into the overhead locker rather than the hold?

Sometimes if it is gate checked into the hold you won't get it back until the baggage carasol (airport and/or airline dependent). If you have a long trip with layovers it's really handy to know your stroller will fit in the overhead compartment so you definately get to use it during the layover. Also if you have a bad back or don't like baby carriers for some other reason it can be useful to have the stroller for the immigration queue etc

These reasons particularly the first one is why we got the Yoyo but do wish it had a bigger sun shade.

We've taken our IckleBubba Globe on easyJet a few times now both in the cabin (before the luggage policy change) and in the hold. We were given the buggy back as soon as we got off the plane. I think we'd barely got down the steps and could see the carry case waiting on the tarmac 😂

tacomaco · 22/06/2023 10:20

This was years ago but we had a buggy that went onboard in the overhead. We bought it as we came back from Australia and arrived into London very early. We didn’t get the hood buggy back until baggage reclaim. We had to carry DS for quite a long time. Vowed never again so to those saying there aren’t buggies for the cabin, there are and for us this was 14 or so years ago now.

trrk · 22/06/2023 10:24

I have taken the Yoyo onboard as hand luggage Easyjet a few months ago. It was actually after the policy change but we didn't realise when checking in and it wasn't possible to add the priority after checking in. Not sure we would have paid for it anyway when they will gate check it for free. In the end we just decided to be prepared to gate check it but they were not checking the hand luggage carefully on either flight. On the flight back from Amsterdam they were about to gate check it but saw it was a Yoyo and let us take it onboard (perhaps they thought we had priority?).

FlounderingFruitcake · 22/06/2023 10:26

I’ve taken a YoYo with easyjet a few times, no issues whatsoever

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · 22/06/2023 12:04

We’ve taken the butterfly on tui as hand luggage, not tried easy jet

mog2022 · 22/06/2023 20:44

Did they weigh or measure your butterfly? Thanks
