Seville early July. Too hot??

Curlingstone · 01/02/2023 12:24

DD doing GCSEs so hoping to take advantage of an early finish and go away 1st week of July. Is Seville just too hot ? I'm not built for intense heat! Thinking 4/5 nights in Seville then maybe Cadiz and the beach? Hotel with a pool an option. Flights v cheap. Probably 10/12 days in total.
For context, we're pottering, history liking, book reading, foodie (me) types. Both love swimming in the sea. Want to travel between places by train.
Cordoba & Granada also look great.
Any thoughts or recommendations most welcome, Thanks

I think it gets up to 40 degrees in July. I was there a few years ago in June and it was over 36 and very oppressive

Reclining · 01/02/2023 12:27

Although if you're in a hotel with a pool it might be tolerable

Curlingstone · 01/02/2023 12:33

@Reclining crikey...I'll wilt quickly in that sort of heat - pool or no pool! No wonder flights so cheap 😆

It's the hottest bit of Spain! I went in early June and it hit 40 most days. It's a fab city but if you don't like the heat go at a different time of year.

Curlingstone · 01/02/2023 12:38

@Galadriel90 defo sounds like one for a spring or autumn break instead.
So glad I asked on here - could have been a sweaty, uncomfortable mistake.
Back to pouring over maps and MN for ideas😁

YES
Seville and Cordoba are the hottest areas in Spain and you will be going in the hottest time of the year. Unless you are happy with Australian-heatwave type of temperatures, don't do it.

I went to Cordoba years ago in very late August and I honestly thought I was going to die on those beautiful streets 😂

In the last few years the Summer in south west Spain has gone from the ocassional three-day heatwave in July or August to consistently way above average temperatures from June to October, with records broken regularly.

hotdiggetydog · 01/02/2023 12:42

I lived in Seville for a year.

Absolutely do not go in July.

40 degrees plus, no breeze. Horrendous.

Curlingstone · 01/02/2023 14:21

@DewinDwl @hotdiggetydog I think those temps really might finish me off!! Thanks for the warnings 😊

Seville would definitely be way too hot for me in July. It’s a fantastic city, but even the locals want to get the hell out of the place in July & August. Cadiz is wonderful, you will love it and the temperature is more tolerable in mid summer, particularly if you are bobbing around in the sea. Wink

maddy68 · 01/02/2023 14:31

No it's fine. It's quite shady in the main. Enjoy. It's wonderful

adriftabroad · 01/02/2023 14:32

NO. Unless you love relentless heat and no sleep.

BarbaraofSeville · 01/02/2023 14:35

We thought we were being smart by going in May a few years ago, but the summer heatwave started early and it was over 40C every day. We got off the bus from Granada and the temperature sign said 46C.

We spent an awful lot of time sitting under trees in parks and under misters outside cafes. It's a fabulous place to go, but we didn't spend as much time seeing the city as we'd have hoped because it was so damn hot. We even tried to adapt to 'Spanish time' by having a long siesta each afternoon and going out for dinner at midnight, but it was still warm then. As for hotels with pools, there isn't that many in the city so they get booked up and/or are expensive.

glasshole · 01/02/2023 14:36

We went in June in 2018 and my daughter (who is normally a sun worshiper) got badly burned in the first 2-3 of being in the pool! My beige is a ginger and despite factor 50 he was also a little burned by the end. And we weren't even out in the peak periods, very much 9-11.30 and then 3.30pm to 7. I was very shocked by the temperate, it didn't get that hot in Tunisia!

Celinia · 01/02/2023 14:59

We looked at Jerez and Huelva a few years ago but Covid got in the way. They’re not supposed to be as hot as Seville and they’re close to Cadiz.

Mumski45 · 01/02/2023 15:25

We went to Barcelona, Madrid, Seville, Cordoba and Grenada in July last year and yes it was hot. We managed OK and did lots of sightseeing but we were prepared and planned around it. Ironically we did a few ebike tours which were fab as we were moving with a bit of breeze but no effort. The trains were great.

cptartapp · 01/02/2023 15:38

We went at New Year and it was t shirt weather. I wouldn't contemplate July.

redpinkyellow · 01/02/2023 15:44

I went in July once and the heat was extreme. I was on my period and felt like I would pass out. I think I even vomited a few times - hideous and we only went for the day

Curlingstone · 01/02/2023 16:17

I'm a menopausal redhead so would probably get heatstroke !

Clariana · 01/02/2023 16:19

It gets so hot your shoes stick to the tarmac on the pavements! I've done it for work, but I definitely wouldn't chose to go there in summer.

Whataretheodds · 01/02/2023 16:20

I went in May one year (after Granada) and it was mid/late 30s. The (reasonably budget) guest house we had booked was advertised as having A/C but it wasn't switched on and reception explained it's only switched on 'in the summer'.

Definitely do not go. Fellow menopausal living in Spain.

SunSandAndLotsOfGin · 01/02/2023 18:41

I went in July last year and it was horrendous. The place is truly beautiful but the heat was immense with no breeze what so ever. I'm a sun lover and even I struggled.

I grew up in Algeria, but I was shocked by the heat in Seville in June a few years ago. At the same time there was an international athletics competition going on there, and even the African athletes were struggling.

Hoppinggreen · 01/02/2023 21:36

We own a property about an hour away from Seville on the coast.
I love Seville and we have been quite a few times but never in July and August. In fact a lot of people from Seville and Madrid de camp to the area we own our property in for the summer to get some sea breeze.

MissAmbrosia · 01/02/2023 22:09

Lisbon might be better as on Atlantic coast. I would never contemplate Seville in high summer.
