Recommend a city break that a 9 year old will enjoy

I have BA vouchers from a cancelled 2020 trip which I need to use up before September, so looking to take DD (9) on a city break in May/June.

I'd like to stick to Europe for shorter flight times, flying from London.

Any destinations that you'd recommend that you've enjoyed with kids of similar age?

Valencia - we did BioParc, Oceanografic, cycling in Turia gardens, La Malvarrosa beach, a food market and the science museum.

Rome - particularly if they've done the Romans at school!

What are her interests?

I agree Valencia could be amazing. You could fly into there spend a couple.of days and get the train to Barcelona and fly back from there . That would be great.

Paris or Barcelona. We took DD and younger sister (6) to Paris for her 8th birthday, she kept saying she wanted to go and we had EasyJet vouchers to use up. We had the BEST time, Eiffel Tower, boat trip down the Seine, the Montparnasse tower at night for views over the city, wander down the Champs Elyseé - they absolutely loved it.
Barcelona is a small city so very walkable with the added bonus of the beach, the Magic Fountains, Gaudi park. Will definitely take our kids there one day, it's one of our favourite places.

Copenhagen is really great for kids. We went when my son was 5. He's 8 now and still wants to go back

Closer to home, York. Absolutely loads to do and see. Lots of Harry Potter stuff, if that's of interest. Museums, Galleries, a cat cafe, Minster (often the masons can be seen working on carvings), river cruises and ghost walks.

Was in Copenhagen last summer when my daughter turned 9. She and her brother (12) loved it. Swimming by the harbour, cycling, Tivoli Gardens, food markets. Was bright and warm when we were there in the summer too, though comfortable enough to get around a city. Everything works in Denmark so it's very easy place to spend time.

Rome. All the Ancient Roman's & gladiator stuff, obviously.
And the food - pizza, pasta, ice cream - what's not to like?
Sitting at pavement cafes.
Coin in the Trevi Fountain.
Mouth of Truth.

Thank you for all the suggestions. Really liking the idea of Copenhagen, so will look more into that. And also Rome (which I've been to lots before in the past, so quite keen to go somewhere new, but it does tick the boxes for a 9 year old).

Sorry to hijack the thread but would you mind if I ask where you stayed in Paris? We are going in may half term with our three (13, 10 and 7) and looking for someone to stay that is reasonable for families! Thanks v much

Lisbon!

Pleasepleasepleaseno · 26/01/2023 20:54

Yes Lisbon is a great call. My kids loved it there.

ANewDayDawned · 26/01/2023 21:03

Budapest. Easy to get around on trams, boat trip on river, all the baths- old fashioned big swimming pool bathing complexes, outdoor and indoor, all over the city

MaggieMagpie357 · 27/01/2023 18:16

@Teeheehee1579 we stayed here: www.hotel-peyris.com/en/

A bit quirky but clean and well placed for transport links into central Paris!!

Underparmummy · 27/01/2023 18:18

Seville was a great city break when we had kids ages 5-9.

Im taking my 8 year old to Dublin at Easter so I hope Dublin too!

BreakfastClub80 · 27/01/2023 18:21

Oslo - great museums (The Fram, village museum, Viking boats if open again) plus the summer park (brilliant high ropes course). Also, a trip to the islands. Expensive but great fun.

museumum · 27/01/2023 18:24

Amsterdam went well for us (and London - we live in Scotland).
next up would be Rome. I think he’ll enjoy Barcelona too (although the food and eating times in Rome will be easier)

May not be the climate you're looking for but I took my daughter to Edinburgh at that age and we had an absolutely amazing time

Can I ask where you stayed/any recommendations of where to stay.

MaggieMagpie357 · 27/01/2023 22:22

@mrsanflowerpot if you scroll back up a few posts I shared the link of the hotel we stayed in. The area was perfect for great transport links into Central Paris.

Rome. Download the Trova trails app and if she likes scavenger hunts and puzzles you can do a fun, self-guided tour around the Colosseum, the Pantheon and through the centre - all for 15 pounds.
