Allaboardthegroovytrain · 26/01/2023 03:39

So…me and my sis in law have booked a couple of nights in Dublin and just wondering what people recommend to do aside from drinking!

Not to bothered about galleries and museums but would like to do some sightseeing so what is good to visit please?

TIA

What season?

Slimjimtobe · 26/01/2023 04:17

Do the hop on hop off : it’s great (live not too far and have done it w few times)
From the hop off bus you can jump off and do the:
Guinness Tour
Stephens Green (park)
there’s the castle or jail and Trinity College etc

Dublin Zoo if you are into that

see a show at the Gaiety or Bord Gais theatre

The Avoca cafe/ shop is lovely for something to eat during the day (so nice!)

Vintagebusafternoon tea. Front seats upper deck are fab if you can get them if you don't mind sharing a row of seats (slightly narrower than normal bus seat rows). Dublin Castle tour is interesting if you are interested in Irish History. Viking tour is popular (but I have never done it). The Little Museum of Dublin is quirky. There are some food walking tours that are fun.

purplecorkheart · 26/01/2023 18:45

Oh there is a Silver Jewellery school where you can make your own ring but I think that takes the whole day so probably not ideal unless the winter is dire.

Wildehorses · 27/01/2023 01:50

Kilmainham jail definitely worth doing, take a DART train along the coast to seaside town like Dun Laoghaire and walk along pier

If you like shopping, Grafton St

Then the Horseshoe bar at The Shelbourne for a martini: www.theshelbourne.com/

or maybe The Westbury at the top of Grafton St

Pseudonamed · 27/01/2023 13:08

Depends on where in Dublin but I presume the city centre?
You can go to, and not drink, Guiness storehouse and Jamesons storehouse.
Kilmainham Gaol, I know you said not museums but Chester Beaty is brilliant.
Garden of remembrance, st stephens green.
Epic is a museum but a really bloody good one. Very interactive etc. Leprechaun museum a bit shit but a bit of craic and you will find one nowhere else!

Ineverpromisedyouarosegarden · 27/01/2023 14:42

Another vote for Kilmainham jail tour.

mathanxiety · 27/01/2023 17:50

Next week! A bit chilly for walking in Howth then...

If you like shopping, Grafton Street is nice, and you should poke around Wicklow Street too. The Powerscourt Centre is a Georgian townhouse plus courtyard converted into crafty boutiques and that sort of interesting little shoppe. It's on William Street.

If you want to explore a nice seaside suburb and enjoy a decent pub lunch, head south to Dalkey on the Dart. Killiney Hill can be climbed for spectacular views from the top (Killiney Dart station). Wrap up.

Slimjimtobe · 27/01/2023 17:58

Where is the silver jewellery making place please ?

sounds great

Flatandhappy · 28/01/2023 10:40

If you are into theatre I would recommend the Gate or the Abbey.

backatchababy · 28/01/2023 10:58

I went with some girlfriends just before Christmas and agree with the gaol plus the guiness factory tour was fab.

Alsonification · 28/01/2023 11:12

If you go into Stephen's green be careful of the seagulls. I'm not even joking. They're absolutely lethal. I was there during the summer & was sitting on a bench in the park reading a book. A woman sat beside me & took out a sandwich. Instantly we were surrounded by at least 30 seagulls & one of them had gone with the sandwich! The seagulls then paced around us watching for more food. I had to leave. As I was walking out I saw another fly off with the ice cream from a child's cone!
Now maybe in winter it's quieter but it was the maddest thing I'd ever seen hahahaha

The Collective and Other place called Silverworks and the School of Jewellery Dublin

Villagetoraiseachild · 28/01/2023 13:29

Another vote for the lovely Chester Beatty on a winters day.
But jeez merry joseph, fifty euros for a trip on an auld bus?
There was a nice trad tea room on Grafton Street, was that Bewleys?
Otherwise, just lovely to potter about and see what takes your fancy.

Villagetoraiseachild · 28/01/2023 13:36

Actually, the bus looks fun and would give you an overview even if it's a bit spendy.
You could feed your leftovers to the gulls on St Stephen's Green.....

Some lovely upper middle class suggestions here ;-)
As an honorary Dub here are my thoughts. You could do the Epic museum at CHQ in the Docklands.
Day trip to Howth is always lovely.
Phoenix Park
The National Gallery is superb and always worth a visit.
Wander around Rathmines/Ranelagh for some cute cafes and boutiques.
enjoy!

Joolsin · 28/01/2023 17:03

My votes for best traditional central Dublin pubs are: Grogans (does fab toasties for lunch too), Kehoes, The Long Hall.

If you're interested in history/architecture, walks around the Georgian squares like Merrion Square, Fitzwilliam Square, etc are lovely.

Joolsin · 28/01/2023 17:06

George's street arcade is a victorian arcade with all sorts of different shops. It leads on to George's Street. Some good second hand shops on that street, Oxfam, Enable Ireland (where I got a skirt and a dress last week!).

Radyward · 28/01/2023 17:23

My favourite authentic Dublin pubs are Mcdaids off Grafton St and The Stags Head in the City Centre..The old Stand off Grafton St is lovely too.
Defo The Horseshoe Bar.
The Bus is fun. Shows James street which is lovely on a sunny/ fresh winters day where The Guinness Brewery is..i like Kilmaimhan Gaol and the Royal hospital Kilmainhan ( can hop on hop off the bus there)
The long library at Trinity is fab too.
Avoid O Connell st ( rough) and Temple Bar - plastic Dublin!! Over priced.
Definately go to Howth on the DART to see Dublin Bay. The shops in Dublin are the same as The UK but more exoensive!! Avoca off Grafton Streey has a lovely cafe and crafts.
Dingje icecream parlour off Grafton has fab sea salt and gin icecream and not too bad price wise. The cafe up stairs in Brown Thomas feels luxurious. Nice for Tea and cake !!!

Sleepyteach · 29/01/2023 09:10

I went for the day last summer with a friend and we did a hop on hop off bus tour and EPIC museum. I wasn’t sure about EPIC before we went, but it was really good and there’s a reason it’s won a bunch of awards! With the buses, go for the green one. We didn’t and the buses were really infrequent. A kind green bus driver took pity on us and let us get on his bus (and proceeded to rip us over the speakers until we got off 😂).

Notimeforaname · 29/01/2023 19:00

A pp suggested a day trip to Howth. I second that.
Also check out Bray or Greystones. All 3 of these places can be reached easily from the city centre on the dart, a train which runs along the coast of Dublin.

What nights of the week will you be in Dublin? On certain nights of the week some pubs do comedy/open mic nights for a small fee or some even for free.

If you're interested in places for food I can recommend for any taste or budget.

If the weather isn't shitty, Stephen's Green and Merrion Square are nice parks to walk around.
A few shopping centre around too.

There a few good LGBT+ bars around if you like going to those for shows plus shit loads of bars in all shapes and sizes.
