Going to the same resort/hotel twice

Does anyone go back to the same place each year?

Last year we found somewhere that ticked all the boxes. Affordable, near to a beautiful big beach, good food, clean hotel with several pools, splash bit for the younger one, Lane pool for me, decent low key entertainment but nothing too tacky or cheesy, sports bar for the teenager. I was surprised how nice it was as have never done and all inclusive type holiday before.

Trouble is that now I just can't seem to find anywhere that looks as good or certainly not for the money.

Torn between booking up the same place or taking a chance on somewhere else.

It's the Viva Blue Playa de Muro. There isn't much around in the area, just a few shops and restaurants but we only really went out to the beach and shops.

Truth is I think that none of us are really too sure what exactly we want from a holiday and it's tough to keep everyone happy.

I'd like a bit of walking and some sightseeing, the teenager is only interested in football and food, youngest still just wants a pool to splash about n, dh just wants a rest.

Sounds like your hotel keeps all those varied and competing needs happy - thats a huge achievement for a family holiday with a teenager…….perfect ingredients for a great holiday. I also find on a repeat that you relax into it much sooner because you know what to expect.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 24/01/2023 18:39

Just go back. We went to the sane place 6 years running and had booked a 7th before lockdown.

TerfOnATrain · 24/01/2023 18:39

Never, there is a whole world out there, every visit to the same place is a new place not discovered.

TeenDivided · 24/01/2023 18:41

We go back to the same places.
Instead of spending half the holiday finding our feet we can start to relax faster and enjoy revisiting our favourite places.

Heyahun · 24/01/2023 18:42

I never ever would have done this but I have a toddler now and found a great place in Mallorca last year and we actually went in may and then again end of September as it was really affordable and so easy with our little one! (We went self catering though!)

we are actually thinking of booking another week for May again and his year and taking my parents this time 🙈

Me too. I always want to find a new town/museum/ancient site/restaurant/market/beauty spot. Life's too short to he repeating holidays.

We went to Spain (unimaginative, all inclusive holiday) and a lady on the last day said to the passive aggressive manager, we will see you next year, as usual (she hugged her). It's nice that she had that experience but I couldn't wait to get away and definitely wouldn't go back.

It HAS to be a new place each time. I appreciate that others may not feel that way. It's whatever floats your boat.

OpportunityKnockss · 24/01/2023 19:01

How do you know the lady doesn’t have numerous other holidays a year to new places?
l am fortunate to travel 8 to 10 times a year on holidays so now don’t mind repeating a place.

Bigweekend · 24/01/2023 19:07

DH and I usually had 2 holidays pa. One would be an adventure somewhere we'd never been before, the other was a return to a favourite and comfortable place where we knew all the best spots and felt settled from the moment we arrived - like going home.

If I'm honest the adventures were the more interesting talking points, but I always looked forward to the favourite place more.

Bigweekend · 24/01/2023 19:10

I'm not sure I really understand people who sneer at the people returning to a favourite place. Do you never go back to a favourite restaurant, clothes shop, walk, friend's house? There are, afterall a million opportunities for all of those things, why repeat one?

amylou8 · 24/01/2023 19:11

Depends what sort of holiday you're after. I want to see new places, explore a bit and wouldn't dream of going back to the same place. But if you're more a beach, relax, pool person, then you could pretty much be anywhere, and if you've found somewhere you like then why not.

LlynTegid · 24/01/2023 19:14

I don't, though when going somewhere for an event have sometimes used a hotel I have stayed in before. I seldom now do the traditional week or fortnight by a pool or beach now though.

CryInToYourCornflakesNicola · 24/01/2023 19:15

I do both, repeats and new places.
Depends what I want from a holiday.

I have 2 hotels and 3 self catering places I really love that I repeat visit. Usually manage one of them in a year, so I suppose it's a five year cycle. But over the last 6 or 7 years I've been managing 3 hols a year. So one repeat place, and two totally new.

If this changed and I could only have one holiday a year, I'd pick a repeat. Just because I know what I'm doing, where I'm going, where the best eateries are, how much it'll cost in extras, I quite like certainty, so knowing I'm going to a lovely place for certain would make me feel better among other reasons.

I say if you found somewhere that ticks that many family members boxes, then go again. Theres other years to go elsewhere.

None of those are the same though. I return to restaurants, walks, shops because there are limited options that are local. Choosing to travel to the same place isn't the same.

Not that I think anyone has been sneery though. Some like me wouldn't do it for reasons of wanting to explore somewhere new. Doesn't mean I'm sneering at anyone who prefers the familiar. I just don't relate to it.

watchfulwishes · 24/01/2023 19:18

Of course I return to great places! Enjoy your holiday.

Cincinnatus · 24/01/2023 19:20

We are going back to the same hotel for I think the fifth time this year. It works for us and the children are happy.

Throwncrumbs · 24/01/2023 19:23

Bigweekend · 23/01/2023 21:20

I think there are two different types of holiday maker. One who wants to see the world, even if that only means hotel pools in different locations and won't go back because they want to tick off another on the list and another who enjoys a relaxing break somewhere they're comfortable/familiar with.

Over the years I've been both 😆

I’m both too, love seeing the world, but love my private little Spanish place, that I’ve been to many times 😍

Has anyone sneered? Expressed a preference yes. Sneered, no.

Making a different choice and saying why isn't sneering.

wetpants · 24/01/2023 20:40

When our DC were little, we went to Sani resort three years on a row. It just worked so well and we knew it would blissful and a chance for a total relaxation (well as much as it can be with toddlers..).

Usernamen · 24/01/2023 21:10

I’ve been forced to do this after meeting DP as I’m much better travelled than he is and he really wants to see places I’ve already been to. We’re essentially repeating an interrailling trip this spring that I did 10 years ago. It’s not bad though, because they’re pretty fantastic places and I’m looking forward to seeing them again.

Yeah, that’s really not what the thread is about at all. 😳

But, great humble brag!

kateandme · 25/01/2023 06:24

I think it's great.see it as a good thing op! And surely it will still slightly differ.no holiday xan be exactly the same. And it's not like its you'd 10th time and you don't been to all the placesvyih could.
Just forgot go with expectations.tgeb it will fail because of your mindset.
Plus I think it's easier so close to your last visit. I think tgd problems come when you look back after years and you've changed, the kids gave, place has etc and you those tinted glasses places.

Forever42 · 25/01/2023 06:33

We've stayed in the same place with kids 4 times and are hoping to go again this year. It's self-catering in France though and we drive so we usually do a week there and a week in a place we haven't been to before.

Sunshineseabeach · 25/01/2023 08:44

Normally not unless we are visiting family, we have repeated a few places but different accommodation. We like variety, exploring different places, discover something new and we are not the type that enjoy staying around the hotel all the time. We like to go an explore different beaches, towns, villages, enjoy the culture, etc.

AdelaideRo · 25/01/2023 11:42

I'm a city break type. I have favourite hotels in all the european cities easily accessible by eurostar! Some I've stayed in 3 or 4 times.

Sundaychiller · 25/01/2023 12:25

@glasshole which hotel in Tunisia is it please?
thanks
