Looking for a holiday cottage..."£60 a night for your dates"....oh great, click reserve....oh that'll be £120 cleaning fee and £96 service fees. Just fuck off and list the prices properly!

Yes I know they add on cleaning fees and a service charge, but I've never had them this high. Bloody annoying.

Oh god I've had the same trying to rent houses in Ireland. Oh yea 500 for the weeks plus £10 a day for utility's!! Just just the right bloody price

ohdizzy · 22/01/2023 19:18

Wouldn't mind the cleaning fee if they didn't expect you to empty the bins/strip the beds/leave the place cleaner than you found it!

They do, don't they? I use the app so maybe it's different but on the initial search results page there's the price per night and just underneath it has the total price for your booked dates (inc fees).

ZenNudist · 22/01/2023 19:20

Yes it's really annoying and I don't use them.

Ryanair have also pissed me off because on skyscanner its £100-£150 ppn return but you need to add £240 in baggage and seat costs. Am giving up on them.

piebald · 22/01/2023 19:24

I rent out holiday flats and from this side Airbnb are awful too, I don’t know why everyone uses them. It was way too complicated for me . All these companies Airbnb, booking .com , Holiday Leting, Trip Advisor add on massive ( usually 20%) onto your bill as well as taking a cut from the owners

dormouses · 22/01/2023 19:28

Airbnb is completely unregulated, I don't know why anyone uses them. Terrible for hosts and guests.

PacificallyRequested · 22/01/2023 19:33

It is ridiculous! I booked an Airbnb for a holiday in December, and cancelled it pretty much straight away when I realised how much the fees were. It ended up being cheaper going to a hotel.

makingarunforit · 22/01/2023 19:41

I was looking at AIRBNB yesterday and ended up booking a lovely hotel right in the centre of town instead. Some of the prices on AirBNB are ridiculous.

TheProblemIsMe · 22/01/2023 19:47

I just can't be bothered with AirBnB now, great in theory, shite in practice. Would rather use a hotel.

MissAmbrosia · 22/01/2023 19:56

I always use Booking.com and never Airbnb. Shysters.

yoshiblue · 22/01/2023 20:01

After having my Denmark accommodation cancelled by a host 2 weeks before our arrival after booking a year in advance - the only compensation was 10% off another booking. Not very handy when it's Danish bank holiday and no availability.

Was left scrabbling around to find something! And I couldn't leave a review as I never stayed! Never again, avoid them!!!

HermioneWeasley · 22/01/2023 20:02

I genuinely don’t know why anyone uses them - I’ve never looked without a hotel being a cheaper option.

ScarletWitchM · 22/01/2023 20:04

The pricing is a real frustration and now there are more ‘professional’ hosts the cleansing costs seem to be higher. But Air BnB is still good for us and much better than a hotel for us as a family with teenage kids that need their own rooms

Rubytoos · 22/01/2023 20:24

It’s just an age old marketing ploy to make you think prices are good value. Like a restaurant adding a service charge to your bill or charging you separately for the potatoes and veg to go with the main course.

booking. Com are just as bad- impossible to talk to a real person if you have a problem, as an owner they charge huge commission fees (which get passed on to renters in the form of cleaning fees or higher nightly rates).

Either book direct (you can reverse search the images to find the owner's websites) or use the many facebook direct booking groups. There are also smaller independent booking sites such as Gîtes.com and Gîtes.co.uk who are fair both to owners and renters

Wouldn't mind the cleaning fee if they didn't expect you to empty the bins/strip the beds/leave the place cleaner than you found it!

Cleanig fee 350. Please strip the beds and start laundry, take out trash, weed the garden, paint the roof and clean gutters...
Too bad it has gone this way, I had some lovely AirBnB stays years ago, but now most owners are just taking the piss and will mark down your rating for anything.

TheDogsMother · 22/01/2023 21:19

Airbnb is just a platform and it's individual owners who set cleaning fees. I have a small annexe on there and don't charge cleaning fees. I agree it should all be wrapped up in the overall price and don't understand why it's separate.

MrsMikeDrop · 22/01/2023 21:20

Agree. Wish it was all built into the price rather than at the end

TheDogsMother · 22/01/2023 21:21

Oh and I don't expect guests to strip beds, empty bins or anything. It's meant to be a holiday !

Oopswediditagain2023 · 22/01/2023 21:25

I agree - I've used it a couple of times but now use Sykes generally

spidereggs · 22/01/2023 21:32

Google the name of the place, the host name, contact them direct, fb search the property etc.

evemillbank · 22/01/2023 21:36

Airbnb are dead to me now. I'm back to hotels! I was never that keen but Airbnb is just not going on holiday anymore

DouglasTea · 22/01/2023 21:41

I despise the cleaning fee. What are you paying for if not the cleaning?

And I am an Airbnb host! I do not expect my guests to scrub the place and I do not charge a cleaning fee and I HATE renting through Airbnb (though they can be handy and they are VERY easy to deal with as a host)

Figgygal · 22/01/2023 21:43

I've just booked a week.in devon in summer holidays with no service fee or cleaning fee. They are out there
Not sure if it's because it looks like cottages for you use it as a platform?

Booksbythebed · 22/01/2023 21:58

Why do I like airbnb? (well, self catering in general)

Because i like to be able to cook on holiday (special diet so eating out not an option). Hard to find hotels with cooking and fridge facility.

With little kids being squished into a tiny hotel room is not fun. Interconnecting hotel rooms would be an amazing idea for families but those seem scarce too!

If the final price is good we book. We have never been asked to strip beds. We always leave places tidy.

We were once cancelled on 2 weeks before using vrbo, they were actually quite good about it and were able to book a more expensive place for the same price altho it was a bit of back and forth. Some owners are awful I guess but I am not sure they would be better behaved using another site.
