Summer 2024 can’t believe prices!!

I used to work in the travel industry many years ago, haven’t been abroad for a few years. Obvious reasons.

would really like a Europe beach holiday during school summer holiday 2024 I just can’t believe what you have to pay these days for a pretty standard AI week abroad 😮 well 10 days.
2 adults and 3 kids. Like £6000 plus!!

just talking it over really unless anyone has any great ideas ! Flying from pref Stansted.

@jellycakeandicecream good point to make. Thanks for that

I managed to get a self catering week in Greece for 4 adults for 1.5k in early July for this year. I thought that was pretty good!

Usernamen · 15/01/2023 12:36

The point about pent up demand is interesting. I would have thought that would have been and gone by 2024. We travelled as normal in summer 2021 (albeit with vaccine and Covid test requirements), 2022 (no requirements at all) and 2023 (“Covid, what Covid?”)

I can’t imagine people are delaying holidays until 2024, en masse, as in 2020 and maybe 2021. So I think it has to be something else.

Usernamen · 15/01/2023 12:37

*as in 2021 and maybe 2022, that should say

Ohhelpicantthinkofaname · 15/01/2023 14:43

I don’t generally look at holidays this far in advance as never book through the big names. But I know what my friend has booked for this year (booked last summer) and how much she paid. Just looked and their hotel and dates are £300 more per person than she paid this year! So looks like it’s all gone up.

I thought prices looked higher even for this summer than in previous year. But have managed to book a Greek island in the summer hols for essentially 4 adults b&b for £1800, which I thought wasn’t bad. Especially as it’s not one of the generally better value islands.

WinterFoxes · 15/01/2023 15:22

I agree prices are horrendous. A holiday I really wanted to do prior to first lockdown I have finally booked and it is double what it was.

Just go self-catering. Doesn't mean you have to cook every night. Go to restaurants, buy bread and rotisserie chicken or cheese or take outs.

workiskillingme · 15/01/2023 16:45

HandbagsnGladrags · 14/01/2023 08:55

To be fair that's only just £1000 each - it's not exactly astronomical.

Not to some people but to many others it's obscene

nc8975 · 15/01/2023 17:11

@WinterFoxes yes we have rebooked a 2020 holiday and it's 30% more and a downgraded hotel with less extras thrown in. We are also going to need to take much more spending money.

FettleOfKish · 15/01/2023 17:43

@Usernamen Bear in mind we're not the only nation that travels and some had tighter restrictions than others even up to Summer 2022, particularly for citizens that weren't vaccinated.

I do a little business with Germany and had terrible trouble trying to get availability in the Black Forest last summer as Germans were still holidaying within Germany in their masses.

FettleOfKish · 15/01/2023 17:46

@workiskillingme I suspect what Handbags and Gladrags meant is that £70 per person per night for bed, 3 meals a day and all drinks / snacks you could desire in a decent hotel with good facilities isn't a ridiculous amount to charge; not that £1000 isn't much money.

That's how I took it anyway.

NoraNancy · 15/01/2023 17:54

But there are cheaper ways to go abroad. We have an Airbnb apartment for 4 in Lake Garda, shared pool,

1 week, late July £950. Plus return flights £100 each. I always book well in advance, will eat out etc. Eurocamp - look at other companies eg Lifestyle for same sites but cheaper. Also much cheaper to use sites in late August , eg 9 nights starting 22/8

JanuaryBlues2023 · 15/01/2023 17:56

@Ohhelpicantthinkofaname please can you pm me details please and have you booked there before?

WildFlowerBees · 15/01/2023 17:58

Isn't it supply and demand though especially during school holidays? If people stopped going on holiday for a few years the industry would need to change. 10 days AI for 6k sounds high especially given it's usually mass produced food that's not really very nice.

FettleOfKish · 15/01/2023 18:06

@WildFlowerBees People just did stop going on holiday, for two years. The industry has changed to a model of desperately trying to scrabble back their mind-blowing losses throughout the pandemic, while building enough of a cash balance back up to catch up on all the maintenance and refurbishment they didn't / couldn't afford to do during that time - and which people now complain about more than ever.

A curious by-product of no travel for a while is that people's expectations have absolutely sky-rocketed. In 20 years I've never received as many ridiculous petty complaints as I have in the last 12 months.

Wow those flights are amazing

Ohhelpicantthinkofaname · 15/01/2023 18:10

@JanuaryBlues2023

im happy to, but I booked 10 days ago for the cheapest price I’ve ever seen for something I wanted on that island. The price of the holiday had shot up by £500 2 days later. I was just very lucky I Guess. I booked through on the beach, who I’ve used several times before and there are still some good deals, but not as good as the one I got.

I’ve not been there before and it’s a bit out the way, but looks beautiful. I’ve already reserved a car through a local company to get out and about. Happy to send details if you would still like me to.

Babyroobs · 15/01/2023 18:14

We paid similar about 5 years ago for AI in Tenerife so not that different. It was only for a week though.

BigBangSmallBang · 15/01/2023 18:17

HandbagsnGladrags · 14/01/2023 08:55

It’s the fact you are paying this and all piled into one room though. Plus with lots of these sites you can’t see what the bed setup is. So could be one double bed and a couple of uncomfortable pull out trundle beds. Now my children are teens we need a proper bed per person.

JanuaryBlues2023 · 15/01/2023 18:54

Yes please.

babyyodaxmas · 15/01/2023 20:10

Just back from skiing in Japan for 10 days for that. Crazy price for a European beach holiday.

Yellowtrouser · 15/01/2023 20:15

Try Bulgaria rather than Spain/ Greee etc. Tends to be a bit less expensive.

Purplemagnolias · 15/01/2023 20:22

You'd save a lot of money by self catering!

All inclusive for 5 of you will always be very expensive

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 15/01/2023 21:44

We did all inclusive for me, DH and then 6 year old dd to Crete for £5k for a week. That was in 2018. Went to corfu last year same group but dd now 9 and it was about £3k

Daydre4mer · 15/01/2023 22:32

@Purplemagnolias yes I know. I just like the fact Us and the kids can eat whatever and almost whenever we want. No washing up!! No decisions on what to eat. They always try lots of different things when it’s AI which is nice.

it’s the novelty of how ever many icecreams they want and drinks etc.

MamaSeeSaw · 04/03/2023 12:47

I’m booked in to go there for June (taking the kids out of school for a week otherwise the price is just crazy and a no go) booked early bird and all together with direct flights and the accommodation it’s for us £1000 - fingers crossed it’s as amazing as it look
