EasyJet or Ryanair?

Need to choose between the two and would appreciate any recent experiences. Ryanair has a historically awful reputation but I have heard that's not been too bad in recent years. Would be to Europe from Manchester or East Midlands. Thanks in advance

That's like asking do you want your left or right leg amputated. Both options are shit.

PAFMO · 16/12/2022 06:09

Regularly use both. Never had a problem in recent years with either.
The one flight I remember thinking was like going back to the 70s was easyJet Lisbon- LGW this summer. I'd never do that route again with them.
Ryanair marginally more likely to be on time.
I've flown 12 times this year with one or the other.
easyJet is always my first port of call when searching, but simply because Stansted is further from me than LGW and the routes I want tend to be out of LGW.
Wouldn't hesitate to use either though.

Yes, it's worth noting any additional transport costs outside of the flight. No point getting a cheaper flight from Luton if it's going to cost you 50 to get to Luton.

Had a shocking experience with Ryanair, complaint lodged as it was incredibly dangerous.
EasyJet seem to be better managed and I will use them for v.short haul such as Amsterdam. However if I can't afford to travel on a non budget I've decided I won't go on holiday as Ryan air was not worth the drama

Go easyJet. I had 4 flights £500 booked with Ryanair for my birthday holiday- kids caught chickenpox so we had to cancel. Had doctors note, photos of spots etc and they gave me a voucher that had to be spent within 6 months which wasn't going to be possible- I immediately tried to extend it/push for a refund but they basically just ignored me and sent me on tedious wild goose chases and we ultimately lost it :/

Isn't that what travel insurance is for?

I wouldn't expect airline to refund for that, and a voucher was quite generous in the circumstances.

Chersfrozenface · 16/12/2022 07:19

Last summer Ryanair flight was delayed by 7 hours. No apology, no compensation as in per EU rules, no response of any kind. Complaint is now with CAA which has also not responded.

Never flying Ryanair again.

Paris14eme · 16/12/2022 07:22

EasyJet. No question.

Aphidsandhoneybees · 16/12/2022 07:25

I’ve used both fairly regularly, Ryanair seems have more flights to the places I want to go and for a 2 or 3 hour flight they are bearable. But I would say flying with EasyJet is much more enjoyable. The staff seem to be better trained and the planes I have been on recently are superior to Ryanair in terms of both cleanliness and decor.

gogohmm · 16/12/2022 07:50

EasyJet I find slightly better, but check carefully which airport, Ryan air often uses different airports to others

FermisLeftFoot · 16/12/2022 07:52

Well Easyjet just cancelled flights for a long awaited school trip, the only one my son could have gone on since the other trips were cancelled due to Covid. No replacements and any other flights are insanely expensive so the trip had to be cancelled and that’s 60 kids on a block booking they’ve let down.

Therefore Easyjet’s name is mud in my house!

rookiemere · 16/12/2022 07:56

@FermisLeftFoot yes Easyjet does seem to be having a lot of cancellations.I have to say I'm not totally convinced our summer trip to Jersey will take place as it doesn't seem to be a popular route, so I've booked the much more expensive cancellable hotel rooms, just in case.

If I had a choice I'd fly Jet2. The staff are so lovely and it felt like a nice experience with them, but their flights are very pricey.

The fanfare and applause on landing with Ryanair puts me off thought not flown with them in years so it could have changed. Flying and landing the plane is literally the basic requirement for an airline so it freaks me out.

They haven't done this on any of the flights that I've taken with Ryanair this year.

When they're on form Ryanair works well and has some good routes, as does EasyJet. So for me I'd go for the one that has the most convenient flight time.

Powerplant · 16/12/2022 08:18

EasyJet every time. The only time we had problems with a less than smooth landing was with Ryanair - my partner refuses to fly with them. Pre covid used to have a holiday home abroad so plenty of flight experience and always found everything just ran smoothly with them.

MajorCarolDanvers · 16/12/2022 08:23

I'd avoid Ryanair. If something goes wrong they are awful and do nothing.

If it's a short flight, insurance will cost more than the flight.

It's a budget airline.

I'm the same. I like a mid morning/early afternoon flight. They can be very expensive.

formulatingAresponse · 16/12/2022 08:29

I've never used Ryanair and despite a monumental cock up where we were nearly stranded with EasyJet I found the staff to be ok and things did work out for us but not for all.

They were dishing out immediate quite large sums of compensation for those willing to sacrifice their seat

unpocamasporfavor · 16/12/2022 08:59

We generally use Ryanair as they fly from our local airport. They're ok. Basic as anything but we've never had any major issues with them.
I hate their website, but I'm sure the EJ website would be just as shite...

TizerorFizz · 16/12/2022 09:17

Both awful. Have used both. DD1 still
uses EJ. She hasn’t had issues but other DD did. DH and me avoid them. We can easily get to Heathrow, so we do. Luton is the same journey time but it’s not T5!

SaveMeCheezus · 16/12/2022 16:59

@rookiemere Please don't worry; I'm in Jersey and we all use easyJet regularly as they're our biggest provider; I've never been on an easyJet flight to or from the island that's not at least 85% full and while they sometimes tweak their schedules or amalgamate flights it's rare for them to cancel unless it's weather related.

Which airport are you coming in from if you don't mind me asking?

rookiemere · 16/12/2022 17:03

@SaveMeCheezus we will be flying Edinburgh to Jersey in the summer holidays as DS is off to South Africa on school rugby tour.

SaveMeCheezus · 16/12/2022 17:04

@rookiemere Jersey is poorly served from Scotland compared to years gone (yet very popular with Scots) so I wouldn't worry.

Have a great time here and let me know if you have any questions - tourism is my trade so I hope I can answer anything!

Calminacrisis · 16/12/2022 17:08

Easyjet. They were not fantastic regarding cancellations and refunds during covid and we had a bad experience with a cancellation this summer… however, Ryanair, who fly to a location we go to several times a year and should be the logical choice, are diabolical. My bags never made it on our last flight and they simply don’t acknowledge their legal responsibility to passengers and couldn’t give a shit about customer service.

Datgal · 30/12/2022 21:17

Yep, ryanair flew throughout the pandemic. That was because they didn't want to cancel flights and therefore have to refund anyone! Lost flights this way. Greedy bastards. Govt said don't fly, but RA flew anyway (and a lot would have been empty-how is that right?). I'm never using them again.

MrsDrDear · 30/12/2022 21:42

In the past I would have said easyJet but they have recently cancelled my flight and other family flights for different destinations, no explanation last minute. Happening too often with them now.

I found this for June 2022, easyJet cancellations were over 700 and Ryanair was only 27.
