Never been to NYC but thinking of planning a trip for Sept 2023. Have 3 teenage boys. What hotels do you love? Thanks

Edison 1000000%

What can you afford? Crosby Street Hotel. Kit Kemp design in New York. It’s brilliant. The Whitby is wonderful too.,

AttilaTheMeerkat · 27/11/2022 10:15

What is your ideal budget per night?. That and hotel's location are far more important considerations rather than just asking what hotels people love in NYC.

If you have three teenage boys and have never been there before I would choose to stay in Midtown rather than say in the Financial District. We've always liked the Hilton New York Times Square on West 42nd Street for instance.

Shouldershoddy · 27/11/2022 10:17

We stayed at Edison …literally one minute walk off Times Square. Absolutely perfect but we did ask for a better room when we arrived because the rooms were being updated .

MissDollyMix · 27/11/2022 10:19

We stayed at the mint house aparthotel recently. It was lovely and the apartments were so spacious and well equipped. It’s in the financial district which isn’t midtown but very close to the occulus/9/11 site and the building itself is literally opposite a subway stop- we very quickly got used to zipping all over Manhattan and Brooklyn on that.

whiteroseredrose · 27/11/2022 10:34

We stayed in a hotel called the Giraffe.

It was really central and had drinks and snacks in the lobby at 5pm!

Twiglets1 · 27/11/2022 10:50

Crosby street hotel is fabulous but pricey

TizerorFizz · 27/11/2022 14:46

@Twiglets1
Thats why I asked about budget! We’ve stayed at hotels with nibbles and drinks at 5 but we were never at the hotel at that time so a pointless “perk”. Being near Times Square is a dubious perk too. It’s fairly horrible. It’s far better to decide what you want to see and do and choose location based on that. SoHo is cooler than Midtown. Midtown is more touristy than the Financial District and more convenient for some things, but not others. You don’t want to be on the clunky subway all the time either. So pick out what you want to see and what location suits those choices.

Susieblue18 · 27/11/2022 20:42

Thanks all. We would want to see all the usual attractions so not sure of best location. A lot of hotels I’ve looked at seem to be in the Times Square area but not sure if this is the best place to stay. Budget probably around £500 per night but we might need 2 rooms if there are no rooms for 5.

The knickerbocker is amazing. It's by Times Square and it has a really cool rooftop bar.

TizerorFizz · 28/11/2022 00:02

A single Room for 5 is difficult. Try a suite. Or try somewhere like Cittadines. Often you get 2 double beds in a room so 2 rooms are ok for 5.

IncessantNameChanger · 28/11/2022 00:09

We also stayed in the Eddison. It's perfect for location.

Also stayed in the Marriot Times Square. The view from the restaurant is just amazing. But pricey no doubt.

We recently stayed at the Hampton Inn (hilton chain) in downtown brooklyn which is walkable into DUMBO district, short distance from the brooklyn Bridge and 8 mins walk from DeKalb subway Station. Loads of good places to eat nearby although one night we stayed out in Chinatown having walked from our hotel all over financial district and up. Excellent free tea and coffee 24h and free breakfast. It's 30 mins on the subway as far as columbus circle.

Brooklyn is great for access to financial district (downtown and DUMBO) or Williamsberg is easy access towards Chinatown little italu and soho. I never made it to Williamsberg so hoping to go back.

Midtown is obviously easy to go in either direction. I've never made it higher than top of Central Park but youre going to want to gk to the financial district and do the staten island ferry plus wesg to hudskn yards, the high libe and Chelsea. We stayed in Hilton New York Times Square on West 42nd Street but still ended up on and off the subway to get about as you're going to want to go all over.

I'd really recommend brooklyn Bridge and DUMBO as an essential thing to do in NYC. Do the walk across the bridge early before crowds build up.

Try and book to see a play at the shed. That looks cool.

I'm going back in October taking dc Currently booked into the time square hilton but thinking to change back to Hampton Inn not sure yet.

Edison and Mint House look fab.

A two bedroom apartment would be fab, very expensive though.

The knickerbocker is amazing. It's by Times Square and it has a really cool rooftop bar.

I had that booked to go this year but had to cancel because they hadn't yet relaxed covid rules. Cannot afford it now (booked mid covid so good price)

crispinglovershighkick · 28/11/2022 01:36

The Shelburne is good value. The location is good for us, but it's not especially glamorous.

Lozzybear · 28/11/2022 04:42

Conrad Downtown. Their rooms sleep five. It’s in the financial district overlooking the Hudson. Much nicer than the area around Times Square.

Neverplayleapfrogwithmrpipes · 28/11/2022 05:39

The walcott

Lobelia123 · 28/11/2022 05:49

We've stayed in New York twice and on our way for a third time. The first time we stayed at the New Yorker, which we loved - enjoyed the art deco architecture, history of the hotel, the glorious Tick Tock diner and the location. Second time we had a very tight budget so stayed in a Holiday Inn in Union City - huge rooms, swimming pool and very cheap - and caught the bus through the tunnel to the city every day. It added travel time to the days but was a lot of fun in a Working Girl kind of way and gave us a great taste of life outside the big city for ordinary working people - discovered some gems of local restaurants and had wonderful walks exploring there too. This time we're somewhere inbetween and thinking of trying one of the pod hotels - Yotel specifically. Our son is in his teens now, needs his own space and loves the concept and look and feel.

TizerorFizz · 28/11/2022 09:40

The New Yorker is now used by interns and is a budget option.

allfurcoatnoknickers · 28/11/2022 18:54

The Peninsula - spent my wedding night there and The Conrad in Battery Park City, where I once spent 2 weeks when an apartment renovation went awry. I live in NYC, DH works in the luxury travel business, and I used to be a high-end event planner, so we've done site visits at just about every possible type of hotel in the city.

I bet you'd like the Yotel - they have rooms designed for families to stay in and it's pretty 'cool" for teenage boys. Near Times Square but you don't actually have to stay in Times Square, which is good, because it's a revolting dump filled with pick-pockets and scammers. Avoid.

Lobelia123 · 29/11/2022 06:40

Thank you @allfurcoatnoknickers for the input re the Yotel - sounds fun!

RockaLock · 29/11/2022 06:54

We stayed in the Refinery Hotel, which was lovely. It has a nice roof garden. It's about halfway between the Empire State Building and Central Park.

GrohlOnAPole · 12/12/2022 00:17

I like Distrikt hotel.

The Manhattan at Times Square is pretty much the worst I’ve ever stayed at, absolutely horrid. Avoid!

Thanks4allthefish · 12/12/2022 00:20

Waldorf - it was being refitted so don’t know If it’s open again
