Never been to NYC but thinking of planning a trip for Sept 2023. Have 3 teenage boys. What hotels do you love? Thanks

We stayed in the Refinery Hotel, which was lovely. It has a nice roof garden. It's about halfway between the Empire State Building and Central Park.

The Refinery is lovely. I visited friends who were staying there and when I walked into the lobby, it smelt so good! I would have been quite happy sitting in the lobby with a book and glass of wine all evening. The rooms are a good size for Manhattan and the rooftop restaurant/bar is very pleasant indeed. Other friends have also stayed at The Refinery and were very positive. It seems to be a favourite for my friends with 2 teenage children (more complicated with 3 for the OP as 2 rooms will definitely be over budget).

We stayed at mint house with 3 dc (20, 18, 9) this summer. Absolutely huge space, and well worth the ££.
Have a girls trip planned and this time we are using placemakr which is also financial district, and looks to have a similar set up.
Tbh, times square is a bit of a mare, super busy and noisy. Financial district is easy access to Brooklyn bridge, occulus, freedom tower, 9/11 memorial, Staten Island ferry etc.
For other areas, the subway is easy to navigate and you can get multi-day tickets.
Your dc might enjoy a graffiti tour of Brooklyn which we really enjoyed, and made a change from all the "queue, shuffle, queue" attractions like empire state building.

These are mid town a most NY hotel rooms are small so you don't expect huge ones

The Algonquin for atmosphere/history/bar
The Warwick has some big rooms on the top floors - some with balconies

The Kitano - the biggest selling point is that all its rooms are fully soundproofed.

New York really is the city that never sleeps and it's noisy all night long - even if you have a room on a very high floor. The traffic/sirens never stop

Add that to jet lag and you'll be glad of a room you can actually sleep in.

Otherwise you are going to need really good war plugs. The wax ones are the best.

I worked there a lot and would often stay in serviced apartments- they are that much bigger - but I was normally staying for at least 2 weeks so it mattered.

I was surprised to find the Kitano still offers smoking rooms apparently.

We stated at the Conrad downtown. Right by the 9/11 museum and a nice walk down to the Staten Island ferry terminal. We absolutely loathed Times Square and the area around it - DD stayed there recently and said the open drug use/pick pocketing was horrendous and they didn't feel safe walking around there. They moved hotels 2 days in.
