why do holiday companies think a teen wants to sleep on a sofa for 2 weeks?

Trying to look for suitable accommodation for a family holiday for 2 x adults and 3 x teenage children. Kids happy to share.

Do you think I can find a triple room with three PROPER BEDS?? All the rooms marketed as family rooms or triple rooms have two proper beds, and either a z-bed or sofa bed. Fine for a 5 or 6 year old. Not fine for a 15 or 16 year old.

You need 3 bedrooms if you don’t want someone on a sofa bed.

FamilyTreeBuilder · 31/10/2022 14:20

3 kids isn't that unusual, there must be a demand for a triple room. Obviously paying for 3 separate rooms is an option, but one which costs £££.

Where are you looking to book @FamilyTreeBuilder - which country and when? Perhaps we can help find something - the wizardry of MN at its best 👌

TakeTheEgg · 31/10/2022 14:21

.... and quite frankly I'm bored, so give me something to do 😅

FlounderingFruitcake · 31/10/2022 14:23

Why is a sofa bed not ok for a teen? Often they are doubles whilst the beds are singles so I would have thought they are the more desirable option! I’m going away with friends in the new year and someone will be on the sofa bed, and we are all early 30s, I don’t mind if it’s me!

sevenbyseven · 31/10/2022 14:24

Try booking privately owned apartments via Air BnB or similar. Much easier to find 3 bedroom apartments that way. Obviously no good if you want a package holiday though.

FamilyTreeBuilder · 31/10/2022 14:24

Around 12th July for 10 or 14 days, all inclusive. Not Tunisia, Turkey, Egypt. Not Ibiza. We were in Menorca this year so not there. Flying from Manchester/Liverpool/Newcastle (we are from Scotland but it's usually cheaper to fly from down south when the schools haven't broken up yet). At least a 4 star Tripadvisor.

Croatia - this was a quick search before I saw your last update with requirements.......

But gives 3 double rooms - I guessed ages of kids .....

Lots of sofa beds are actually full sized single beds with the back cushions off rather than the fold out type so are fine for teens. We had them this year in Ibiza and Majorca and previously in the Algarve. Booking.com is useful for seeing what the bed situation is even if you don’t book through them

maddiemookins16mum · 31/10/2022 14:40

Try Atlantic Hotels, they are Greece and Cyprus. They are fabulous, do all inclusive and have options for rooms to have a double bed plus two proper single beds which may solve your 2nd room for the three kids issue. So one double room for you, the second room with another double plus two proper beds (it’s a family suite room).

Oblomov22 · 31/10/2022 14:42

I hate his too. I don't want a sofa bed. I want a proper bed. For ds1 and ds2, or for me when I go away with friends. I'd rather pay more, to get a proper bed. But that option is rarely available.

Fairylightsongs · 31/10/2022 14:44

It as a double is the most common request and they can configure the room for two or three. Two people don’t usually want to stay in a room with a random third bed, but they do a room with a sofa.

those with three full beds will be few and far between and often either very low end or high end. Other than that yoire looking at three rooms or suites.

Arayes · 31/10/2022 14:49

They don't think a teen wants to. They think that it works for them, and thats what they care about. It's called being a business.

I don't see a problem with the sofa bed, you just get the three kids to rotate and all take a go. Or pay more to get whatever it is you want.

I got a hotel 2 weeks ago with a triple room, three single beds. Wasn't hard.

gogohmm · 31/10/2022 14:53

I've stayed in lots of triple rooms, we had one this summer (used the spare bed for suitcases as we didn't need it) but we book independently

Roselilly36 · 31/10/2022 15:10

You just need to pay for extra bedrooms, it will cost more of course. But that is what we do.

FamilyTreeBuilder · 31/10/2022 15:39

I think we need to have a serious chat with the kids about what their priorities are. We do not have a limitless budget, and if one of them is happy with a sofa bed then great - more money to spend on day trips, meals out.

Go on trip adviser and look at photos of the rooms. Most hotels say it's a sofa bed, but some actually have proper single beds and huge rooms, like the one we stayed at in Tenerife earlier this year

eurochick · 31/10/2022 16:06

What's wrong with a sofa bed? I'd happily sleep on one if someone else was paying for my holiday.

Kite22 · 31/10/2022 16:19

Because very often families would rather have the option of that, than have to pay for a third beroom.

This is what i've been doing. Some are proper full size singles with a hard base and decent mattress, others aren't. And often it's hard to judge from the pictures they give you.

Here www.los-jameos.com/rooms/family-room ?
Granted third bed doesn't look quite as comfortable but does look like a proper bed. We stayed here in October 4 star, lovely hotel.

PinkSyCo · 31/10/2022 18:20

Bloody hell I slept on my bumpy old sofa for 7 years, as an adult. A proper sofa bed or a zed bed would have felt like pure luxury to me! 😂

Georgyporky · 31/10/2022 18:29

If it's a sofa, when it's turned into a bed it will be a double.
What's the problem with that?

underneaththeash · 31/10/2022 19:55

Our kids just take it in turns to use the sofa bed. So on a 14 night holiday, they’d each sleep in the sofa bed for 4/5 nights. We ask the hotel to change the sheets in between.

BritWifeInUSA · 02/11/2022 02:28

Is the 15-year-old the youngest/smallest? If not, put the youngest/smallest on the sofa bed. I guess the reason many hotels offer them is because it’s unusual (in my experience) for older teens to still go away with parents. We all stopped going on family holidays when we were about 14. So hotels anticipate the third child would be much younger.
