If you were renting a self catering cottage, how would you feel about this?

The owner/agent popping round during the first couple of days in your stay to check everything is ok?

Would you find it intrusive? Would you prefer an email/text or just to be left alone?

I’m curious as this came up while talking to a friend who manages a holiday rental and apparently that’s part of what she has to do. I said I’d find it a bit annoying for them to visit but maybe that’s just me.

Would hate it! A message is sufficient.

DressEmergency · 02/10/2022 17:39

I would bloody hate it. It would put me off booking

Hoolihan · 02/10/2022 17:39

Would prefer a text, it might feel like the owner was checking up on you if they turned up in person..

WallaceinAnderland · 02/10/2022 17:39

I would not want to see or hear from them but to be able to contact them if there was a problem.

This, right?! I thought exactly the same thing.

I would find it intrusive

Glitterspy · 02/10/2022 17:40

I’d always prefer to be left alone.

Oncemoreforluck · 02/10/2022 17:40

Hate it. Just leave me a mobile number that I can contact you on please should I have any problems.

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 02/10/2022 17:41

I'd hate that, would put me right off.

A text would be fine.

Thurst · 02/10/2022 17:41

No I’d hate that. Quick text to see if everything is okay is more than enough.

BestIsWest · 02/10/2022 17:41

I would hate it. Leave me a number to phone in case something goes wrong.

ladywithnomanors · 02/10/2022 17:41

Annoying! Though an email to contact them on would be useful. I stayed at an Airbnb and couldn’t get the Wi-Fi to work. The owners didn’t reply to any messages I sent.

Teenyliving · 02/10/2022 17:41

Ugh. Last thing I’d want to do is make an effort to small talk with a stranger. I would appreciate a text that didn’t require a response

AtrociousCircumstance · 02/10/2022 17:42

Would absolutely hate it.

topcat2014 · 02/10/2022 17:42

If they say hello on arrival that is nice. Beyond that, unless there is an issue I don't expect to see them.

Mind there are probably CF out there who complain on checkout expecting money back.

Calling round part way stops that happening

Cheeselog · 02/10/2022 17:42

I wouldn’t like it. I don’t even want a text. If there’s a problem then I’ll contact them.

mast0650 · 02/10/2022 17:43

I wouldn't hate it, especially if they lived nearby anyway so it seemed natural. It could be nice depending on the person. But I think a text is fine and clearly lots of people prefer it!

bellac11 · 02/10/2022 17:43

I'd hate it.

I cant even stand it when they meet you on arrival, I like to just have the key left for me

Last thing I want to do after a knackering journey is be walked around a bijou cottage to be shown where the toilet and back door is. I can work that out for myself, I just want a cuppa and to shut my eyes!!!

Saucery · 02/10/2022 17:43

I thought I would dislike this, but when we did stay at a cottage where the owner came round on the first full day she was actually really nice. I didn’t get the impression she was checking up on us at all and she made a huge fuss of our dog. Gave us loads of info about the area.
Been met with the key at other properties too, also fine.
I do prefer properties where the owner isn’t next door/onsite and there is a key box entry, though.

Inklingpot · 02/10/2022 17:44

She has a mobile that they can contact her on and she said she can send a text but apparently the owner thinks it’s a nice touch.

Being a misanthrope myself, I immediately said I hated the thought of a stranger rocking up at the door when I’m on holiday!

Intrusive except literally on arrival.
Text or email at the beginning is fine but this is usually covered in the pre-visit info so not strictly necessary.

TheArtfulStodger · 02/10/2022 17:47

It would put me off ever returning, and my review would reflect my feelings on this too.

I absolutely do not cope with strangers when I'm doing my own thing. Not great with people at the rest of the time either but this would be so intrusive.

DisforDarkChocolate · 02/10/2022 17:48

I'd be fine as long as they didn't just walk in.

C152 · 02/10/2022 17:54

I'd find it annoying an intrusive. As long as guests have a contact number where they can reach the owner if they need to, they should be left in peace to enjoy their holiday.
