Different or weird, non walking things to do in NYC

Myself and a friend are doing a 3 week tour of the US in a month. We have 5 days in NYC. We have both already been a couple of times and have already done all the big/main attractions.

When we booked it months ago we were planning on just walking the city without plans and just doing whatever took our fancy at the time, however my friend has now severely injured herself and can not walk far at all. 5 days of wandering aimlessly won’t happen.

I don’t want to spend money on the things we have already seen. She won’t be able to walk around the museums for hours either I would imagine. I have bought tickets to a few broadways shows, but still have lots of time to fill!

Any suggestions of some different “sitting” type activities? The other cities we are visiting we haven’t been to before, so we’ve booked a lot of bus and guided type tours, but I’m now stuck with what to do in New York!

Take the subway to Coney Island

Take the free ferry to state island

mackthepony · 29/09/2022 01:48

Treatballs · 29/09/2022 01:52

Thank you :)

NBA/ice hockey/baseball game.
Jazz club.
Double decker bus tour.
The cable car - is it Roosevelt Island?
Central Park - rowboat on the lake, cyclo tour, set up a picnic and people watch!

If you're not already locked into accommodation, what about a 2 day tour out to Niagara falls? There'll be lots of sitting in buses, boats, planes etc.

Treatballs · 29/09/2022 02:00

Ohhh good ideas thank you! I’d forgotten about a sports game! Last time we went we had baseball tickets booked but we were both too hungover to go 🥴

unfortunately we are already locked into our accommodation.

Any favourite TV shows filmed in NYC that you can do the coach tours for? Have done Gossip Girl and Sex and the City - both were brilliant.

blisstwins · 29/09/2022 02:07

AIA do a great architecture/ history tour

www.aiany.org/architecture/tours/boat-tours/
maybe rush tickets to the ballet or opera?

happyharpy78 · 29/09/2022 03:02

We did a couple of comedy clubs last time we went.

Rainbowqueeen · 29/09/2022 03:45

Boat cruise on the Hudson river
Harlem church visit- gospel tour
“On location” tours do specialist tours relating to movies and tv shows eg Sex and the City
Bus tour of Brooklyn
Also worth checking with museums about disabled access/ wheelchair loan if she is willing to do that
AIRE ancient baths - thermal pools
target sone particular restaurants that are well known and people watch

Treatballs · 29/09/2022 04:17

These are all brilliant ideas! Thank you all so much!

My 18yo has just come back, he loved playing chess in Washington Square.

itsthesoundofthepolice · 29/09/2022 04:33

Definitely the bus tours just stay on for the full route and get off where you start. The one over the Brooklyn is good and kills a few hours

Longdistance · 29/09/2022 04:51

Staten Island ferry is free.

There’s a great comedy club on 75th West. We say Chris Rock there as a surprise guest. You never know who’s going to come on.

Stopsnowing · 29/09/2022 04:58

Do the circle line. Take a bus like the M1 the whole route

neerg · 29/09/2022 05:08

We took a ferry to Rockaway beach. The beach on itself was okay but the journey on the boat was lovely, you go pasty Coney Island etc. I think the ferry only goes on Weekends.

maddy68 · 29/09/2022 05:56

Red bus tour (3 day pass ). Ferry to staton island , horse and carriage around times Square. Broadway shows
You can still do the empire state world trade centre

Pre book tickets to avoid waiting

Taxis everywhere

mustbefunny · 29/09/2022 05:59

SNFL (library) rooftop terrace - loads of events, great location, fully accessible

Treatballs · 29/09/2022 07:35

Thank you so much everyone. While I am here I have a day in LA to fill if anyone has any suggestions 😅 with the caveat of we will be tired! We land at 7am but can’t check into our hotel until 3pm.

not really interested in the Hollywood/stars homes bus tours and that’s all that seems to be being suggested to me on trip advisor.

Where in LA are you staying?

Treatballs · 29/09/2022 08:08

Hollywood, ironically 🤣
but we don’t need to do things there, just something needed to kill time between landing and check in to hotel.

my original plan was mooching about Venice beach and boardwalk and Santa Monica pier, but don’t think my friend will be able to walk it.

accessiblego.com/articles/48_Hours_in_Los_Angeles

Hope this link works. It’s things to do with 48 hours in LA if you have accessibility issues. Mentions that Venice beach has free wheelchairs that can go in the sand.

I haven’t read the whole article but also refers to sone eateries.
Id go to Venice beach if you can. The people watching is great.

Tenement museum in NYC

HolidayHappy123 · 29/09/2022 09:20

The Ride is a different type of bus tour in NYC. It’s entertainment rather than sightseeing and great fun.

Icedlatteplease · 29/09/2022 09:23

Can you borrow a mobility scooter?
