Or am I just being overprotective?

No, mine didn't.

did I miss the reason no-one else responded? Sounds like a reasonable question to me!

CaptainCod · 25/01/2008 19:50

no but only because it's not got the same falling potential as a bike. ie its easier to put your foot out to stop you falling on your head!

hercules1 · 25/01/2008 19:53

Yes

kindersurprise · 25/01/2008 19:57

yes, because if they do fall off, then they a can be going pretty fast.

Slightly biased on helmet questions as 2 of my neighbours children have knocked teeth out falling off bikes. They were lucky that they were wearing helmets otherwise the damage could have been worse.

WestCountryLass · 25/01/2008 20:48

Yes, I used to work for a head injury therapy unit and a young lad came off his scooter and hit his head and was in a bad way so I made a note to myself that when I had kids they would wear a helmet.

Astrophe · 25/01/2008 20:54

yes. It take me about 3 seconds to fasten my DD's helmet - whats the faff? Takes me longer to put her coat on, but I wouldn't send her out without a coat.

nannyL · 27/01/2008 12:58

yes

my best friend would be DEAD if it wasnt for helmet which was smashed to pieces in her crash!

Ok it was a bike but if you have a helmet why not wear it??

LIZS · 27/01/2008 13:10

yes unless they are on grass in the garden.

TartWithAHeart · 28/01/2008 09:27

4 no's and 7 yes's. It's a yes then. Which is what I thought anyway, but have seen lots of kids with no helmets on scooters - and I think they go quite fast actually.

Twiglett · 28/01/2008 09:33

no mine doesn't and he's 7 now

CaptainCod · 28/01/2008 09:35

NO NO NO
NO ONE DOES

MN IS NOT REAL LIFE

Cappuccino · 28/01/2008 09:36

I'd say yes just to get them into habit for bikes

chocolateteapot · 28/01/2008 09:39

Mine is the same age and doesn't. I don't think I have ever seen anyone with a helmet on a scooter round here.

Twiglett · 28/01/2008 09:40

In RL you look at kids in full protective gear on scooters and think 'PFB'

andiemustlosehalfastonemore · 28/01/2008 09:41

no mine doesn't

Vacua · 28/01/2008 09:45

yes definitely - would have said no before striking up friendship with a paediatrician who tells me horrible stories about patients in intensive care who have hit their head on a kerb or just a concrete path and died or have little hope of making a meaningful recovery. descriptions of brain swelling too graphic for me.

or neck SNAPPING in car because seat belt not adjusted properly

you're slightly more likely to fall off a scooter than to just trip up and bump your head aren't you?

tarantula · 28/01/2008 09:48

dd (4.1) No not on a scooter unless she insists (which does sometimes) On her bike yes

She insisted on full padding the other week too when she went on her pedal bike for the first time. She did look funny esp as the paddign is skateboard padding designed for an older child. Still she thought she looked great. Apparently having padding on means she can practice her skids

Twiglett · 28/01/2008 09:49

do you put helmets on them when they climb trees? what about when they play 'It'?

shabster · 28/01/2008 09:49

YES YES YES If I could get away with it my 10 yr old DS would wear a safety helmet all day - OK I am a 'neurotic older mother' as my doctor once called me.

Think it is good for children to get used to wearing them when they are on bikes, scooters etc etc.

If I had insisted on my 3rd DS wearing one - he would be here today! That guilt never ever goes away x

CaptainCod · 28/01/2008 09:49

mine dont really go fast r ner the M5 whe on scooters

CaptainCod · 28/01/2008 09:50

the shame of a doctor teling you you are neuriotic

Vacua · 28/01/2008 09:54

I'm not neurotic, all my anxiety has been induced by hearing in ghastly detail about these freak accidents - but in a way it's like being struck by lightning isn't it, your child's actual chances of being seriously injured are probably really slim.

I just get an icky queasy feeling when they're zipping about on tarmac whether on skates, scooters or bikes. Roll on adolescence for my youngest when she can sit still in the playground, drinking vodka.
