New York...then where? In August with teens

Hi all

So next summer we'd love to spend 4 nights in New York, then travel somewhere for 10 nights relaxing around a pool and on the beach in the sun. Any recommendations on where would be best?

I keep looking at Miami, but will that be too hot!? Looking for somewhere with a beautiful beach front location, but somewhere which the teenage dd's will also enjoy, and plenty of choice of family friendly (not too fancy!) restaurants close by?

Looking to stay on the east coast of the USA ideally, as want to save California/San Francisco etc for it's own big trip one day :)

Thanks in advance!

What about a cruise? My son and family live in New York and have had some lovely cruise holidays. I don’t know where they go from though but I’m sure google will bring up a few ideas.

rubyslippers · 20/09/2022 15:50

New York can be tremendously hot and humid in august !
from there you can take a flight anywhere in the US - what about Hawaii?
Miami / Florida will be hot but if you’re on the beach it’s more managable

Buttons294749 · 20/09/2022 15:51

NY will be unbearable then !

Fgsvirgin · 20/09/2022 15:53

Clearwater/St Pete’s Beach might tick the boxes for you (although it will be hot).

I second a cruise (to Bahamas). From either NY or Florida (if you want less days at sea).

JenJones5 · 20/09/2022 15:56

If you are concerned about the heat then don’t go to New York In August.

ThisUserNameIsAvailableOk · 20/09/2022 15:56

"NY will be unbearable then !"

Depends on your definition of unbearable. I preferred it in August and it was hot but it's easy to get shade in NYC. Washington DC was very hot at around 38-40 degrees but even that wasn't unbearable

MelbourneStateofMind · 20/09/2022 15:56

Cayman Islands. They are a really quick flight from New York and stunning.

FlounderingFruitcake · 20/09/2022 16:01

I’d probably go to the Bahamas, Mexico, Cayman Islands or the Caribbean if you want 10 days in the same place to chill. On a plane though, not on a cruise! If you just wanted a weekend or were happy to move around I’d recommend Charleston + Folly Beach and/or Savannah + Hilton Head. Love Miami but I wouldn’t want to go to for that long or with kids!

Yep - New York will be too hot (lived there)

20viona · 20/09/2022 16:03

We did Mexico for 7 nights then onto New York for 4 nights it was brilliant.

Thanks for all your replies, very helpful!

I'd considered New York would be warm, and the temps look mid to high 20's...does it really feel unbearable? We were in Paris In August this year where it was mid 30's and that did get a bit much to be honest...

The mid-20s is proobably the average over 24h period, it will most likely be 30-35 during the day. lf you are going anyway I would rent a car and drive up to Maine or get a ferry over to Nantucket.

Unless you really suffer in the heat you’ll be fine. Yes it can get hot and humid (when i was last there in summer it was 33 every day) but everywhere indoors has a/c so you’re not out in it constantly or struggling to sleep at night.

OldYork · 20/09/2022 16:28

It’s the humidity that’s the killer in NY. Constantly sweaty!

mathanxiety · 20/09/2022 16:36

Go to Maine from NYC.

Lovely beaches, quaint towns, not boiling hot like NY or anywhere further south.

Alternatively, for something completely different - Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Fly to Detroit, drive north, cross to the UP via the Macinac Bridge.

The UP is home to a good deal of wildlife and has fantastic hiking and offers an authentic backwoods American experience.

Tenpintonpin · 20/09/2022 16:40

I think you could expect August temps in NY to be into the 30s with high humidity (that's what is was like this year, at least). It's also hurricane season in Florida/the Caribbean so not necessarily the best time to head there.. I went to the Bahamas in August and although there was no extreme weather we had a LOT of rain and it definitely felt like low season. I would probably head north, or if you wanted sea warm enough to actually swim in, maybe Bermuda - it's still technically in the hurricane belt but much less likely to suffer a serious hit (especially in August) than the Caribbean.

BuwchGochGota · 20/09/2022 16:44

I've been to NY in August. It was hot (around 30) but bearable. As PP said all buildings are air conditioned, also the streets are shaded by the tall buildings. The only things that were crazy hot were sitting in Citi Fields watching a baseball game and visiting the Statue of Liberty - both because of the lack of shade.

I'm no help on the beach resort though sorry.

TheTurn0fTheScrew · 20/09/2022 16:45

Cape Cod.
We got the train from Penn Station to Providence RI, then picked up a car to drive to Hyannis. Brilliant beaches.

Regarding NYC, we've been twice in August. Yes it's very hot (27-30 when we went), but all the sights are so heavily air conditioned that I found myself carrying around a cardi for when I got too cold indoors. And it makes for lovely evenings eating and drinking on rooftops or near the water. Would totally go in August again.

Aworldofmyown · 20/09/2022 16:46

Massachusetts is beautiful and has some great beach areas nearby.

ethelredonagoodday · 20/09/2022 16:47

We went this August. It was hot, but doable.
We also went to Washington, which was hotter!

TinaYouFatLard · 20/09/2022 16:55

We’ve been to both Florida and NYC this August. Yes, it’s hot but you expect that and deal with it. It certainly wasn’t unbearable.

How about Southwest Florida - Sanibel and Captiva are fantastic. Loads of cycling, gorgeous beaches, boating and water sports, lovely restaurants. Heaven.

TreadSoftlyOnMyDreams · 20/09/2022 17:22

Cape Cod
Newport, Rhode Island
North Carolina.
Lots of beautiful beaches and pretty towns along the east coast of the USA.

caroleanboneparte · 20/09/2022 17:35

Do what the New Yorkers do and go to Long Island/ the Hamptons or Cape Cod/ Martha's Vineyard.

Or I'd go for a Bahamas Cruise. They are the furthest north of the Caribbean islands.

allfurcoatnoknickers · 20/09/2022 19:19

I live in NYC - yes it will be hot, but everywhere indoors will be air conditioned, so you just need to be strategic and do the outdoors stuff early in the morning or later in the evening.

Also seconding @caroleanboneparte The Hamptons, Cape Cod (I adore Provincetown and Chatham) and Martha's Vineyard are all fab. You also have the North Fork of Long Island and Fire Island for places that are very popular with locals, but not so much with tourists from overseas.

RusholmeRuffian · 20/09/2022 20:33

Cape Cod, Maine coast or the Outer Banks would be my choices.
