How long do you tend to go on holiday for in Europe?

Is 1 week the norm or too short or too long? I know it will vary dependent on the type of holiday but just wondered what others tend to do

3-4 days. The only place I spend more time than that at is my parents'.

LaCerbiatta · 08/08/2022 12:59

City break no more than 3-4 days. Beach holiday, minimmum 10 days.

maranella · 08/08/2022 13:49

City break 2-5 days
Summer holiday 7-10 days typically, but this is because we like to go away several times a year and don't want to use all our holiday time in one go. If we just went on one holiday per year, in the summer, we'd probably go for 14 days.

countdowntonap · 08/08/2022 15:08

Just back from a great 17 days. Could’ve stayed longer but DH needed to return to work.

TenoringBehind · 08/08/2022 15:31

We normally do 1 week. We’ve done 2 this year and it’s far too long.

Offandonagain · 08/08/2022 15:47

We’re off to France tomorrow for 3-4 weeks.
We’ve got accommodation booked for the first week, then will see what happens after that.

We’re driving from the north of England to the Alps so taking a few days either side to get over there.

Bretonbear · 08/08/2022 15:48

I think 1 week is long enough. I think 2 weeks can drag.

maranella · 08/08/2022 15:53

Yes, I agree with you @Bretonbear. Ten days in one place is our absolute maximum, but we're not very relaxed people! I know some people can spend two, three, even four weeks just pottering about, going to the beach every day, not doing much at all, but that would drive us insane. If we go longer than 10 days we always do more than one place. Last year we did three weeks, but we went to seven different places.

I find it the opposite way round. If I don’t have anything to do then I become restless and want to go home.

We’re taking mountain bikes, climbing kit, walking and water stuff to France and I feel like 3-4 weeks isn’t going to be long enough! Although, the longest we plan to stay in one place is 10 days

Offandonagain · 08/08/2022 15:59

Sorry, I meant I agree!

ICouldHaveCheckedFirst · 08/08/2022 16:04

Just back from 3 weeks in Europe. We had 2 nights on a ferry, plus 21 nights in 7 places, in 4 different countries. Longest in 1 place was 7 nights. Brilliant, and can't wait to do it again.

BringOnSummerHolidays · 08/08/2022 16:07

7-10 days in the summer and that is staying at multiple locations. I am a home body and can’t stand not being at home for too long.

SwedishEdith · 08/08/2022 22:08

About 3 to 4 nights for a city break but at least 2 weeks for a summer trip. Often do 2 locations so feels like 2 holidays. I never feel I want to go home though and hate a week as hate the "this time next week you'll be back doing work/other mundane thing" feeling.

HelenHywater · 09/08/2022 11:20

I would normally go for a week in Europe. 3 or 4 days on a city break.

I'm not really a beach person so I can't do any longer than that in one place, and even this year we're sailing so will be at a different place each night. If I go further afield or am travelling around I'm happy to go for 3 weeks or more and at least 2, but like to travel around and go to at least 3 places in that time

We went to Norway for 10 days in Easter - 7 days skiing and 3 days in Oslo and that was perfect.

whoruntheworldgirls · 09/08/2022 11:23

10-14 days, tend to go either Easter half term or summer holidays. If i go for a week it'd be an last minute escape at Oct half term.

TheMousePipes · 09/08/2022 11:27

Just back from 3 weeks in France, booked the ferry for another three weeks next year as soon as we got home. 10 days is the maximum anywhere.

Embarras83 · 09/08/2022 11:32

Just done 16 days (bit of a driving tour of France so lots of time on the road). I was ready to come back after 14 days. I now need another holiday to recover - exhausted!

PlanetNormal · 09/08/2022 11:35

If we are doing European holidays, it’s usually a week in May or June, then a week in September or October. If we go long-haul, it’s usually two weeks.

BiddyPop · 09/08/2022 11:51

We've done 2 weeks in France, in a few different places (as in, different holidays - stayed in the same place for 2 weeks each time), which was lovely. Plenty of time for some adventures and outings, but also plenty of time to read, enjoy relaxed cooking, do a lot of swimming (DD did a lot of sailing and I did some on 1 trip which was fun).

We have done 2 weeks in the Netherlands - 1 week at a sailing event and the 2nd at a holiday place in 1 trip. That was also nice but the sailing event was stressful so not particularly a holiday part of the trip.

We are just back from 6 days in Amsterdam (having done a couple of city breaks there before) which was lovely too as it was relaxed and we had time to wander - but I would have liked a few more days to do a couple of days going to other cities by train for the day and a couple of days doing nothing but reading a book.

We've done lots of city breaks (up to 4 nights) across Europe, and I have done a fair amount of travel for work and had a small amount of personal time in some of those (an extra day or a day I needed to travel from 1 place to next but could do that at my leisure and with stops along the way).

We have never gone over in our own car - always rented a car on arrival or been where there are good public transport links. If we had our own car, we would likely do more multi-location trips as we don't mind doing that in the UK and Ireland.

Usually, we are happy to do a city in 3-4 days. Usually, we are happy to spend at least 10 days in a relaxed location where there is decent food (nice local restaurants/takeaways and good shops/some facilities for us to cook ourselves), swimming, walking (and cycling) etc. DD always wants to be doing things (hence lots of sailing - and this year she went to a sports training camp while we had a holiday), and DH can't sit still for days on end but likes to have a mix of relaxation and activity.

Hoppinggreen · 09/08/2022 11:56

Usually around 10 days but we do own a property in Spain and have spent 3 weeks there before now

MissAmbrosia · 09/08/2022 20:02

When dd was younger we always did first 3 weeks in July. Sometimes in one place only - Gite/Villa/Eurocamp - and occasionally split across 2 places. I loved having 3 weeks - a few days to recover from the drive, 2 weeks of pure chilling and then a few days to get used to idea of going back home again. Later teenage years, this didn't work so well so we reduced to 2 weeks and did things like Interrailing. This year she is working away the entire summer, so we have had a week in May and will have 10 days in September, both without her. She is meant to be home last week in August and dh has a big birthday, so hoping to plan something last minute for all us, but it will probably just be long weekend.

Silkierabbit · 09/08/2022 20:06

In summer generally 2 weeks and very active holidays, in Easter also active but a week then.

TheBikiniExpert · 09/08/2022 20:08

I don[t really get the question. Why Europe? Surely the question is about how long you like to go on holiday? Why would Europe be different?

BendingSpoons · 09/08/2022 20:14

How much holiday allowance do some people have?! We do 1 week normally. This year we have booked 10 days, which I'm hoping will work well. As a child, we used to go for 2 weeks and that was great, but it's a massive chunk of leave in one go. I also wonder if I would find it a bit too long now.

EmmaStone · 09/08/2022 20:23

It depends on the kind of holiday - we had 9 nights in France last month (7 in one place, 1 either side for travelling), and going for 15 nights at the end of the summer - again 1 night travelling, 7 nights in one place, 4 nights somewhere else, 3 nights somewhere else.

I can't remember the last time I stayed in one place for 2 whole weeks, but I get very antsy about trying to see as much as possible in a short time frame. The world has too much to offer 😁
