New York for 3 nights

Lifeisonhold · 03/08/2022 07:50

Can anyone tell me how much it is to visit New York inc flights and hotel for approx 3 nights?

I desperately want to go (probably in Feb half term) with my DH and DC. But the quotes online are coming up with under £2000 inc hotel which seems too low.

Can anyone give me a ball park so I know what looks right?

Thank you :)

You’ll spend the best part of two days travelling!

Lifeisonhold · 03/08/2022 07:50

That was a Hilton hotel btw.
3 of us in 1 room

A travel agent might know more than your average mumsnetter.

Flowertop845 · 03/08/2022 07:56

I think it's very very cold in Jan & Feb which is probably why it's cheaper

Lifeisonhold · 03/08/2022 07:58

I didn’t even know travel agents were still a thing 🤣

The hotels are room only usually, it is cheap to get to - lots of the USA is. We did vegas for 5 nights with flights and transfers and hotel all for £680pp

QueSyrahSyrah · 03/08/2022 08:03

Depends on the hotels you're looking at.

I'd expect a half decent one in the kind of central location you'll need for such a short stay to be upwards of $300 a night (plus there's tax to pay on arrival) so the flights would need to be pretty cheap to come in under £2000 for 3 people.

bert3400 · 03/08/2022 08:04

We've done NY in Feb, it was cold but beautiful sunny crisp days. Easy to explore.

Start looking at Google flights or Skyscanner for flights

Booking.com for hotels

Pick the area where most interest is for you, NY city is big and if you are located centrally to your preferred attractions then it makes it so much easier

My DH husband has just returned from there, he took our DS12 as a lads trip and there was so much to do we are all going back for Christmas week.

BerylBird · 03/08/2022 08:06

There are only 3 of you, one hotel room - so that's £660 each at a low season time of year..... it doesn't sound beyond the realms of possibility. Not many people would want to travel in February when you are quite likely to experience very cold / snowy / unpleasant weather.

Check also:
Are the flights at unsociable times which mean you lose all of your first and last days to travelling?
Where is the hotel - is it central?

Jellybean100 · 03/08/2022 08:08

I’d try and stretch it to 4 nights. Flights are approx 500pp(but can be as cheap as 350) a decent hotel will be around 200+ a night for 3 of you rather than per person (look on booking.com or hotels.com)
obviously spending money on top
New York in February is freezing and beautiful. Normally sunny, clear and very cold.

Lifeisonhold · 03/08/2022 08:08

@bert3400 you just got me all excited! I’m Norwegian but live in the UK - I love the cold!

vegas sounds tempting!

Thanks @QueSyrahSyrah for the information! I didn’t know about the tax gubbins x

@Jellybean100 good idea! I think we can stretch to 4 nights.

chilly and beautiful sounds so perfect! (We’re used to ghastly weather 🤣)

I’ll have another look at hotels in a moment.

thanks everyone x

We’ve bee debating going to NY for 4 nights. Tui offer the cheapest breaks that I’ve found- especially if you’re looking at Jan ish.

BluOcty · 03/08/2022 08:18

Can you stretch it at all? It's such a tiring trip for that short amount of time.

JengaCupboard · 03/08/2022 08:19

I did 4 nights in May - the flights with checked baggage with AA/BA (good flight times) were I think about £550 return. Our hotel in Hells Kitchen was about £800 for a twin with breakfast - it was mid-range.

What I would say is plan your itinerary and take plenty of cash - between all the usual tourist stuff, theater and general lunches/drinks/dinner (nothing too OTT at all) I spent about £1500.00 in 3.5 days. Not including any shopping.

JengaCupboard · 03/08/2022 08:23

Also I'd recommend getting a CityPass

You can save loads and book/amend time slots in advance - we also skipped large queues of school groups etc.

We did 3 nights a couple of years ago. We landed early Thursday afternoon and departed Sunday evening.
We stayed in a Hilton hotel neat the ESB, so the first afternoon/evening we stayed in that area, did ESB, Nintendo store (a must for DS), Grand Central.
The next full day we did Staten Island, the 911 Memorial and museum, pizza in Brooklyn and a walk back over the bridge. Saw a show on Broadway.
Day after was The High Line walk and on our last day we cycled in Central Park and went to Radio City.
We did loads of other stuff too, so 3 days is doable.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 03/08/2022 08:29

I think that sounds OK. We are flying to/from NY in October and flights are just over £400 each although we are also checking in one case which adds to the cost. We're not staying in NY this time but have done so several.times before, and it's possible to get cheaper deals, especially if you're prepared to stay in, say, Brookland rather than Manhattan.

Be prepared that NY is VERY expensive in terms of eating out. I remember 10 years ago paying $14 for a small glass of very ordinary white wine in a very ordinary restaurant and being horrified. That now seems like a bargain! Plus you need to add in 20% service charge for meals out. We usually go in August so we buy food in supermarkets for picnics in Central Park but you won't have that option in February.

gogohmm · 03/08/2022 08:33

I paid £900 for 5 nights in May for 2 so seems about right for feb which is the off season. This didn't include flights. Where is the hotel though, we stayed on 42nd street near Times Square, much more expensive than some other areas

tentpoles · 03/08/2022 08:37

Have a look at BA flight/hotel deals, they can be very good value. Also they have ATOL protection.

gogohmm · 03/08/2022 08:37

Just a word of warning. Food and drink is very expensive unless you are incredibly disciplined. There are cheap eats to be had but remember to always add tax and tip to prices to add 25% at least when sitting down. Attractions are pricey and alcohol is extortionate - $9 plus tax and tip for just a beer, again a few cheaper options but they only work out at London prices!

gogohmm · 03/08/2022 08:39

But shout out to the pizza kiosk at Times Square-$3 plus tax for 2 slices pizza and a can of Coke

LilacLaurel · 03/08/2022 08:45

We went with BA in April (flights were actually Aer Lingus) and paid £550 each for 5 nights hotel and return flights.

Agree with this, we went prepared for it to be expensive but we're shocked at just HOW expensive it was, it makes London look cheap!

GrandSlamFinalee · 03/08/2022 09:27

My last NYC trip just a few weeks back cost around €800 for the flight (direct with United). I then paid $600 for 4 nights in a Holiday Inn in Lower Manhattan. Both of these were booked 6 months or so in advance. I doubt you can still get these prices now, sadly.
