February half term canaries?

Jessica60 · 02/08/2022 11:32

Hi, I have been saving for sometime now to take 2 adults 2 children, aged 9 and 5 on holiday in February 2023 half term.
I have decided on the Canaries. I have found somewhere I like in lanzarote.

I am a bit concerned on the weather. Some say it may be too cold and windy for the children to enjoy the pool. The main activity would be sitting by a pool and children playing in pool.

Anyone been in February who can advise me?

Thank you

We went to Playa Blanca in February once. The weather was just about ok. We had a villa so turned the heating up on the pool! It was breezy and often cloudy but plenty of warm sun, lovely out the wind and no rain. Not sure I'd chance it again with young DC in Feb tbh, locals said it had poured down for days just before we arrived.
We went to Tenerife in Feb too and the weather was a lot better.

latelydaydreams · 02/08/2022 11:56

We did Tenerife in April.

I would say it was on the cool side for playing in the pool for any length of time. DC happier to get on with it than I was, but the 22/24 temps can easily be 18/19 the week you go.

Weather can be mixed in February.. and as the island is windy if it isn't sunny it can feel cool.. a heated pool would be essential that time of year.

GrandSlamFinalee · 02/08/2022 12:24

I’ve been in December and January and there are a few hours during the day when it’s definitely warm enough to sit by the pool. Early mornings and late afternoons it can get chilly but of course different people tolerate different temperatures. I love going to the Canaries in winter, weather wouldn’t put me off.

Flopisfatteningbingforchristmas · 02/08/2022 13:02

Are the pools heated?
We are going in January and are taking short wets suits for the children even though the pools are heated.

Changemaname1 · 02/08/2022 13:05

If you can push it to Easter that will be better

custardbear · 02/08/2022 13:12

We've been a few times in feb half term, it was 20-25 ish most days, and we did get tan and sun burn too (especially me, blonde and fair). Some islands are windy, I think fuertaventura was windy, Tenerife was lovely. Do some research before you commit to booking

TreadSoftlyOnMyDreams · 02/08/2022 13:16

Friends were there at early Easter and said the pools were mostly unheated and while it was warmish outside, the water was baltic

Louise0701 · 02/08/2022 13:19

Lanzarote is always windy and definitely more so in Dec-March time.

TeenDivided · 02/08/2022 13:29

I'd take some form of wetsuits.
That said, a bit of a waste to go there and spend all the time in or by the pool when you could

  • camel ride

  • go up Timanfya

  • go to Rancho Texas daytime (which has a water park)

  • go to rancho texas in the evening

  • go to see cuevas los verdes

  • go to see the place with splashy waves and larva formations SW coast

  • go to Playa Blanca if staying elsewhere

  • go to Puerto del carmen if staying else where

  • go to Puerto Calero & take a ride on a yellow submarine

Obviously you don't need to do all of these but to do some might be nice?

RewildingAmbridge · 02/08/2022 13:32

We went in Feb, and didn't swim the water was too chilly, it was like mild spring weather, we did lots of the activities suggested above and hoped a car. Also did vineyard tour and tasting. This was pre DS though, probably wouldn't go back at that time of year with DS

HandbagsnGladrags · 02/08/2022 13:33

Think it might be a bit hit and miss in Feb. Have been lots of times at Easter and had mixed weather as well.

Abouttimemum · 02/08/2022 13:58

Lanzarote is way too windy for me at that time of year. I much prefer Tenerife. Even then I’d probably wait until April time.

dreamingofsun · 02/08/2022 16:26

cold at night but ok during the day. u need heated pool. generally windy but nicer than tenerife as few high rise blocks in lanzarote. we had a day of drizzle, but its lovely getting off the plane and shedding your fleece to put on shorts and tshirt

liveforsummer · 02/08/2022 16:30

Very risky. I've been before and had gloomy grey skies, slightly warmer but not hot days and rain so heavy it flooded the beach and cancelled an event planned on it all in one week. At no point would I have been able to use a pool or sunbathe

BG2015 · 02/08/2022 17:05

Cape Verde or Egypt are probably safer mid haul destinations during February.

USaYwHatNow · 02/08/2022 19:05

We went to Lanzarote in June and it was suuuppperrrrr windy which, even on a warm day kinda caught you by surprise as you got out the pool. That was with average temps of about 25-30C. I don't think I'd fancy my chances in Feb.

AnyFucker · 02/08/2022 19:18

I have been to Lanzarote in Oct, Nov, Dec, Jan, Feb and March

Jan and Feb are the coolest months. You need fleeces and long trousers for evening. On most days however, it is pleasantly warm between 11am and 4pm, similar to a typical English summer day. If you have a sheltered spot and a heated pool it will be fine. We stay at PlayaBlanca and surprisingly, found the beaches were less windy than the accommodations. I always come back with a tan and my bikini gets plenty of use. Just be prepared for mixed, changeable but ultimately rather pleasant weather.

Ballsaque · 02/08/2022 21:19

I found the unheated pools and sea far too cold and that was a July holiday. And yes very windy.

definiely wouldn’t go back and certainly not in feb. Sorry!

Jessica60 · 03/08/2022 02:32

Thank you for your replies. I have been looking for ones with heated pools, there are many advertised as being heated but when you read the trip advisor reviews people are saying not heated or not heated enough.
Finding it hard to actually find a tenerife or lanzarote that actually has a warm pool.

Ballsaque · 03/08/2022 09:45

Yes I have found that with hotels too,it really annoyed me on our holiday.

We decided on Majorca, perfect sea temp and pools are lovely. No good for feb tho.

what about somewhere like Cape Verde?
Or Morocco? (I don’t know what their temps are like in feb tho, just thinking of other places)

lickenchugget · 03/08/2022 09:48

The ‘heated’ pool in Tenerife was ok for a quick dip (ten mins) for the kids, but too cold for all-day swimming. They were also too cold afterwards to sit in wet swimwear. The non heated pools were like ice.

lickenchugget · 03/08/2022 09:49

Sorry, this was in April

MakeadealwithGod · 03/08/2022 09:50

I went to Lanzarote one Easter and it was very windy and cold. I wore the same pair of leggings all week as none of my summer holiday clothes were suitable.

thefamilyupstairs · 03/08/2022 10:51

Went to Arrecife one Easter holidays and although it was shorts and T shirts warm, it was SO windy. The pool was freezing so we didn't do more than a brief dip. Looking back on the photos we always had a jacket on when we left the complex as the wind was so strong.
