Dim question about airport security

I haven't flown for many years other than a couple of domestic, work things which literally needed no packing as it was there and back in a day.

At security, what do I need to put in the tray separate to other things? Obviously liquids but I'm confused about electronics. We will have straighteners, earbuds, electric shaver, electric toothbrush, power bank, 2 vape batteries and a few ipads. Do these all need presented separately? Or are they fine as long as its all hand luggage? I tried looking online but it was a but vague. Just want to make it smooth as possible without having to fish around for toothbrushes and earbuds.

If it makes any difference, I'm flying from Bristol.

I pads will need to be seperate. (Plus phones, laptops, kindles etc).

chutneypig · 30/07/2022 12:25

They said laptop and iPad but not my phone at Heathrow this week. I took my kindle out as well to be on the safe side.

HundredMilesAnHour · 30/07/2022 12:28

That's quite a lot of electronics so don't be surprised if your bag is sent for a second security check (nothing to worry about, just takes longer). When I used to travel with work, it used to happen all the time as I was usually laden down with multiple laptops, phones, adaptors, chargers etc.

Needadviceagain · 30/07/2022 12:29

Thanks all. So it looks like electric toothbrush, straightners etc will be OK to pack away a little deeper but ipads need to be separate (and able to be switched on)?

Everything electronic out and then maybe your bag in a separate tray. Currently in Rome, so have just been through Manchester. If you have hold luggage I'd put everything not delicate in there to save delays; I saw many people/families held up by having a lot to be checked at security.

Movinghouseatlast · 30/07/2022 12:37

I pads, kindles etc need to be out. The reason is how the large battery reads on the security screen, so they have to be able to see that it is a computer.

Just think of trying not to be held up. So anything you can do to stop your bag being pulled over or stop a search.

I never wear an underwired bra and take my hair clasp out for example. I used to fly twice a week for work so know the tricks!

It'll be spread between 5 of us so hoping they might not think it's completely excessive. We've booked assistance/sensory room as 2 of the 3 kids travelling are autistic so crossing fingers we'll whizz through!

General rule iPads, laptops etc separate, but beyond that the details can vary airport to airport, so have everything electrical positioned so that it can be unpacked reasonably quickly.

Reason being the local security managers at each airport are (or at least used to be) free to set their own rules over and above those set at national level.

TheWayoftheLeaf · 30/07/2022 13:03

iPads, phones, laptops, electric toothbrush chargers - anything with a battery basically.

Also coat separate from electronics - they all need to be clear to see.

Liquids, anything in pockets, jewellery, belts with metal on them.

PriamFarrl · 30/07/2022 13:04

I have everything with a battery in my hand bag, so iPad, kindle, mobile, toothbrush etc. then plonk it all in the separate tray. Make sure that iPads and laptops have enough power in them to turn on.

TheWayoftheLeaf · 30/07/2022 13:04

I got pulled for the toothbrush recently while running to my gate

snowflake29 · 30/07/2022 13:06

iPads, straighteners, laptops, anything in your pockets like coins if loose, all need to be separate from your hand luggage case. There will be signs up as you approach security explaining what you need to present separately.

I've flown a lot and usually my phone is in my handbag which isn't an issue.

Toottooot · 30/07/2022 13:11

When I flew last month hair straighteners had to be taken out your bag.

TizerorFizz · 30/07/2022 13:40

If you have hold luggage, loads of that stuff should be in your hold case. iPads and phones most people have in hand luggage.

Luredbyapomegranate · 30/07/2022 13:46

Liquids, laptops, eye pads, all big electric hair implements and anything similar

not battery packs earbuds toothbrush or razor, not to say they won’t have a rootle around if it looks interesting on the scanner though - so if in doubt take it out.

metal water bottles also worth taking out, I have been pulled for those a few times

TizerorFizz · 30/07/2022 14:57

Why do they need to be in hand luggage though. Wouldn’t a family have hold luggage? Think God I don’t travel with all this kit! Why are hair straighteners in hand luggage. Or a toothbrush?

Flopisfatteningbingforchristmas · 30/07/2022 15:04

Anything with a battery needs to go in hand luggage or at least the battery does. All other electric items are fine in the hold.

We always put all electronics within one carrier bag within one person’s hand luggage while the the other adult does the same with liquids. It makes whacking everything out on trays easier at security. Electronics can then we redistributed later. Kids hand luggage never contains anything which needs to be separated out for ease.

Electric toothbrush shouldn’t be put in the hold.

Theimpossiblegirl · 30/07/2022 15:07

Flew from Bristol on Monday. Was told to keep everything in the bag.
My bra and DM sandals were more problematic.
It's running smoothly but slow. They will rush you through if you're at risk of missing a flight though, you have to ask (and prove it).
You can refill water bottles once through security. Take snacks. Meal deals were pretty much sold out.
Have a good trip.

Maybe they're only going short haul or short trip so hand luggage only. We've just come back from a month in Spain and flew hand luggage only as the apartment had a washing machine.

We were stopped at security and asked to separate our liquids out across the trays - max 1 bag/10x100ml per person. I had put mine & my daughters, separate bags, in one tray & they stopped us and said they had to be separate 🤷🏼‍♀️

StrangeCondition · 30/07/2022 15:12

Ive travelled through 4 differrnt airports in the last month, phones, power banks, ear buds don't have to be left out, just tablets and laptops.

We always have check in luggage so are only taking one 20 x 20 cm bag of liquids.

Electric toothbrush shouldn’t be put in the hold.

It's not always that straightforward, operator might have own rules but generically it can depend on how they are powered, types/size of batteries/whether they are removable or not..

Hours of fun available with this table (which also covers things like hair curlers/straighteners):

We're hand luggage only as we're only away for a few days. It's hardly a lot of kit for 5 people. Sorry for wanting to brush our teeth Grin

Thanks to everyone who's been helpful! Seems to vary so I'll just make sure everything is accessible and stick it in a tray.
