Dim question about airport security

Needadviceagain · 30/07/2022 12:17

I haven't flown for many years other than a couple of domestic, work things which literally needed no packing as it was there and back in a day.

At security, what do I need to put in the tray separate to other things? Obviously liquids but I'm confused about electronics. We will have straighteners, earbuds, electric shaver, electric toothbrush, power bank, 2 vape batteries and a few ipads. Do these all need presented separately? Or are they fine as long as its all hand luggage? I tried looking online but it was a but vague. Just want to make it smooth as possible without having to fish around for toothbrushes and earbuds.

If it makes any difference, I'm flying from Bristol.

You just need to listen to what you’re told to do while queueing. They will shout at you numerous times that iPads, kindles and straighteners must be removed from your bag.

Not flown since 2019 but then it was always laptops, tablets and kindles and liquids.

Never asked for my hairdryer or atraightener

ThirtyTwoTwo · 30/07/2022 15:42

Could you not just use a normal toothbrush for those few days? Will be so much less hassle. I wouldn’t even consider taking my electric toothbrush for a short break

ArnoldBee · 30/07/2022 15:42

At our local airport we get shouted at and the rules always change. Be prepared that every single time our youngest has flown (now 10) since he was a baby they have checked his shoes so he goes through in easy to fasten footwear.

Not helpful for you, but this thread has taught me you can take electric shavers in hand luggage I'd have assumed you couldn't. Good to know!

Natsku · 30/07/2022 15:44

Flew from Stansted a week ago, had to lay out all electronics on the tray so nothing was on top of another. Had laptop, tablet, phones and powerbanks.

Some airports have new machines that mean you don't have to take anything out not even liquids. They are brilliant, makes security go so much quicker.

Ooh I’ve packed a hand held steamer in the hold luggage. Might I need to get it out?

Not really sure wot that is but first question would be how is it powered?

SzeliSecond · 30/07/2022 15:58

I got pulled for a dairylea dunker and DP a fountain pen at manchester last month. Dairylea should have been with liquids and pen was broken by security and handed back as could have been a weapon...

Sounds very typical of Manchester, security there has a reputation...

There's a superdrug at Bristol for any toiletries, might be cheaper than your destination.

It just plugs in. It’s a kind of iron.

Thanks...

If as it sounds there's no energy store (e.g. battery/gas cylinder) then IMHO it should be fine in the hold..

Thanks all. So it looks like electric toothbrush, straightners etc will be OK to pack away a little deeper but ipads need to be separate (and able to be switched on)?

Everything electrical must be removed.

I was stopped earlier this year as I forgot to take my straighteners out. They searched my case, & sent it through aga8n.

Waystation · 30/07/2022 16:11

I travel frequently- always laptop/iPad separate - normally have my straighteners in my hand luggage and I have never been asked to take it out.. mostly travel from Birmingham, Bristol and Gatwick.

There's no right/wrong generic answer....as I mentioned upthread the local security duty managers at each airport are allowed to enforce enhanced rules above the national minimum standard if they see fit..

So laptops/iPads out is fairly universal but things straighteners and all electrical items being required to be out in a separate tray really is a variable and depends on the airport..

MindPalace · 30/07/2022 16:17

At Gatwick last week, we started to get our laptops and iPads out and they told us to zip them away again, so only phones. So def not elec toothbrushes, fans, kindles etc.

MindPalace · 30/07/2022 16:24

Still got my bag searched though - they forensically scanned DD’s Mars bar with a scanner. Electronics fine.

QueSyrahSyrah · 30/07/2022 16:26

Unfortunately it depends on the airport! Most are laptops and iPads only to be put through separately, some are also phone, and I've been through one or two that are all electronics Confused

New scanners are being trialled at some airports now that mean you don't have to remove anything, can't wait until they're rolled out more widely.

shedwithivy · 30/07/2022 16:30

Phone/kindle chargers (adapter, plug and cable)... do they need to go in the tray?

Gherkingreen · 30/07/2022 16:32

I take anything electrical out (iPad/phone/, kindle) and put it in one tray. Second tray for the bag itself, liquids in clear plastic food bag, and any top layers, belts, jewellery that could ping the walk-through security sensor.
Recently both DH and I had pat down and shoes off through security but it's not an issue, rather they are checking than not.

hairycabbage · 30/07/2022 17:04

I just flew from Bristol. They asked for iPads, phones, kindles, hairdryers and straighteners to be put in the security trays separately (and we forgot one kindle that then flagged up!)
Of five of us, three were body scanned, deer checked in the machine and two checked again by hand

The need really really does depend on airport/day/shift..it probably won't hurt to put them in a tray anyway but it might be a waste of effort..On the day you need to check the notices/signs/listen to any announcements.

Way I used to do it was automatically haul iPad/laptop out of bag and into a tray ( unless definitely not required to do so) and have anything else easily accessible at the top of the bag so I could decant it quickly into a tray if needed

TizerorFizz · 30/07/2022 19:23

This is government advice on what you can pack and where. Electrical kit doesn’t have to be in hand luggage but obviously some of it should be.

MayISuggestSomeThickCutSteakChipsToGoWithThat · 30/07/2022 19:43

What about disposable e-cigs. Does anyone know if they are ok in hand luggage or do they need to be checked in, in a suitcase?
