Passport in maiden name

Ttcaftermmc · 19/04/2022 17:59

Does anyone know if you can travel with a passport in your maiden name (obviously as long as it’s in date), we have booked a holiday abroad for 2 months time and I’ve just realised I hadn’t yet gotten around to changing the name but it still has 3 years left

It's fine.

People tend to wait until renewal to change surname on it.

Dearmariacountmein · 19/04/2022 18:02

I’m pretty sure your ticket and passport have to be in the same name. Can you pay for a name change on the ticket?

Dearmariacountmein · 19/04/2022 18:02

Oh, sorry I misunderstood. Ignore me

BurscoughBooths · 19/04/2022 18:02

Fine as long as you have booked your flight in the same name

Cakemakingat6am · 19/04/2022 18:03

You used to just take your marriage certificate but I think it’s changed since 1990 when I did that.

dementedpixie · 19/04/2022 18:03

As long as your passport matches the booking then its fine

Lem0nDrizzle · 19/04/2022 18:03

No valid point @Dearmariacountmein

Never thought about the actual ticket.

mrstea301 · 19/04/2022 18:03

It's fine as long as the ticket matches the name on your passport. I've been married for six years and haven't changed my passport yet - was waiting for it to expire (next year!)

HappyAsASandboy · 19/04/2022 18:07

You don't have to change your name when you get married, so perfectly fine to keep your passport in your maiden name.

Your holiday ticket should match your passport though, otherwise your passport doesn't prove you are the ticket holder!

Aposterhasnoname · 19/04/2022 18:08

Your ticket and passport names have to match

inaloop · 19/04/2022 18:10

No issue with which name you use as long as the name matches your ticket. I have just returned from a holiday with a passport in my married name 6 years after my divorce.

CarmenThePanda · 19/04/2022 18:13

Yep, but your flight ticket has to match your name on your passport.

You should be able to change your name in your booking for an admin fee.

CloudPop · 19/04/2022 18:14

Never changed my surname so passport still in my "maiden" (ghastly term). As others have said m, just make sure your ticket is in the same name and there is no issue.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 19/04/2022 18:15

I'm glad you wrote this as I got married last year after renewing my passport the year before 🤦🏻‍♀️

GirlsTalk250 · 19/04/2022 18:39

It’s fine.

If you need a Covid passport to enter country and that’s in your married name, take your marriage certificate.

TizerorFizz · 19/04/2022 18:42

Ditto covid tests. All need to be in one name.

Ttcaftermmc · 19/04/2022 18:54

Thanks all, really helpful and one less thing to stress about!

@Dearmariacountmein thank you for that I didn’t even think about the ticket, husband booked it so that’s in my married name, booked through TUI and just checked and he’s managed to just amend my passenger details with no fee so glad you pointed that out!

@GirlsTalk250 also didn’t consider covid related documents so good shout, where we are going only requires a lateral flow 48 before so I’ll try and get that in my previous name but if not I’ll make sure I have my marriage certificate with me. :)

Thanks again everyone really reassuring!!

It’s fine. My husbands passports are in his maiden name (haha not sure if there is a different word or not when its a man), just remember to have the booking in the same name on the passport and if a visa is required take a copy of your marriage certificate.

Demonstrates the cringe factor if the term ‘maiden name’.

Birth name is fine, surely? We have all got used to ‘first name’ instead of ‘Christian name’, after all.

PrinnyPree · 19/04/2022 21:48

I travelled for 7 years under my maiden name until my passport expired. As long as you remember to book your ticket under your maiden name all good. I did used to take a copy of marriage certificate along though in case there were any issues.

ImInStealthMode · 19/04/2022 21:53

It's fine, I've booked our honeymoon and another trip a month later in my maiden name.

A trip 3 months after that is booked in my married name as I only need travel on my (quick to change) driving licence for that one. Excited to travel in my married name!

You needn't have changed the booking though; passport and wedding certificate would have been fine.

Sortilege · 19/04/2022 21:58

Excited to travel in my married name!

Grin

That’ll be an anti-climax. It’s exactly the same border control crap and hotel check in tedium in any name.

MrsWidgerysLodger · 19/04/2022 22:17

I use maiden name as I haven't been known as my birth name since I was 6 months old due to my sperm donor doing a runner, leaving my mum literally holding the baby.

That was in response to @CarmenThePanda (quote fail!)

ImInStealthMode · 19/04/2022 22:19

@Sortilege Domestic flight, hand luggage only and off to see family. I'll be 'right WinkSmile
