20kg for a family of 3

We’re going to Spain over Easter and I’ve just realised I’ve only booked 20kg of luggage. 2 adults and a 3 year old. 4 days. Dh takes barely anything. Is this do-able or mad?

For 4 days?! I take a small handbag-type rucksack for 4 days! What on earth do you need 20k of? Spare trousers, 2 tops, 4 pairs of socks and knickers, toothbrush, deodorant. Job done.

How many different outfits do you need each over 4 days?
Yes should be easily doable.

It's loads, honestly.

Plus you've got your hand luggage even if its the smaller bags.

We've just done 3 days in Europe and all we had was a small rucksack each and it was fine.

Easily doable. Be ruthless. We do a month in NZ on one suitcase for four of us. Next time we go it'll be one hand luggage wheeled suitcase each! Less is more.

Absolutely fine.
Don't forget you have hand luggage too, which is probably about the same amount again.

Check the hand luggage guidelines and make sure all 3 of you have a decent sized bag that fits in the limits. No weight limit on hand luggage, so put anything heavy in there.

Thank you for the responses! I’m not the most logical thinker in terms of measurements/weights etc. I used to travel to lots of lovely locations in my twenties and probably took a ridiculous amount.

Last time we travelled lots was when my dd was still a baby and it felt like a ridiculous amount of things were needed, but I suppose that will have been drastically reduced now she’s 3!

I should have also said - we are flying with Ryan air with a non-priority carry on so we won’t have the 10kg of hand luggage each that we usually would. Although judging by people’s responses it still sounds doable and we can put heavier things in a small carry on.

There is no way I could manage 20kg and just 1 case for 3 people

20kg is a pretty hefty size suitcase so plenty of space for clothes for 3 people

Now that we are charged separately for luggage I only ever book 1 x 23kg suitcase and its never been an issue

What on earth did you take @Barkingmadhouse?

I went skiing so had ski boots, helmet, goggles and lots of chunky winter kit and my case was still under 15kg

Easy, wear jeans, boots or trainer, jumper and jacket there and back. Then a couple of changes tops, spare trousers etc. 3 year old clothes are small. Check weather before you go to decide if warm enough for summer dresses or shorts etc. if need towels take small travel/easy dry. Make up and toiletries mini sized.

Depends on the kind of holiday you’re having & what you plan to do. When I go to Dubai / Spain for 4 days I tend to pack 3-4 outfits per day because it’s hot and I like to roam / go to the beach / visit waterparks everyday & you can’t do everything with the same outfit. If I were going to Western Europe 1 outfit per 2 days plus 2 nice / day to evening dresses in case we go out.

Easy. Wear your heaviest items of clothing, remember your toddler can have her own carry on personal item - we took a rucksack for my baby last time we went on Ryanair and it was fine. Fitted all his clothes in plus changing stuff. They will also allow one baby ‘item’ to travel in the hold for free so if you need to take a buggy or car seat this is included.

Could you add on one 10kg carry on ? Not usually that pricey with Ryanair and gives you a bit more wriggle room.

2 adults 2 kids under 5. Often travel with just the hand baggage that Ryan Air gives you if for short periods or going to visit family where we can get clothes washed. Should be doable

Are you taking a car seat? You can chuck lots of bits in that.

But really depends what you are doing? City break staying at hotel then easy. Winter sports at accommodation where you need to bring towels and bedding then probably not.

Definitely, we went to Spain with our 3 year old with just hand luggage , buy toiletries and nappies ( if needed ) at the airport

We only ever take hand luggage for two weeks so an extra case is plenty

Clothes don't weigh much, it's liquids and shoes that add to the weight so if you can ration those you'll be fine. It depends what sort of break you're going on - if it's 4 days where you'll need pool stuff, sports kit, casual clothes and smart going out clothes each then you'll struggle but if it's a beach holiday or city break then I think you'll be fine.

But the OP hasn't said anything about doing lots of different activities and for 4 days wouldn't you just wear trainers or boots on the plane and stick a pair of sandals or flip flops in the suitcase to cover your footwear requirements?

You don't need loads of liquids either and wouldn't it be better to all share the same shower gel etc rather than paying out for more luggage so you can take endless lotions and potions? I wouldn't exactly call that 'rationing' though.
