Travel Insurance with lots of health conditions

bellac11 · 07/03/2022 20:38

I havent been abroad in a while not since the Brexit thing and used to rely on the health card (cant remember the name) so rightly or wrongly didnt get health/travel insurance as we only went to Europe

So Im now searching for travel insurance, Ive only made it to the first page on a comparison website and I wants me to input my health conditions, I have tons! Im very middle aged and have had a plethora of diagnoses over the years, some are formal, some are GPs notes rather than a diagnosis per se. None of them are 'serious' as such,, but the usual depression and anxiety, migraine, tremor (informal diagnosis), overweight, high blood pressure, years and years ago I had a tumor, then kidney stones, various fibroids, IBS, PCOS, I cant even remember the full lot to be honest.
What do others do, I cant be the only one who has a nice collection of past and present 'ailments' ?

I had to get travel insurance for my elderly father in law. I asked him what his medical conditions were but he really had no clue, so I went on Just Travel Insurance website where it asked for names of medication rather than list of conditions. Another year I used Staysure

bellac11 · 07/03/2022 21:06

Thats very helpful and Ive just discovered (cant believe how dim I am) that the health card still exists!! Ive just applied for a new one

So with that in mind do I get travel insurance after all..... never used to bother but Im older now and should be more sensible

I think you should get insurance. I don’t think the health card covers things like repatriation in the event of a serious illness. Definitely try and get everything covered via conditions or medication lists.

Jellybean100 · 07/03/2022 21:10

Use compare the market, it will list the companies that will insure you. I am not 100% but I don’t think newly issued ehic cards are valid

bellac11 · 07/03/2022 21:12

Well thats a nuisance, just been into 'Just Travel' and they wont let me continue with the quote due to me saying I have had treatment and diagnosis of a psychiatric condition and I need to phone (not going to be able to do that due to working hours). Its only depression and anxiety.

How “middle aged” are we talking?
Saga do insurance for over 50s and are very used to multiple health conditions

womaninatightspot · 07/03/2022 21:19

Could you upgrade you bank account for a couple of months. I did and dont remember lots of questions.

bellac11 · 07/03/2022 21:20

yes over 50... I suppose what Im trying to avoid is having to put the whole lot in because I literally cannot remember what Ive got, when I saw the GP for things, whether its in the last 2 years or 6 months or whatever... Is there just a travel insurance for someone who is generally the 'worried well'?

I use staysure, I have about 8 medical conditions and take many, many pills & injection medicine. They aren't overly expensive either for what they cover for us

bellac11 · 07/03/2022 21:24

Im struggling to remember when I had things though, the tumor was over 30 years ago, do I put that down? It was benign

How can they not be valid?

You absolutely need insurance.

Some destinations require you to pay even if you have the EHIC equivalent, as they only give you access to the local arrangements which might be paid for.

If you’re ill and can’t make a flight, new ones might cost you hundreds.

If you have a serious injury while on holiday and need to be repatriated, that would cost you tens of thousands.

Roominmyhouse · 07/03/2022 21:30

If you are travelling abroad separate travel insurance is a must. It’s always been the case that the ehic did not replace insurance and the new card is the same. Aside from the fact travel insurance would cover you if you need to cancel a trip, medical treatment abroad can get very expensive very quickly. It’s madness to travel without it.

You are unlikely to get a policy which blanket covers you without declaring medical conditions. So if you can’t remember everything ask for access to your GP records. It needs to be accurate otherwise it could affect your cover if you need to make a claim.

gogohm · 07/03/2022 21:31

Try stay sure. They covered us despite dp have a depression without questioning it - they only refuse if you have recently been hospitalised.

I have 3 diagnosis overlapping with yours and there wasn't even a surcharge

bellac11 · 07/03/2022 21:33

Well the first comparison site was moneysupermarket and only one company came up, never heard of them. Im too tired now to do another one tonight. It took bloody ages.
Would you put in things like if you've had vitimin deficiencies over the years? Urine infections that sort of thing, chest infections?

It depends on what the insurer asks. It’s unlikely you’ll be asked to declare you entire history from birth. Usually it’s things you’ve seen a doctor for in the last few years, or anything you take medication for. You may be best to use a comparison site or broker if you are not sure how to answer the medical history questions.
Toddlerteaplease · 07/03/2022 21:34

I use "it's so easy" a week on France vista me about £20.

BirdOnTheWire · 07/03/2022 21:35

I have a catalogue of health conditions and declare them scrupulously. Miss anything out and it could invalidate the policy. I am careful to only travel where I know there is good healthcare.
Some of the specialist health conditions travel insurers such as Staysure actually charge more than mainstream ones so be sure to get quotes from all sorts.
Ultimately I am resigned to paying £100s for insurance on top of the cost of a holiday but it gives me peace of mind to travel.
Try Jet2 insurance (with quidco cashback) and ABTA travel insurance.

Toddlerteaplease · 07/03/2022 21:35

Look up specialist insurers for people with medical conditions.

nocoolnamesleft · 07/03/2022 21:35

All Clear is usually very good at covering existing conditions.

bellac11 · 07/03/2022 21:38

Compare the market has brought back zero results. I said that I had pre existing conditions, it didnt ask me what ones, it asked if I was under investigation for any conditions I said yes, it didnt expand to detail what they were

Am I doing something wrong?

OP posts:
TheGonnagle · 07/03/2022 21:39

UTIs and chest infections are not what they’re looking for. Something tangible, that you are medicated or under consultant led care for. They don’t want an unabridged list, just things that make you more of a risk to insure than the average person - no need to mention historical ailments.

bruffin · 07/03/2022 21:39

We get family insurance worldwide with no questions through DH company.
Also you can get a ghic card if your ehic card has run out

bellac11 · 07/03/2022 21:44

But the insurers dont 'ask' on the websites Ive used tonight as such they ask you to put in medical conditions that youve ever had,, suffered from, been diagnosed with, sought or received medical treatment for

That seems to cover everything from birth

I can see why I never bothered with it to be honest but I will, Im just getting frustrated. I dont understand how 'compare the market' works, Ive done it again, it doesnt take you to a page where you put your health conditions in yet on the front page of the quote where you tick 'yes' for pre existing conditions it says you have to tell us what these are.

OP posts:
BirdOnTheWire · 07/03/2022 21:46

You often won't get insurance if you are awaiting test results.
I think it's no good using comparison sites for travel insurance with pre existing conditions.
Go onto a couple of specialist and a couple of regular insurers own websites and answer all the questions.
Mine was £170 for a week.
