UK holiday near bike trails and canoes?

Theforest · 27/02/2022 16:53

I want to book for a week somewhere in UK for the May half term. Any ideas? With kids 15 and 11, so moving into more activities.

Self catering, some bike hire nearby for easy bike trails, canoe hire for beginners. Swimming pool ideally.

Thanks

Windermere and grizedale forest?
Public pool around there also

Mostlyjustrunning · 27/02/2022 17:04

Aviemore

Fivemoreminutes1 · 27/02/2022 17:17

Kielder Waterside - canoeing is listed under the ‘Go Pro’ activities.

Forestdweller11 · 27/02/2022 17:26

Keilder?
Somewhere like dalby forest which has the bike trails and is close by the seaside plus North Yorkshire water park is a few miles down the road.

museumum · 27/02/2022 17:30

Aviemore or Peebles both fit your criteria perfectly.
But maybe not first choice if you live in Devon!

Mostlyjustrunning · 27/02/2022 17:33

@museumum it’s all uk Grin

Not a swimming pool but hire a boat on the Caledonian Canal. Plenty of cycle friendly tow paths and I'm sure somewhere will offer kayaking.

West Wales and Carmarthenshire/Ceredigion has all of that. The Long Barn near Llandysul may be a bit basic in terms of accommodation for you but there are caravan parks etc nearby and you’re about 20 minutes from Cardigan bay. Llandysul Paddlers offer all of the water based activities you could want and there are plenty of bike trails around the area
Including Brechfa Forrest. Also, if it rains there’s always Oakwood and Folly Farm.

How about the Wye Valley/Forest of Dean ? www.visitdeanwye.co.uk/stay/self-catering

lancslass17 · 27/02/2022 17:42

Whitemead in forest of dean has pool and there are bike trails not sure about canoeing, they have high ropes at beechenhurst

mumonthehill · 27/02/2022 17:45

West wales, canoeing on the Teifi from Cardigan. Learn to surf at NewGale, learn to wake board at Wild Lakes, learn to paddle board at Solva. Stay St David’s and have coasterring on your door step. Great places to eat as well!! If you want swimming etc you could try Bluestone.

TracyMosby · 27/02/2022 17:45

Waddow Hall in the Ribble Valley might work. It is a residential centre for Guides but open to the public in summer. Loads and loads of possible bookable activities.

mumonthehill · 27/02/2022 17:46

Oh and biking and water sports at Llys y Fran, Pembrokeshire

Theforest · 27/02/2022 18:08

Fab. Thanks. I will take a look at all these!! Look promising Smile

We qent to symonds Yat in the summer with similar age. No swimming pool but we canoed and cycled and walked and swam in the river (not always advised though). Was beautiful. Also lovely pub for meals...

undermilkjug · 27/02/2022 18:22

We went canoeing on the Wye last year which was brilliant. Perhaps a bit more lively than we'd expected but great. Lots of good
Mountain biking trails nearby and the Taff trail and brilliant hill walks on the Brecon Beacons.

CombatBarbie · 27/02/2022 18:27

Galloway activity centre in SW Scotland

Needcoffeecoffeecoffee · 27/02/2022 18:31

Peak district? You can canoe on the derwent.
Mount cook in matlock has lots of activities including a zip wire off the roof.
Loads of Bike trails (with hire)

garlictwist · 28/02/2022 11:26

I think Kielder has suffered a lot of storm damage so you might want to check online that the trails are still open.

candycane222 · 28/02/2022 11:34

The Forest of Dean has an excellent network of bike trails plus downhill (mountainbiking) trails for the more adventurous, with bike hire attached. Whitemead definitely has a pool - not massive but plus sauna I think), there is also a full-size pool in Lydney nearby, and one in Ross. Also one or two underground attractions for wet days should they arise (it's a former mining area - will nearly all former, still a bit of mining if you know where to look!) And the Wye with its canoing runs down the western side of the Forest - the Wye Valley is stunning in its own right. And there is a cycle trail along a fair bit of the river there too afaik

candycane222 · 28/02/2022 11:35

oh and there's a go ape, which also does segway hire in the forest

gogohm · 28/02/2022 11:35

Aviemore, all that and more.

gogohm · 28/02/2022 11:36

It has a train station (if you can get decent priced tickets)

bellac11 · 28/02/2022 11:37

Norfolk Broads, theres the Marriotts Way which is 26 miles out of Norwich, all traffic free, or Bure Valley cycle route which leads to the edge of the broads. We saw people canoing on the river yesterday while cycling.
