August Holiday somewhere not too hot
Candleabra · 22/02/2022 20:47
Finally hoping to go abroad this year. No flexibility on annual leave from work, one week booked in August.
Would like a family friendly holiday (teens), beach, swimming pool, bit of history in a town/village.
Somewhere like Crete would be perfect but will be just too hot in august.
Any ideas for destination?

South Brittany - lots of nice chalet sites with pools, lots of coves with nice beaches (good snorkelling!), pretty old villages & towns (eg Concarneau) and AMAZING prehistoric remains (around Carnac)
ModerationInEverything · 22/02/2022 21:08
We had the same dilemma, teen DD really didn't like it hot. We decided on a 7 night cruise around the fjords. Never been on a cruise before but we're looking forward to it.

I would say South Brittany too - some lovely beaches there. Most or Europe (with beaches) are very hot in Europe. There are some lovely areas in Germany around rivers, but even there it is pretty hot in August. Scandinavia?
zafferana · 25/02/2022 18:14
The coast of Portugal or the north coast of Spain aren't generally too hot, even in July/Aug, because the Atlantic works as a moderating influence on the weather. The Canaries too are around 28 degrees in summertime, so while sunny and hot, they're not baking like the southern Med can be.
Candleabra · 25/02/2022 18:54
Thanks some great suggestions.
Portugal - good point about the Atlantic vs med
France sounds good
And the Channel Islands, always wanted to go there

Madeira. It’s Portuguese but the island is out in the Atlantic Ocean and closer to Africa.
The climate is like Spring all year round.

The climate is like Spring all year round.
Ooo Madeira sounds nice.
I just want to sit and look at the sea!
Somewhere with a little village to explore. But Wi-Fi for the kids (realistic about teenage expectations!)
Any resort recommendations for Madeira?
Northernsoullover · 25/02/2022 19:21
Costa de luz? We went in August..Still hot but not unbearable.

I have actually been to CP in Holland and Belgium. Great holidays but fancied more of a seaside beach type hols.
marbeth · 25/02/2022 19:26
Funchal has plenty to explore. Cable car up to gardens. Also toboggan basket ride. Open decker tourist buses out to villages.
Cheermonger · 25/02/2022 19:31
The Vendee in France is great for teens, we took ours to St Jean de Monts a few years running in august and had a great time. Plenty to do, quite safe but cool. I’d go back like a shot.
Hoppinggreen · 25/02/2022 20:48
@Northernsoullover
We own a property there and it’s hit 40 degrees in August before
The breeze helps but it does get pretty warm
mamaduckbone · 25/02/2022 21:19
Sorry to hijack slightly but I want exactly the same as you OP! My teens have voted for Greece but I've never been - what sort of temperature would be expected at the end of July?
zafferana · 26/02/2022 07:58
This website is brilliant for telling you what the temp should be pretty much anywhere in the world in any given month. Greece and its islands varies a bit depending on where you go: www.weather2travel.com/greece/july/?r=
zafferana · 26/02/2022 08:00
Bear in mind though @mamaduckbone that it could be much hotter. It's not uncommon for it to be upper 30s in Greece in July/Aug and that is possible in other places too. We once went to northern Spain in July, thinking it would be mid-20s, and there was heatwave so it was 40.
Wiennetta · 26/02/2022 08:21
Azores. Beautiful islands, loads to do and average temp in august is around mid-20s.
Wiennetta · 26/02/2022 08:23
Although admittedly the beaches aren’t amazing in the Azores. Lots of hot springs though!
rookiemere · 26/02/2022 08:28
Morzine, France - ski location in winter, in summer loads of outdoor activities and a municipal outdoor pool and mountain biking. Word of caution though after my recent ski apartment experience, book from an English operator such as Simply Morzine unless you want to spend your last day cleaning.
We went a few years ago with DS and a pal and stayed in a hotel through Simply Morzine and it was a fab holiday as we're not great with super high temperatures either.
ReviewingTheSituation · 26/02/2022 08:28
It certainly wasn't like Spring in Madeira when we went in early Sept... it was properly hot in the south (admittedly cooler in the north, but the south was a better base). Great holiday destination though!
TizerorFizz · 26/02/2022 08:54
@mamaduckbone
I find most places are 5degrees hotter than guidebooks. Greece in July - expect 35 C.
TizerorFizz · 26/02/2022 08:57
@Candleabra
I would really say Normandy or Brittany are great in August. Super busy though! Vendee is flat. We prefer towns in Brittany but it’s subjective, obviously. Or try Sweden or Denmark. Anywhere south of Brittany is hot. Breezes might help but they are not guaranteed.
