Far flung, exciting for kids

I have a 9 year old and a 12 year old, we are looking for a far flung holiday that would entertain two extroverts who love adventure style activities - but would provide the feel of the tropics that we love. Where would you go?

We've done Borneo, Sri Lanka and Kenya at those ages. All truely memorable and successful.

Stokey · 04/02/2022 22:37

We went to.Costa Rica just before the pandemic when my two were 8 and 10. It was fantastic. We did it independently and did a fair bit of driving to fit it all in but such a great experience. We did snorkelling in the Caribbean, white water rafting, zip lining and hot springs near the volcano and surfing and horse riding on the Pacific side. Lots of wildlife too.
At the time BA were flying direct which they seemed to have stopped now, but hopefully they'll start again.

Sri Lanka. Loads there. Wildlife, safari, beaches, history/ culture

We have had amazing holidays with our kids to-
Nepal
Egypt
New Zealand
Norway
Barbados
Sailed the Atlantic from U.K. to Boston and U.K. to Caribbean
Sailed from U.K. to Sardinia

Many happy and challenging experiences

@Disabrie22

Thanks so much - I have some inside information that children will need to be triple jabbed to enter America
Please could you respond to my question on this?

I'd go to Costa Rica and do the super lekke safari at rafiki. Best family holiday we ever did and fits the bill exactly

At many places suggested tropical vaccinations will be needed as well

@Sortingfinances2 - ooh please would you tell me about Sri Lanka? Who did you go with? What did you do?
veiledsentiments · 05/02/2022 08:37

Sri Lanka is great. Lovely beaches in the south, tea plantations in the middle at Ella. Yalla National park where you see elephants, and leopards, and Sigaria in the north. Lots to do. Roads can be fairly rubbish though, and it can take a while to travel. There is also an elephant sanctuary not far out of Colombo. Have been a fair few times. Love it.

Pinotwoman82 · 05/02/2022 08:41

Yes what is this about being triple jabbed for America? We are meant to be going in July, one teen is double jabbed but the other 2 are too young

BunnyNumNum · 05/02/2022 08:43

Zimbabwe/zambia/Botswana was amazing when our kids were that age.

Disabrie22 · 05/02/2022 08:54

I can’t say more - but a reliable source has told me that America will expect children to be triple jabbed to enter. I can’t see that info anywhere in the news etc so whether it will pan out I don’t know. Most of the UK wouldn’t be able to enter if that was the case so whether it will actually happen who knows?

I've been researching Costa Rica and also the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico.

Both sound perfect for what you're looking for. Both have beaches.

Mexico has Cenotes, (underground swimming pools) and Mayan ruins.

Costa Rica has hanging bridges, zipwires and lots of wildlife.

We're planning a big trip in a couple of years and I'm debating between the two.

lilyfire · 05/02/2022 09:10

We took our kids to Malaysia at similar ages and they loved it. A few days in Kuala Lumpur at nice but reasonably priced hotel - rooftop swimming pool. We ate lots - food is great and shopped a bit and saw temples and monkeys. Couple of days in Malacca then on to Perhentian island. They did scuba diving, snorkeling and saw little sharks and turtles and baby turtles hatching on the beach. Then couple of days in the jungle, treks and river trips and swimming, rafting in the river/waterfalls. Went to an elephant sanctuary. We didn’t need any tropical jabs.

I've just booked a tour in Costa Rica for me and 12 yo DS in August. I looked at a few different operators and in the end chose Rickshaw Travel. 2 weeks, 4 locations, turtle watching, kayaking, ziplining, cloud forest hikes, volcano, thermal springs, night time excursion in rain forest, beach - £3,600 plus £1k on flights.

Stokey · 05/02/2022 10:56

@BunnyNumNum did you go on organised tours for Botswana etc or did you book independently, flights and then lodges?

I'm also considering India with my two, jungle & beach, but they're not letting Brits in at the moment.

RishiRich · 05/02/2022 11:31

I'm taking my similarly-aged DC to Costa Rica this summer. I booked the TUI Grand Tour with a week on the beach afterwards in the end, after looking at various independent and tour options. They seemed like the safest bet in terms of Covid restrictions. We were supposed to go last year but CR was on the red list. TUI rebooked us for this summer and gave us a free room upgrade so I'm pleased so far.

We went to Mexico (Yucatan) last year and that was incredible. So much to do and history absolutely everywhere we went. We toured the Mayan ruins, went snorkeling with turtles, swam in cenotes, went on an underground river tour, ATVs, zip lining, cycling. We were there for 10 days but could easily have done another week.

As far as I can tell, the difference between the offer in Yucatan and CR is that Mexico has the history while Costa Rica has the wildlife.

Borneo or a safari

Oh wow I want to do your Mexico holiday. Snorkelling with turtles!!!! Who did you go with?
RishiRich · 05/02/2022 14:41

@hivemindneeded we booked an AI with TUI, hired a car and took ourselves on day trips. There was a water sports place on the hotel beach and we booked the turtle snorkeling with them. They picked us up in a boat right from the hotel, cruised down the coast and then the guide led us to the best spots. We saw loads of fish, 4 huge turtles and 3 big sting rays. Amazing. The turtles were just like cows, munching away on the sea grass. We could snorkel off the beach at the hotel too and saw lots of fish, coral etc. Great fun.

ImInStealthMode · 05/02/2022 14:42

Costa Rica 100%

It's the best place I've ever been and fits the bill for exciting adventure perfectly.
