New York this Christmas?

What do you reckon the chances are the US will allow UK tourists to travel this winter? I'm hoping to book NYC for DH's 30th mid December.

Can’t see it happening myself. I’m expecting widespread wfh and circuit breaker lockdowns.

Honestly I think it's very slim America will open up to us this year, I was thinking they might summer 2022 but even then I don't know. I might be completely wrong - if it doesn't open back up would a mini break to London or paris be possible? They're big cities and lovely at Christmas too.

I would not bet on it and sadly I cannot see the US opening its borders to either UK or European citizens anytime soon. I would instead look at a city break elsewhere.

My sister had booked to go to NY with her family this Christmas. The travel agents refunded her 2 weeks ago as it can't go ahead.Sad

No way, I didn’t even think you can travel to the US yet, and they won’t accept AZ as a vaccine either.

I don’t expect to be visiting for sometime yet.

Highly unlikely I’m afraid.

Isn't it only some AZ they don't recognise?

Ones manufactured in India?

We promised our DS we would take him to NY for his 21st. He went with his school when he was 15 but they stayed in a grotty youth hostel so we promised him a bit of luxury this time round. He was 21 last December and we are still waiting. I wish I could tell him we will get there this year but I honestly can't see it happening.

Thanks all. I hoped this wouldn't be the case but think we need to be realistic.

Any nice green list city breaks you can recommend with a Christmas vibe? We live in Edinburgh and are already taking the kids to London for October half term. Kids are not coming on the December trip!

Iceland would be nice and a chance of seeing the northern lights.

I live in New York and while I don't see the US opening their borders for UK citizens... I did meet an English Granny the other day who snuck in via Croatia... so where there's a will, there's a way! WinkGrin

Lisbon and Porto are great cities with brilliant restaurants and nightlife and you might also get some sunshine.

Friends went to NYC one Xmas and it was so cold they couldn't stay outside for long.

I’m booked to go to NYC at Easter. I don’t think it will go head. I suspect it will be summer before any trips happen in 2022.

@Thesaltandthesea its not beng brazen as long as you spend 15 days outwith the UK (and other banned countries) you can enter the USA, plenty of people are going thru croatia, turkey, mexico and now canada

costs a lot in time off work and money so worth it for some but not me

We are also due to go to NYC in April I imagine we will be postponing.

We went to NYC mid November a few years ago, and tried to go for a walk one evening after dinner. I've honestly never experienced such cold winds in my entire life. It actually took your breath away, and we lasted around 60 seconds outside the hotel. The doorman was pissing himself laughing at us as we ran back inside again and said that he loved Brits and their amazing optimism!!

I am meant to be going April as well as a pp. I booked as soon as flights opened and prices have gone up a fair bit since. I was already pushing my budget so I cannot decide whether to just rebook for October half term when flights open or hold off and keep my fingers crossed. Anything after October is t really an option as my daughter will be having GCSEs and I don't really want to go summer as we hate the heat.

Things have changed massively in 6 months so will they change again.

More than unlikely. Sorry.

Not going to happen. The US isn't going to open their border to Brits any time soon.

Why aren’t the US opening their borders though - sorry for my naivety? We are much more backed than they are and with lower cases? Also same delta variant. It seems to me that Biden and Trump aren’t that dissimilar after all Hmm
