What inappropriate places have you accidentally taken your kids to (lighthearted)

Went away to a UK costal town at the weekend. Said town has a pebble beach. The waiter while we were having tea have us directions to a Sandy beach that the kids would probably enjoy more.

Driving back to the premier inn at about 10 o'clock that night we decided to drive to the beach and see if it looked worth visiting in the morning as it was on the way home.

Pull into a car park with 5 or 6 cars parked all with their headlights blazing and realised we'd just driven our 3 year old and 6 month old into a notorious dogging site 🤦🏼‍♀️

So, make me laugh with the inappropriate and not very child friendly places you've ended up with your kids.

Oh god DS1 is obsessed with Halloween but also has suddenly become "so scared" of everything! Can see this happening to us this year

On holiday in rural France with then 4 year old ds we went into a small 'cafe' in a tiny village for lunch. All of the customers and staff giving us funny looks as we walked in, thought it was a bit odd that there were tv screens at every table. It was a bookmakers.

At the Pompidou Centre in Paris there was a sign over one of the doors saying that the works inside were for over 18s only. Unfortunately DD aged 3 made a beeline for the door and bolted through it with the security guard tutting and wagging his finger. I sprinted through to grab her back and found myself in a room that was wall to wall, floor to ceiling massive collages of vulvas! I just about managed to stop DD from stroking one that she said was 'nice and furry'. She had a huge tantrum about being removed and was carried out kicking and screaming with a lot of Parisians staring in disgust.

Not our holiday but DH was a member of staff on a school holiday. He was supervising a mixed group of 15 year olds when they got lost in Amsterdam and he ended up walking them through the Red Light District.

spotcheck · 26/07/2021 00:37

Not completely inappropriate, but some of the shops in Amsterdam

A literary tent at a festival in Ireland, stood at the entrance marveling at the awesome presence of Julian Cope who was being interviewed on stage, my two small boys fascinated. All good until he told a story of crapping in his pants on a flight - I had to drag them out laughing hysterically.

Greaterthanthesumoftheparts · 26/07/2021 00:54

I’ll start his by stating the I like pink, for context. A couple of time a year we drive through Hamburg. The first time we drove through, DH points out the biggest pinkest beholding you’ve ever seen, and says, hey Greaterthan, look at that, the Pink Palace, that’s a great place for you.
I pointed out to him that the pink palace is a brothel, a 5 story tall, 10 house wide brothel, with Sex written in the front multiple times in 6 foot talll letters.
DSS (11) has never forgotten the pink palace and mentions it every time we have to take that route and for several days before and after we see it!

Once on a beaver camp I lead the pack on a little hike through fields surrounding the camp site when we came across another camp. We skirted around the edges so as not to disturb until we came across a large group of men dressed in medieval costume and realised we’d interrupted a war reenactment complete with some kind of sacrifice (?!) involving 2 naked women surrounded by a ring of costumed, chanting men!!

I’d have worried for the women’s safety but as we hurried the visibly (and understandably !) shaken children passed one of them broke character to shout ‘don’t worry, all part of the fun!’ Shock those poor beavers never hiked again!

As someone who accidentally ended up walking through the Battle of Tewkesbury carrying a rolled-up rug while trying to find a stray child, I’m genuinely trying to think what on earth was being ‘re-enacted’ here!

In reply to the OP, my toddler ended up at one of Tracey Emin’s more sexually distraught exhibitions.

Stayed at a campground while travelling in Northern Territory, Australia. It was full of 'permenents' who were basically folks who had come out of prison, or had drinking problems or were transient. Not bad in itself but not exactly where you want your little kids camping.

My sister took me and my 10 year old to see John Cooper Clarke Shock.

On holiday in Tunisia with 9 year old dd. We were in Sousse and wandering around the alleyways of the old town when we took a wrong turn. Instead of the traditionally, conservatively dressed women we had seen everywhere else, there were a number of heavily made-up young women in mini skirts. A local man noticed us and told us to clear off. We didn't need to be told twice. Dd was completely oblivious to the fact that we'd stumbled into the local red light district.

fallfallfall · 26/07/2021 05:36

What I thought was a museum of vintage farm house furniture was a tribute to BDSM. I’m a damn prude. My heart was racing as I tried to usher the 9-12 year olds I was chaperoning out fast.
Girls were sports training in a large city, we finally had gotten off the bus and they wanted to wander a bit…

HummingBeeBox · 26/07/2021 06:33

I accidentally took my Nan to a play where two teenage girls were acting out position of the month on a bed from I think Just 17 magazine. It was a brilliant play and that wouldn't be a problem now but I was 13 at the time and was absolutely mortified.

Not us..but family friends took us to Brighton beach ... got the shock of my life seeing so many men (and women!) stark bollock naked...didn't know it was a nudist beach...they had packed a pack lunch and everything! family friends just turned a blind eye...

Erm, Brighton isn't a nudist beach. Maybe there's a small area that is but for the most part it's just your average beach for people in swimsuits!

When visiting my dsis she suggested we take the kids to a castle which had a massive fairy theme and rides for the kids. Her kids were 6, 5 & 3, mine were 3 and 1,

We travelled for about half an hour, queued, paid and when we got in it wasn't a fairy themed castle it was a museum full for medieval torture stuff.

Kids still enjoyed it though 😁

ceeveebee · 26/07/2021 07:18

When my sister and 9 year old niece came to stay with us in London we booked front row tickets for a musical called Avenue Q which looked like it was for children, all acted by sesame- street type puppets. It was definitely not for children - puppets singing about porn, having puppet sex and generally about as unsuitable as could be!!

Notavegan · 26/07/2021 07:19

Walked in for coffee and discovered it was their house... after they served us coffee. It was in Israel

sandgrown · 26/07/2021 07:46

Booked a hotel when joining a cruise ship in Hamburg . The hotel was at the top of the Reeperbahn. When we went out to find a restaurant 10 year old DS was speechless!

DH was taking his Scouts on a night hike. They did all the usual prep such as a route check a few days before. Arranged for another leader to provide hot chocolate halfway along the route (a few possible lay bys identified)

On the night...approaching first possible lay by... can see a few cars parked up. Scouts start running excitedly...

DH thinks the doggers got a bigger shock when a group of kids started running at them... they high tailed it out of there pretty fast!
Then the leaders had to field questions exactly why a group of adults were meeting in a countryside lay by at 10pm...

On holiday in Northern Thailand, hotel staff kept telling us to go the local Opium Museum but not to worry it was sponsored by the Queen, and mainly about farming.

Which in fairness the first half was, the second half was a series of scenes using mannequins covering drug taking, prostitution, imprisonment, overdose, hospitalisation, rehab and death in pretty graphic detail.

My two were relatively young so perplexed but not really that bothered, following us through the exhibits was a British mum (thinking stereotypically naice) with young teens. Her voice was getting increasingly shrill as her kids questioned her on each 'vignette' - I swear the older one in particular was doing it on purpose.

I remember being about 10-11 when we went on a family trip to Amsterdam.
For some bizarre reason DPs thought it was a good idea to walk through Red Light district .I was fascinated by the ladies in the windows and asked DM why they were there. She replied that it was lingerie shops and they were advertising the goods.

I thought this was a great idea and it took me about another four years to realise the truth.

We lived in a tiny village in the middle of nowhere when I was little. The main employer in the area was a nuclear power station - pretty much everyone’s parents worked there.

In year one, we went on a special trip to the cinema to see a film that was made in the local area. Very exciting, the whole school (about 20 of us!) went. It was a disaster movie about the power station blowing up.
