Will Italy drop the five day quarantine for Brits?

Trying to decide between the Caribbean or Tuscany. I’d prefer Tuscany because it’s a short flight. We are both fully vaccinated (pfizer).
Looking at late August. Only for a week, so 5 days quarantine would mean we’d go elsewhere.

We see that they currently have a 5 day quarantine for Brits because of Delta variant (fair enough). Does anyone have any insight on if they will drop this by August?

Italian hotels probably don’t ‘need’ Brits in August, as that’s when the Italians holiday.
The situation here looks to get far worse in terms of numbers, before it gets better, so the Italians aren’t likely to relax because of that.

Equally, the delta wave is now taking ground on mainland europe, so it is a matter of time before their cases shoot up. Whether or not they will keep measures relaxed or go rogue like the UK is another thing.

Anyway, do you think that they will allow in Brits without quarantine?

At the moment it is much tougher for Italian residents who are travelling to the UK - longer quarantine, vaccination not recognised. Unless they change those rules first I don't think Italy is going to make it easier for Brits (where there are far more cases) to come to Italy.

indiraisindia · 12/07/2021 11:04

That’s completely fair enough @Zerogravity

The UK Govt is being particularly pernicious. I can’t blame the Italians not wanting to allow Brits, if we are being unfair with them.

Honestly, I can't see things being relaxed mfor Brits, I can only see them going the other way and getting more restricted. Our rates are out of control and will only get worse if restrictions are lifted as planned on 19th. This is deemed an acceptable risk in the UK because we have such a high percentage of the population vaccinated. Places like Italy and France havent managed such a high level of vaccination and so need to protect their population. Just my opinion of course, but I can only see things getting worse not better for travel over the summer.

JorisBonson · 12/07/2021 11:32

Following. We've booked flights for BIL's wedding in Northern Italy in September. We thought we might as well book while the flights were cheap, and we can suck up the cost if it comes to it. Both double jabbed.

Geamhradh · 14/07/2021 21:39

Also following. Am a double vaccinated Brit living in Italy, and want to come home, need to come home to deal with family stuff.
It's ridiculous, last summer when it was all back to normal here we had guests from the UK throughout the summer. Same guests want to come again but 5 days quarantine (or 10 for me if I come over there despite being fully vaxxed!!!) is ridiculous.
We're racing to vaccinate here (onto the teenagers now in most regions, ready for September) but I'd agree with Nootkah and say it's unlikely to change soon. Everyone us pretty gobsmacked at the 19th July thing tbh.

I read today that Italy would review the 5-day quarantine requirement for non-European countries (and the UK and Israel) on July 30th.

sm701 · 15/07/2021 23:05

Following with interest! We have two weeks booked in Italy from 6 august and are resigned to 5 days quarantine in a villa but would be so much better if rules relaxed for vaccinated adults. Fingers crossed. Italy May follow the rest of Europe who mostly have now favourable rules for vac... maybe wishful thinking!

Home06 · 16/07/2021 06:46

We are booked to go early August too. We won't go if quarantine isn't removed though. I'm hoping that it will be on 30 July but I am wondering about the reciprocal nature of this.

startingtosmileagain · 17/07/2021 13:17

I now think it is unlikely that the quarantine will be relaxed, if anything it will be extended or travel there could be stopped.

An advisor to the head of public health has quite forcibly said they should ban all flights to and from the UK.

I am watching with interest as the plan is to go on Friday!

If this makes a difference though, I spoke with the health authorities in Puglia (where I am going) yesterday and they said they will not be carrying out any checks on people quarantining!!at the end of the quarantine you just need to test yourself and you don’t need to inform authorise of outcome. Obviously they expect you to continue your quarantine if you test positive.

What is the point in a quarantine if it isn’t enforced! Unbelievable!

JorisBonson · 17/07/2021 13:23

Yeah I'm wondering if we'll be allowed to go at all. We are only going for 3 nights so not even enough time to quarantine.

Home06 · 24/07/2021 00:02

Is anyone still holding out for this?

Geamhradh · 24/07/2021 00:15

From 6th August everyone also needs Green Pass (Covid Vax) or negative test from age 12 upwards for restaurants indoors, museums etc. Announced yesterday evening.

Wannabefree2 · 24/07/2021 07:33

I have flights booked on 20th August for 4 days to Verona to visit a friend. They don’t have new info either, nobody seems to know if quarantine will be dropped. I’m hoping that our government will recognise the EU vaccination certificate and our NHS one will be reciprocated. Not holding my breath though!

OhRosalind · 24/07/2021 08:52

I read that they will be reassessing it but I think that quarantining is unlikely to end as rules generally are tightening not relaxing. Especially when the U.K. rules are even stricter! And August is when Italians go on holiday, plus anecdotally my town in Tuscany is already full of tourists, but from within the EU.

I have family coming but staying for 3 weeks so they’re prepared to do the 5 days, and then quarantine again when they get home.

I’m not sure what the new green pass rules will mean for U.K. visitors though.

Wannabefree2 · 24/07/2021 09:20

@OhRosalind Sadly I think the same. I can’t really see that quarantine will be relaxed and I’m not really surprised. Rates in England are so much higher than Italy. I was so excited to be going too but I’ve started to resign myself to the fact it probably won’t happen.
If your relatives are fully vaccinated , I’m pretty they don’t have to quarantine on return to the U.k though, which is something!

Yes, we've got tourists too but I've not seen or heard any English voices, unsurprisingly.
SEmum3 · 24/07/2021 10:03

I'm holding out Hope the green pass will be available for vaccinated by time we go 6 august.... it sounds like it might be to me.

Home06 · 24/07/2021 11:55

I think that something is being negotiated for mutual recognition of vaccines too @SEmum3

Harrysdoneit · 24/07/2021 16:08

We are hoping so. Also travelling to Puglia in August.....keeping fingers crossed although we are there for 2 weeks so can isolate if necessary.

bellabride · 25/07/2021 14:42

Watching with interest, as I’m hoping to go on a short break to Rome in September. Have held off booking until we know whether the quarantine thing is being extended beyond 30th July.

Zerogravity · 25/07/2021 14:50

Where I am in northern Italy I have noticed quite a few French and Dutch tourists, no Britishines as yet. The other day I was talking to a friend in English and I heard someone make a remark about English tourists - little does she know I haven't been to the UK in 2 years!

bellabride · 28/07/2021 10:56

Still not heard anything new on this: I guess that anyone due to go to Italy from Saturday onwards, and if it's not practical for them to quarantine for 5 days, still wouldn't know if they were going or not?

Geamhradh · 28/07/2021 11:15

I think the next announcement is due 30/7.
Tbh, unless there's a quid pro quo with the UK dropping the 10 day quarantine for (even double vaccinated) Italians, I can't see it being lifted.
There is a UK announcement due as well though according to the press, so you never know.

Sm701 · 28/07/2021 12:00

There's talk of an announcement today that uk may drop quarantine for eu double vac, so I'm still hopeful!!

Home06 · 28/07/2021 12:11

Me too. There is news of EU vaccinations being recognised by UK in quite a few papers today.
