Things to do near Fakenham, Norfolk
TopHat6 · 11/07/2021 15:29
Hi. Looking for information on things to do near Fakenham, Norfolk. We will be on holiday there in July. Kids are 14 and 11. We would like to ride, go to the beach, have a pub lunch, etc. Where do you recommend to do those things and what else would be good to do in the area? Thanks

The Pigs in Edgefield... amazing food and a good play area.
Holt is pretty, and there is a small woods/country park.
Bewilderwood is worth a visit.
The coast isn't far.

Seal trip from Blakeney Point. Crabbing in lots of places....Wells, cromer pier, Blakeney Quay....

Bewilderwood is great but I think 14 and 11 a little old.....I took 8, 10 and 12 last October and 12 was at the top end and size really.....mainly because there are lots of younger kids so he couldn't run around in the way he'd like for fear of knocking or hurting them.

Holkham; Brancaster beach, and crab rolls on the quayside at Brancaster quay (a little further along than the beach); Wells for some shopping and wandering about (they have a good arts/community centre which was very clean and Covid-safe when we went last autumn); seal trips on a boat if they’re open!; Felbrigg Hall; lots of nice fish and chips by the sea!

Also Gressenhall workhouse and museum isn’t too far away and that’s very interesting.

The seal boat trips (if they’re running) are iirc at Blakeney.

Best seaside resort near Fakenham is Cromer: paddle-board hire and that sort of thing available. A bit nearer to Fakenham, Sheringham has shops, pubs, cafes, beach etc but prom is a bit ugly and you have to get over the stones to get to the sandy bits of the beach. However, the North Norfolk Coast path on the cliffs between Sheringham and Weybourne is beautiful.
Best beach is probably Wells: it gets busy but is close to (busy, expensive) car park, toilets and cafe. For vast, nearly empty beaches a fair trek from facilities, Holkham, Cley and Burnham Overy Staithe.
No shortage of pubs. I like the Hunny Bell in Hunworth and the Three Horseshoes in Briston, but there’s lots along the coast as well which I haven’t got around to trying yet.
The seal trips to Blakeney Point are great! There are about 4 different companies running them, all from Morston Quay near Blakeney. They do get booked up in the school holidays, so you’ll need to book ahead.
I don’t know about riding but I have seen horses on the beach at Cromer and Holkham, so might be worth an internet search.

Hedda we are going back again this coming autumn and I’m really hoping the seal trips will be running then (DD was really disappointed when we went as they were all not running b/c of Covid). Hopefully the lifting of the restrictions means they are able to run now.

Don't know if they're on this year but there's usually a series of organ recitals in the church in cromer. Sounds a bit dull but a day on the pier crabbing, some fish and chips on the prom and then into the church to listen to lovely music as the sun set through the stained glass windows, with the aroma of sea, salt and hot happy sunscreen heavy kids ... is a nice memory.

@irresistibleoverwhelm
They’re running now with reduced capacity on the boats. Some of them run into early November, so (assuming no further lockdown changes 🤞) you should be OK.

That’s great - we’re there for half term, so hopefully we can see the seals!!

Holt is a nice Georgian town for a mooch about antique shops, and Byfords for lunch but not much for 11 and 14 year olds. Norwich really isn't far - Norwich Castle and shopping. Hunstanton is very traditional seaside with funfair and arcades.
