Will you go abroad?

DH and I have been discussing our holiday booked for France in July and we’re just not sure.

Whilst we’re desperate to go on holiday, with rates unpredictable once things start opening up again, and officials saying foreign travel will still be ill advised even when it’s legal, it feels almost irresponsible to go? I don’t know. What’s your stance?

I really, really want to but we've had to do a large & unexpected piece of work on the house that's taken all of the holiday money.

I do wonder if it might not be great anyway, a bit like things are here, everything is a bit weird and not quite back to normal. Planning to go somewhere really lovely/exciting in 2002 though.

TokyoSushi · 04/05/2021 14:40

2022!!

NoBetterthanSheShouldBe · 04/05/2021 14:42

No. Hoping to visit family abroad next year, but only if the global situation improves.

usernotfound0000 · 04/05/2021 14:57

We do have a trip booked later in the year to Disneyland Paris, we booked it 18 months ago. We haven't cancelled yet and if we can go with only testing required then we will, if any self isolation is required then we will look to move to next year. We aren't looking to book anything else and will holiday in the UK in the summer.

Skinnytailedsquirrel · 04/05/2021 15:00

No way. Anyone going overseas needs to remember rules can change at the last minute so you may be stuck there. Look at what's happened in India.

Dontforgetyourbrolly · 04/05/2021 15:01

Yes

Tambora · 04/05/2021 15:01

No.

Although we have family in the USA who very much want to come here as soon as they can.

99victoria · 04/05/2021 15:05

@Skinnytailedsquirrel

The Government have indicated that they won't change the rules at short notice

Gothichouse40 · 04/05/2021 15:10

I personally won't be going abroad this year. Between the Indian variant now being in USA and many countries behind with vaccination, I don't think it's a good idea, but that's me. What I would say is anyone wanting to go abroad, please do check the Foreign Office website. If you go abroad and the FO say it's not ok, your travel insurance will not cover you. If you take ill in another country, you may find yourself with some hefty medical bills. Please do check and also make sure your travel insurance covers you for Covid whether cancellation, outbreaks etc.

Chanel05 · 04/05/2021 15:10

Fingers crossed for Florida in August.

Hairbrush123 · 04/05/2021 16:07

Definitely. I have booked the USA for late July and if it’s on the green list and the US borders reopen - I will definitely go.

Figgygal · 04/05/2021 16:12

Most traditional holiday destinations are going to be in the amber zone and require quarantine afterwards there was a chap on the radio this morning saying he would couldn’t wait to go on holiday but he wouldn’t be quarantining on his return because he didn’t have holiday from work to allow him to do so.

that right there is exactly what is wrong with allowing foreign travel

PresentingPercy · 04/05/2021 18:39

Holiday booked for November - it was also booked for November 2020. Can’t say I’m hopeful of going. Red at the moment.

anappleadaykeeps · 04/05/2021 22:54

Strictly keeping to UK this summer - Norfolk coast and Peak District.

I do have a ski trip booked in December - hopefully will be able to go, but already bracing myself for cancellation.

FinnegansWhiskers · 04/05/2021 23:00

We have cancelled our holiday abroad this year. We have booked a secluded cottage in West Wales instead and we are so looking forward to getting away. It’s been a long year 😏 We need to do what we can for ourselves, and keep others safe.

@Itisablessing

The problem with Italy is the volume of travellers. It makes it more risky. Not sure about their infection numbers either, they have gone down very very quickly, suspiciously so some might say, given they are adjacent to France! Travelling this year is a very bad idea, and I hope the gov find some backbone.
Numbers are going down because borders are closed for non essential travel and most regions are still orange (curfews, schools only at 50% capacity, compulsory mask wearing, restaurants and bars only open for takeaway) The vaccination programme is still behind the UK but is now on a 7 day X 12-14 hours a day mass programme in most regions.

Italy will definitely be allowing Brits in this summer.

Geamhradh · 06/05/2021 08:42

The article in the Telegraph on one of the other threads about this said Italy, Spain, Greece etc will closely follow behind Malta and Portugal once the traffic light system is up and running.
I have no doubt all of those will be welcoming tourists this summer. I'd hesitate before booking anything after September.

zobalina77 · 06/05/2021 08:54

I've cancelled my holiday to Turkey. It was originally booked in 2019 for summer 2020 and then I moved it to this year as I naively thought things might be more normal. Luckily I've got all my money back so have booked a week in Wales and one in Devon in August. Am saving the rest of the money and going to book for next year (hopefully!) nearer the time.

Lolarosemama · 06/05/2021 15:18

Really good to hear people’s thoughts, thank you! My husband and I have chatted and have decided to cancel France.
We’ve got a week in June with both sets of parents in Cornwall, so we’ve tagged an extra week on for just us instead! Dreaming of going abroad next year for now!

No. I am not worried about the virus. I am worried about the thought of very long queues in airports, restrictions in the country we would be visiting and the situation changing while we are abroad e.g. quarantine suddenly becoming compulsory. I like holidays to be enjoyable and it just seems too much hassle to make it worthwhile.

Figgyboa · 07/05/2021 01:35

Yes, fully vaccinated. Live in the US, heading to Mexico for a week

DramaAlpaca · 07/05/2021 01:35

I'm going to wait until next year. I'd love to go abroad but I don't fancy airports and planes at all at the moment.

Havenholidayhelp · 07/05/2021 01:41

UK only for us this year - just seems sensible / precautionary to keep things on the right trajectory in the UK as life is moving closing to normality here

Even if you fly to a green country you will still be mixing with other travellers in airports.

I look forward to international travel again once quarantine, tests & isolating aren't looming concerns.

Parker231 · 07/05/2021 08:28

Which countries are which colour traffic light are due to announced today. Hopefully can see our families by the end of the month!

KatGrl · 07/05/2021 08:45

We have booked 3 trips but will only go if it's allowed of course! Everything is fully refundable :)
