Is November a nice time to visit Venice?

Needing a break of some kind and wondering whether Venice would be nice in November. Would it be nice for a short trip with dd (7)?

Can anyone recommend a nice place to stay?

Hi Sandy, we went to Venice in October once and it was wet and cold, very grey. I would aim for somewhere warmer. I've just been asking about Malaga - for January (see thread - shorthaul too!) and it's meant to be nice and mild all winter, Berlin has direct flights too with Easyjet.

SSSandy2 · 22/10/2007 10:41

hmm you could be right there, a bit of sun would be nice. Maybe wandering about Venice would be less interesting for dd than for me too.

How are you? Did you have a nice break from school?

Are you thinking of a weekend just or longer?
Not a very nice break from school, dd had a mysterious fever and was out for 3 days so just sat about really.

Rosa lives in Venice, I can direct her here for good tips. I think Venice is an excellent trip for a 7 yr old, think the vaporetti, gondole, no cars, the bridges, etc it's so magic there. But maybe not the best place if you are looking for sunshine.

admylin · 22/10/2007 10:54

I agree about Venice being a wonderfull place to visit - excellent things to see but it was just so miserable when I went once in October, rain and everything was grey. Sort of missed the charm of the waterways and the bridges.

francagoestohollywood · 22/10/2007 10:56

Indeed, and being such a humid city it feels even colder (I went once for New Year's Eve, it was grey and cold, still incredibly fascinating, but for a first trip with a child I'd choose a sunnier time to go)

SSSandy2 · 22/10/2007 11:06

ok girls you convinced me. I really like the idea of going to Venice but if it is going to be cold, grey and depressing, I might as well just stay here, huh?

Sorry to hear dd has been sick, admylin. I have something horrible too. Just can't get rid of it but thankfully dd is healthy at the moment. We didn't go away last week, felt too sick but we trotted out for a few little day-trips. Babelsberg is nice, have you ever been out there?

OP posts:
admylin · 22/10/2007 11:35

No never made it out to Babelsberg but dd went with school, she liked it. Are you doing anything to do with bonfire night at your dd's school? Would be nice to introduce my dc to that as they have never seen it before.

SSSandy2 · 22/10/2007 11:41

One of the (English) dads asked about that at the parent-teacher evening but the German parents didn't like the idea of burning an effigy. So no, I don't think they'll do anything. I suppose it does all sound a bit odd to people who don't grow up in that tradition. I always enjoyed Guy Fawkes as a dc.

Habe ich mir schon gedacht!

SSSandy2 · 22/10/2007 11:44

any news on the job front?

OP posts:
admylin · 22/10/2007 11:48

No not yet and we're thinking of sending an email to ask how it's going.

SSSandy2 · 22/10/2007 11:50

Any news about the interview for America?

By the way,do you think your dc might like to try bible study or is that not really your kind of thing? Dd loves it, she goes Sundays from 5-6.30pm.

OP posts:
admylin · 22/10/2007 11:53

Yes, it's meant to be in Malaga in January which is why we were thinking of all going for a little break. It looks very nice (on my thread about Malaga in January I got a nice link to a place outside Malaga, would love to try it)

admylin · 22/10/2007 11:55

Yes they would LOVE it. At the moment they listen to a CD Kinderbibel but it's so strange in German. I can't translate some of it like Bundeslade for example and all the classic biblical names are so different sounding! But they love it.

SSSandy2 · 22/10/2007 12:03

Oh I KNOW about the Bible, they get all the names wrong too I sent you a mail with the address etc. We could meet up if you go but let me know because some weeks, dh takes her.

Malaga sounds very nice. Bet that would be a nice trip. Especially in January, it's one of the worst months here I think, Jan-Feb
Well Jan-Feb-March-April really...

THis has NOTHING to do with Venice anymore but anyway, did you know the Anglican church is having a booksale on the 27th October from 10-4pm? We'll go and have a mosey around. Do you know it? It's St. George's on Preussenallee (SBhf Heerstr).

OP posts:
admylin · 22/10/2007 12:12

I know! Will try to email you

slim22 · 22/10/2007 12:14

it's not grey and depressing, it's foggy and mysterious and romantic!!!!

For DD, vaporetto and gondola trips and the biennale gardens ( vaporetto giardini 4 stops south of sam marco) + fab Ice cream parlours.

Lots more to see/do ( and sunshine) in Rome I guess.....

Anna8888 · 22/10/2007 12:19

Venice is lovely but the sunshine is not guaranteed in November and Venice in the rain is not fun, especially for a 7 year old.

How about Marrakesh? Essaouira? Sicily (Syracuse)? Capri/the Amalfi coast?

WendyWeber · 22/10/2007 12:38

DS2 is there on a school trip this week. Temps v like here, wet today and forecast is rain most of the week so worse than here

webcam (you can see the water sitting on the parked boats in the foreground)

(It's a foodie trip though so they will be indoors a lot of the time anyway, and they had free time yesterday when it was sunny, and will again on Friday when forecast is sunny too. But I don't think Nov would be much fun! And they get most of the high tides Oct-Feb, when the non-canal bits are under water as well )

SSSandy2 · 23/10/2007 08:15

ah ok you convinced me. Not Venice then.

Sounds like a nice school trip Wendy.

Anna, I worked in Morocco before dd was born so I know the country quite well. Feeling adventurous so I fancy something different. Sicily sounds good, keep meaning to go there. Have you been?

OP posts:
SSSandy2 · 23/10/2007 08:19

That's true, Slim, there's always Rome. Dd is a real Rome freak these days so she might enjoy that. Since I live in a big city anyway, it wouldn't really be my choice for a restful break though IYSWIM?

Anna8888 · 23/10/2007 09:17

SSSandy2 - yes, I've been to Sicily - I went there for Christmas 2002 and stayed just outside Syracuse, which is absolutely beautiful
