Anyone else now going to France?

Just wanting a quick poll on what people's thoughts are about going to France with current lockdown relaxations? - Euro tunnel, caravan 2 x hotel stop offs en route with 2 DC's .....All facilities on sites open apparently but gel, masks etc needed. Wondering will it be empty? Hard work and weird to follow rules? What would you do? x

Why would you go somewhere that your government is advising against? We have cancelled ours.
Fink · 14/08/2020 07:58

@loveisagirlnameddaisy No, another company. I think they're called Alpha

TheWayOfTheWorld · 14/08/2020 08:00

@saltycat

Go to Brighton or wherever and order your cheese and wine to be delivered there from France! What could possibly go wrong? LOL

Not demeaning anyone, but it is all so complicated and a tad dangerous to you and your family now to travel for holidays abroad.

Hopefully it is only this year, I think most could cope. And if they can't well what can I say really.

Hmm This lack of critical thinking and hysteria about it being "dangerous" is ridiculous.

We are in rural France. We drove using Eurotunnel. We've been out 2x to the supermarket - DH went once and I went once, the other remaining at the villa with our DC. The supermarket is huge and very quiet, no queues or people bowling up and down the aisles. Lots of hand sanitiser and wipes, everyone wearing masks.

We are safer here and at less risk of getting the virus than we are where we in live in the U.K. and certainly in many of the U.K. holiday spots.

However, I recognise that the U.K. government can't look at the exact location of where we have all been and we were prepared for quarantine to be announced. Luckily it is not a problem for us but I am so sorry for people that either have to try and dash back today or can't come out at all Thanks

cathyandclare · 14/08/2020 08:01

Unfortunately I think passing through counts as the same. We were planning to go in Sept and happy to quarantine but it's all looking more and more difficult. Think DH may self combust without a holiday ( horrible time at work) but may have to change for the UK

EmmaCB1 · 14/08/2020 08:03

I guess there will be an announcement today, we’ll see. EU law doesn’t like reciprocation as a reason for doing things, so it may be a voluntary quarantine. And that wouldn’t change our plans to stay by the pool for most of the trip. It’s not like we’re planning to see the sites in Paris. But we have time to make a measured decision at least, I feel for those who don’t. And for those who have builders starting and no furniture!

Bezzi · 14/08/2020 08:09

@Greenbeanie88
Are you the one who had the builders coming in while you were away? I didn't realised you'd cancelled. What a nightmare!! Can you put a tent in the garden and buy some baguettes and wine and do your best to pretend?

We cancelled too (a week or so ago) we would have been on the ferry last night but not yet departed when the announcement came so no idea where that would have left us!!

pontypridd · 14/08/2020 08:11

How can quarantine be voluntary?

Is that really what France did last time?

Who would choose to quarantine if they were going on holiday?

Greenbeanie88 · 14/08/2020 08:18

@Bezzi & @EmmaCB1 - Yes that's us. It is gutting but we'll work something out. I feel slightly more at ease having made the decision as the whole 'unknown' of the situation was making me feel a bit on edge.

I know that our holiday was very safe and rural and we would have had a lovely time but we had to make the decision.
Our builders are lovely so we'll work something out with them. They're not in until early next week now so we have a few days to re-group.
I feel for our gite owner too - we've been onto them this morning and they are dealing with cancellations and people leaving early. There are no winners here.

And @squishee see the attached. I think if you don't stop you are ok. We will probably amend our route to do a last stop in Luxembourg for diesel before heading straight for eurotunnel. You aren't allowed out of your car at all

LaChatte · 14/08/2020 08:24

The secretary of state for European affairs has said that they will reciprocate, but that's a ridiculous reason to quarantine people so I don't think they will actually do it.

notimagain · 14/08/2020 08:24

How can quarantine be voluntary?

Why can't it be ? TBH seen from overseas the British version seems fairly voluntary.

Is that really what France did last time?

Yes it was.

pontypridd · 14/08/2020 08:34

Well that’s good. I hope it is voluntary.

I just don’t understand what the point is in reciprocating with a kind of cotton wool weapon (which this all seems to me to be)

Why would they bother? It’s not going to worry anyone if it’s voluntary is it?

carlyfrench · 14/08/2020 08:35

We should be on our way now. I had to go and tell the dcs we weren't going just as they'd gone to bed.

It honestly feels like a cruelly timed announcement. We didn't even book the bloody parking or pack until after the 6 pm news and there was zilch on there. Knowing yesterday morning would have made a big difference.

Bezzi · 14/08/2020 08:38

@carlyfrench how old are your dc?

Mine are 5 & 7 and took it really well when I told them they could choose a day trip somewhere each, any sweets they wanted in the shop plus one of those comics with the plastic tat and a night of camping out in the lounge.

I realise it would be harder to soften the blow with older kids Thanks

Limbolady · 14/08/2020 08:45

Just for information....my car insurance company have said to me that driving in a country against FCO advice would not invalidate my insistence. He made a note of this on my file.

Jilljams · 14/08/2020 08:50

@Thunderpunt I thought Luxembourg was already on the quarantine list?

Really? That's great news. Do you mind me asking who you are with?
carlyfrench · 14/08/2020 08:55

@Bezzi that's a good idea. Smile

They are older and this was part of a birthday treat for one of them - we were going to do a day trip to Monaco as he's obsessed with cars. Last year it was torrential rain on his birthday so I promised a better one this year and booked this in January.

Never mind, they will be ok. Just so conscious of how many disappointments they've had in the last few months but I guess this is giving everyone some resilience skills.

Jilljams · 14/08/2020 08:55

it’s the health insurance not being valid that worries me. In France the EHIC only covers 70% of cost as I understand it. Even for people planning to just travel through France/NL/Belgium/Lux etc you’d need valid insurance in case of accident, sudden illness etc

That's what the specialist insurance is for. We're getting Battleface which covers you for all those things

Lol didn't think to check that 🤦🏼‍♀️ Germany then? Need to see the mileage and whether we can do on a full tank of diesel.....

Limbolady · 14/08/2020 09:05

Loveisagirlnameddaisy : Admiral. It’s a new policy too.

We're getting specialist against FCO advice insurance. I think most of the people on here who are still planning to travel are.
Thunderpunt · 14/08/2020 09:08

Battle face came in at £218 for a family of four for 16 nights, France and one other country

loveisagirlnameddaisy · 14/08/2020 09:14

@limbolady cool, that's who we're with! Thank you
