Hi everyone. I am very luckily being taken to New York the first weekend in November by a friend. I wondered if any of you could recommend any hotels? I have been a couple of times but always left it to DH where to stay coz he knows NYC really well. Any ideas would be hugely appreciated. TIA.

I always stay at Morgans but it might be a bit tired by now. Ask for the cathedral room - you lie in the bath and look out over the rooftops.....

mumofelise · 13/10/2004 16:58

we stayed the new yorker on 8th avenue. it was quite cental and not too expensive. it's a favourite with air crew so it mist be ok.

I had a good stay at the Shelbourne Murray Hill . Nice roof bar at top and excellent location, i.e. a 10 minute walk max to Grand Central Station. You can get anywhere in Manhattan from there.

Also, Murray Hill is a chock-a-block with restaurants, bagelries, dry cleaning, liquor stores. . .it's quite neighborhood-y, so easy to find anything you need. And while not the most interesting neighborhood in NYC, there's a lot to be said for being in a neighborhood, as opposed to someplace completely chaotic like Times Square, AND for being so well-placed for any kind of transport (buses, trains, subways, taxis) you could need.

I'll be there in November, too! (But late November.)

spook, I've just stayed at the Alex. Clean contemporary decor (without being completely over the top cool like the mercer), flat screen tellys etc, really good size rooms, frette sheets and duvets, good location in midtown (east side). It is brand new so everything is still very fresh. Stayed there a couple of days by myself before dh joined me and it was perfect - felt v safe walking around at night. Highly recommended. Have stayed in many other places and this was the best so far (NY hotel rooms tend to be tiny, noisy, and really badly decorated in about 1989 - even the super luxe ones - this was a really nice change!)

codswallop · 13/10/2004 17:39

what are frette sheets?
wa shtat recommended by a mner pph?

soapbox · 13/10/2004 17:40

Spook - I've also stayed at teh Alex and loved it too!

You should make sure that you book at least a one bed suite - the rooms even the delux ones are nowhere near as nice!

codswallop · 13/10/2004 17:41

frtte?

soapbox · 13/10/2004 17:44

Frette - italian posh sheets with a high thread count. All posh hotels have taken to mentioning them if they have them in their promotional literature...

codswallop · 13/10/2004 17:50

is it a case of ponce attack?

beachyhead · 13/10/2004 17:52

whereabouts is the Alex????

princesspeahead · 13/10/2004 17:53

oooh, yes, soapbox recommended it to me originally, thank you soapbox.
3rd and 45th

spook · 13/10/2004 19:41

Oh buggar. Thankyou for all suggestions. PPH have just had very quick check on Alex (between stories!!) and there are no rooms with 2 beds. As this is a present the budget doesn't stretch to 2 rooms unfortunately. Buggar buggar because it does look absolutely gorgeous. I stayed at the Soho Grand with DH a couple of years ago but same thing. No twins-although you do get a goldfish on request. It's got to be worth sharing a bed with me to get a fish hasn't it?? That could read all wrong...

oh, that is annoying, isn't it?!
whatabout the benjamin? heard good things about it and it is in a similar bit of town (opp waldorf astoria so about ummmm 50th and lex?). haven't been to the rooms but it has a good bar.

have a look on tripadvisor.com as well, excellent site

motherinferior · 13/10/2004 20:31

I AM 41. And have never been to New York

Am actually very embarrassed about this.

krocket · 13/10/2004 20:39

MI that is shameful, demand that your DP/DH takes you at once

princesspeahead · 13/10/2004 21:03

MOTHERINFERIOR!

Shocked and outraged. Book yourself a bridget style minibreak IMMEDIATELY. lastminute.com is fine. It is lovely in October/Nov. GO!

spook · 13/10/2004 21:45

Motherinferior!! You can come with us. 3 in a bed and a goldfish. What a hoot
Thanks for more tips PPH!!

Spook - the other hotel we looked at staying at was the Libary Hotel. It sounded really nice with cheese and wine every evening and, yes you've guessed, lots of books

The rooms are on the smaller side cf with Alex but might be worth considering!

Have a look at the reviews on tripadvisor.com - agree with PPH that its a great site. citysearch.com is also good!

wizzysmum · 13/10/2004 23:23

Didn't particularly rate the UNPlaza - too far out and a bit businessy. We ended up getting cabs to and from everywhere. How about trying to get a deal at the W (lots around) - stayed at Times Square and it was great fun - lively and clubby and great Japanese close by. Westin Times Square is also very central but next time I fancy being on the park. Lucky you - wish I was there. I love it. Don't buy too much!

expatkat · 14/10/2004 00:41

Spook, are you looking for reasonably priced hotels, or off the charts posh/expensive hotels? I ask because the hotel I mentioned is not posh, and may very well have some of the drawbacks PPH mentions about NY hotels BUT it's quite New York-ish, in that it's a so-called "pre-war building," which is a style I happen to love and which is particular to New York. The interior, too, feels authentic, with lots of black & white photos of New York landmarks & architectural features (not in a cheesy way, though).

But if you're looking for posh or design-y, I wouldn't go for the Shelbourne. But I do think it's an all-around solid hotel with lots of things going for it, most of all its location. It's also relatively small, which can be a good or a bad thing, depending on your taste. And it's not a business hotel, or at least not primarily. I'm trying to push it, I'm just trying to get a feel for what you & your friend are looking for.
