visiting a friend and her family for the weekend - stay with the family or at a nearby hotel?

yet another area of disagreement for dh & I!

kind friend is easy either way - we are very welcome but she will not be offended if we stay nearby instead of chez elle.

the advantage of staying in a hotel is that we will have a bit more space and independence (plan to spend rest of time other than sleeping and having breakfast with friend and family anyway), but dh feels we will be less relaxed in the evenings - no sitting about drinking wine together with children in bed.

as the veteran of many a self-catering holiday with other families - without any fallings out - i've always thought staying with another family on their home ground would be quite hard going.

over to you o wise mnetters!

tia

Pros of staying in the hotel..
The nice showers in hotels
The yummy breakfast
The bar in the eve
Time alone

Depends whereabouts in the country you are staying.

We are going to Kent in a few weeks to visit DH's Nanny and then to London to visit my Aunt and Uncle.

I went on to laterooms and managed to find a fairly cheap hotel then phoned them to see if they had interconnecting rooms.

They did and we have managed to get two rooms for two nights with breakfast and dinner on the first night for £210.00.

There seem to be quite a few good offers if you stay in a hotel which is predominantly used by business during the week.

money no object!

well, not quite but we can afford the one i have in mind.

quick update for those of you unable to bear the suspense.

have booked the hotel. will invite friend for child free dinner at said hotel on the friday as our guest. will invite selves to friend's for dinner on saturday, bathe and put children down, then whisk them off in a taxi to hotel when it is time to go.

am hoping that will tick everyone's boxes.

thanks to all very much for your help

That sounds like the perfect solution for everyone bk

nappyaddict · 12/09/2007 14:12

if they had a spare room i think i'd opt for their house but i wouldn't like taking up their living room cos it means you have to get up whe n they do unless they've got two living rooms.

WideWebWitch · 12/09/2007 22:29

Bk I've only just seen this! Sorry, I think option where you stay with them woudl be best BUT BUT BUT it depends on a lot of things and how good friends they are.

I am only happy if there are enough loos for people so one house, 10 people, 1 loo = NO WAY
whereas 1 house, 10 people, 3 bathrooms or 2 loos at min= OK

But with very good friends I am relaxed about

  • what time children stay up, 10pm isn't unknown when one friend with 3 children cmoes
  • them fending for themselves in the morning and making toast/watching tv
  • what time everyone's with it
bossykate · 14/09/2007 10:07

remember i am an uptight control freak! staying in someone else's house fraught with tension

WideWebWitch · 14/09/2007 10:08

Yeah, actually, I forgot aobut that, go for the hotel, definitely

bossykate · 14/09/2007 10:20

but at least i don't have a loo fixation

bossykate · 14/09/2007 10:44

We always stay at friend's houses and them at ours. Everyone just mucks in. We bought a really decent quality futon for the spare room now, but have just dealt with blow up beds, spare mattresses, and all sorts - some in spare rooms, some in lounges - in the past, both we and without DD.

Would find it odd if one of our friend's didn't want to stay over here TBH.

this is the first time we've been asked! so no we haven't. i'd be relieved rather than offended if a family said they wanted to stay at a local hotel rather than with us - but then we don't currently have a spare room.

OP posts:
Blu · 14/09/2007 10:51

Your solution is perfect.

I feel too old and in need of my privacy these days to be sleeping on a sofabed. Especially for 2 nights. And all the kids come down in the morning and peer at you, and you have to get dressed in the bathroom...no-o-o-o-o-o. Also sofabeds are much narrower than proper beds.

Would stay with friend if they had a spare room, though.

bossykate · 14/09/2007 10:52

well i'm not going to stay with (or rather near) either of you two!

OP posts:
Blu · 14/09/2007 10:52

Er, you haven't got a local hotel, either!
